nations that the world has until next summer to stop iran from building a nuclear weapon. the white house reacted by saying the u.s. shares israel's goal of stopping that from happening but so far it has refused to set an ultimatum. nbc's danielle leigh reports. >> reporter: from a fight over the west bank to fears about iran's nuclear program, israeli's prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke under pressure before the united nations. >> today a great battle is being waged. >> reporter: just one day after iran's president mahmoud amadinejad spoke, he netanyahu delivered an ultimatum. >> a red line should be drawn right here before, before iran completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment necessary to make a bomb. >> reporter: israel and the west suspect iran is trying build a nuclear weapon and fear the impact on the region, but so far

diplomatic efforts to stop iran who calls the program peaceful have been unsuccessful. netanyahu spoke directly to the palestine yal president mahmoud aback. >> we won't solve our problems with libel louse speeches at the u.n. >> reporter: they upgraded their status at the u.n. body. >> translator: to assert the state this must be palestine. >> reporter: they would pursue the international court as they battle over the west bank. >> translator: our people have become fixed tarts for acts of killing. >> reporter: continuing conflict which will likely require the assistance of the u.s. as both presidential candidates make their way across battleground states, a new nbc news wall street journal marist poll shows president obama leading mitt romney in new hampshire. they are neck in neck in nevada

and carolina. nbc's steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: ten miles from the pentagon in springfield, virginia, mitt romney spoke to veterans blaming president obama for the agreement with republicans to slash defense spending if there's no budget deal by january 1st. >> and the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating. >> reporter: romney's polls in this battleground state look potentially devastating. he's trailing by 3 to 7 p ers percent. romney backers like dave milne are worried. >> he has to get a little more fire in the belly. >> reporter: more romney the businessman suggests soccer mom monica camera. >> he needs to bring up the economy. >> reporter: president obama was in virginia pushing an elitist image of romney in a tv ad to run here putting faces on the 47% of americans romney says he sees as dependent on government.

>> i see hard working virginians, i see students trying to work their way through college. >> reporter: the president was with students who typically pay no income tax, like many soldiers. >> and a see a whole bunch of veterans who have served this country with bravery and distinction. >> reporter: amid the cheering veterans at the romney rally was dave klane undecided because he says his economic plans lack some details. >> i have some doubts whether there's some depth. >> reporter: you're not ready to commit to mitt romney in virginia? >> no, i'm not. >> reporter: there's not much time left to change minds. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in utah it was a dramatic rescue for a young deer that got trapped in a manhole earlier this week. officers used a climbing troep lass so he the spooked animal and hoist it to safety.

the deer was then released back into the wild. beer drinkers you may want to turn away for a moment. cases and cases of beer went flying on to a colorado highway from an overturned semithat apparently took a turn too quickly. the stretch highway was closed for three hours while they cleaned up the mess. the driver suffered minor injuries. and finally the big apple is planning to add another big tourist attraction. look at that, new york city officials released an artist's rendering of a 625 foot ferris wheel. it will overlook the city skyline from statin island and carry over 1400 passengers at a time at a cost of $230 million. the man moth ride is expected to be the largest in the world and is slated to begin turning in 2015. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has your weather channel forecast. happy friday, bill.

the panhandle through oklahoma. that's pretty isolated at this time. there were some lightening strikes earlier. as far as the forecast goes, we are watching on the eastern seaboard that storm system moving through this morning. this afternoon a lot of it should clear out from d.c., to philly to new york. this morning the rain will be with us. through boston, it will linger. texas, you've got some rain heading your way especially today and tomorrow. that's a look at your national forecast. now you can look at the weather outside your window. so the big story as we head into the upcoming weekend will be that heavy rain that will be developing over texas. probably one of the heavier rain events we've seen in a while. it will be including showers and thunderstorms also. not easy to find a sunny spot today. the weekend, besides the texas rain, looks pretty good for most of us. that's coming up. thanks, bill. spain cuts back, blackberry bounces and zegat stacks up your

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. police say a gunman opened fire inside a mini app poe lis sign company thursday killing four people and wounding four others before taking his own life. the minneapolis star tribune say the gunman was a disgruntled former employee. the aclu says there has been a 64% jump on the use of electronic surveillance on americans since 2009 and they say it's being done without warrants. the government says it only does what the courts allow. the producer of the

anti-muslim film that infuriated muslims around the world has been arrested, not for the movie, but an alleged violation from a check fraud violation which could mean prison. actor johnny lewis who appeared in the tv show sons of anarchy was found dead thursday in los angeles. he was suspected in the killing of an 81-year-old woman who may have been his landlord. lewis who once dated katy perry either fell or jumped off the roof. nasa is taking a very close look at new photos from mars that show pebbles rounded off. scientists say it may be a sign that water once flowed on the red planet, possibly enough to fill a stream. now here's an early look at how wall street's going to kick off the day. the dow closed at 13,485 after adding 72 points yesterday. the s&p gained 13. the nasdaq climbed 42. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo

the nikkei dropped 79 points but in hong kong the hang seng was up 78. aggressive budget cutting from one of europe's troubled economies helped wall street snap its losing streak. spain's finance minister announced $51 billion in budget cuts hoping to convince the world it can meet its fiscal targets. that helped gold continue its recent climb. earlier mixed economic data failed to impress investors. initial jobless claims hit a two month low but the final tally on the second quarter gdp was lower than expected. after the bell, battered blackberry maker research in motion reported a lower than expected amount. nike, however, stumbled thanks to weak demand in china. earlier apple drove techs and the nasdaq higher. ge, part owner of this

network, hit a four year high after predicting a 10% rise in industrial revenue. testimony purr paid dick shot up after announcing it will buy rival seely for $229 million. heineken won a two million battle with its $4.6 billion bid for the tiger beer maker. california governor jerry brown signed twin bills yesterday blocking universities and employers from requiring applicants to give up their e-mail or social media passwords. and, finally, zegat is out with its 2012 fast food survey results and the winners are five guys for best burgers. starbucks for best coffee. and mcdonald's for best fries. the most popular of the megachains, subway and wendy's took first and second place. little skeptical on these results. coming up, the rangers clinch a record nine in a row, and no relief for hockey fans.
