ambassador u.s. war slips been sent to the coast and an elite group of marines will ramp up security. all of this as the obama administration responds to criticism from republican rifle mitt romney while investigating whether the attacks were specifically coordinated to take place on the anniversary of 9/11. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: in cairo, another demonstration at the u.s. embassy. and after what happened in libya, president obama was harsh. in an interview on telemundo. >> they don't have traditions of civil society. >> reporter: not at the u.s. consulate in ben zbaz gi on the eleven anniversary. >> my name is chris stevens and i'm the u.s. ambassador. >> reporter: ambassador chris stevens and three others were killed. shock at the state department. >> how can this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save.

>> reporter: how? islamic fervor. hitting the internet were clips from an anti-islamic movie. >> rereject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, but there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. >> reporter: the bodies of the u.s. dead were taken back home. mitt romney blames president obama. for u.s. officials under siege in cairo condemning the movie for hurting muslim's feelings. >> an apology for america's values is never the right course. >> reporter: a partisan fight as people gathered at the white house to mourn the fallen diplomats. i'm steve handles men, nbc news, washington. new census bureau figures on income, wealth, and poverty for 2011 paint a bleak economic picture. median household income dropped 1.5% last year to just over $50,000 a year. that's over 8% lower than in

late 2007 when the recession began. in contrast, income for the wealthiest 20% of americans went up 1.6% last year. 2011's income gap between the rich and the poor grew to the widest in more than 40 years. and while a proportion of americans living in poverty did not rise for the first time in four years, the 46 million people in poverty remained at the highest level in the 53 years since the census bureau began keeping that statistic. well, apple's new and improved iphone has arrived. the thiper, lighter, taller 5 will be in stores on the 21st. it comes with a laundry list of new additions. nbc's jay gray got a look. >> reporter: the skies did not open up. by all reports the earth is still on its axis, but the tech universe definitely has a new shining star today. >> today we're going to introduce iphone 5. >> reporter: with that, all the rumors shifted to reality.

when the 5, made entirely of aluminum and glass, made its debut in san francisco. >> it is the most beautiful product we have ever made. >> reporter: and apple says the most powerful advanced smartphone ever created. >> it is really easy to make a new product that's bigger. everyone does that. that's not the challenge. the challenge is to make it better and smaller. >> reporter: engineers say the 5 will run on higher speed lte networks and equipped with apple's newest a6 processor, it will operate at double the speed. it has a longer lasting battery, three microphones and an 8 megapixel camera. >> it matches our expectations. we did see this stuff leak out and it's an impressive product. >> reporter: apple hoping the upgrades will help change the picture in the ultra competitive smartphone market. google's android is now the most used operating system in the world and samsung has grabbed the lead in sales. >> i think last year the iphone 4s kind of saw the iphone falling a little bit behind the

competition. i think this year they've really caught up. i'm not going to say they surpassed the competition. >> reporter: something apple hopes to change on friday when they begin to take preorders for the 5. jay gray, nbc news, san francisco. well, now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in los angeles it was take the money and run, and then throw it out of the window. apparent suspected bank robbers tossed out wads of stolen cash while being chased by police. when the thieves were finally captured, one woman dove into the truck driver's seat to get a piece of all of that currency. police quickly surrounded the truck to stop a mob scene. in new york city it's the hairdo 15 years in the making. you're looking at the guinness world record holder for the tallest mohawk, 8'3". it stands atop the fashion designer in japan who says it takes two hours, plus three cans of hairspray and one can of gel

to have a good hair day. finally in california we have an update at the baby panda at the san diego zoo. after six weeks he's starting to open his eyes. it will take him about three more weeks to open them fully. in the meantime the zoo is taking suggestions on what to name him. now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's meteorologist todd santos with your weather. i can never get enough of baby animals. >> polar bears, pan das. >> i'll take them all. >> puppies. >> the list goes on and on. >> love it. heading out to the zoo today, heading outside, should see good conditions heading out along the eastern sections of the country. showers and storms in florida. the streak of rain that we've been tracking eastward. improving conditions back through a good stretch california. from colorado over into kansas, nebraska, some of these areas could use the rainfall. in some cases beneficial rain. in others, we'll start to get some of that over by chicago by

later in the afternoon. some of that streaking in towards the minneapolis area. tracking the frontal boundary will be close to the east coast on saturday. few showers early saturday morning. new york, boston, southeastern new england. for today it's still some of those same areas, onshore flow in florida. potential rip current risk across the east coast beaches. a chance for showers especially as we get some of that daytime heating and especially better coverage as you get down towards miami. philly, jacksonville, the chances will remain. some of the showers closing in towards kansas city. des moines under the gun. chicago, the morning shouldn't be done. by the afternoon, a better chance for showers to fade in. saturday, breaks in showers. central pa, eastern new york may see some chances to start the week end. let's check out your local forecast. philly coming in with 83 degrees, full sunshine across the area today. tampa, as i mentioned, still a chance of some showers. this number is coming in just

its so-called voter purge in an agreement with civil rights organizations. republican governor rick scott had claimed there were 2600 ineligible voters. at new york's kennedy airport, a ring of 18 airport truck drivers and security bring guards were arrested accused of helping to steal more than 100,000 mini lick kerl bottles worth over 3/4 million dollars. the ring also stands accused of stealing other duty free merchandise. new pregnancy rumors are buzzing around england's duchess. the dutch chest turned down wine in favor of water. and g.i. joe is the top toy of the last century. the transformers was second. lego building blocks was in third place and barbie came in fourth. and now here's a look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow closed at 13,333 after

adding 9 points yesterday. the s&p was up 3 and the nasdaq gained 9. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo the nikkei nudged up 35 points but in hong kong the hang seng lost 27. stocks ended wednesday pretty much where they began as caution set in ahead of the fed's big announcement this afternoon. markets tired early after germany approved the new eurozone rescue fund. it will prop up spain and italy's cash strapped economies. investors shifted their attention to the fed. many investors are banking on fed chief ben bernanke to announce a fresh round of stimulus. apple got a 1% boost out of the launch of its faster, sleeker iphone 5. chesapeake energy is getting some breathing room with the sale of nearly $7 billion in assets. the parent company of air bus in england's bae systems,

europe's two largest aerospace defense companies are in merger talks. according to the fdic, the number of u.s. families without bank accounts grew by 821,000 between 2009 and 2011. that means nearly 10 million americans or a little more than 8% of the nation's population don't have a checking or banking account, mostly because they don't have enough money to open and fund one. finally, say so long to free eating at mcdonald's. they'll list calorie information on menus in more than 14,000 restaurants and drive throughs beginning next week. well, the phils fear the marlins, the o's walk off, and redskins fans now have a pos of their own. plus twin blasts by the bombers help keep pace. we're looking at perfect baseball weather for a good stretch of the nation today. will that last until friday? we'll check on the forecast. you're watching "early today."
