few days. the wind and rain and flooding along the coast is what we are mostly concerned with. what's the satellite imagery. you don't see that well-defined , -- that well-defined eye. it looks a little more ragged and will eventually get into some cooler water temperature. right now is a category 2 hurricane and is moving northbound at about 20 miles an hour. for the bahamas, curbing east of the carolinas, and this is what we are concerned with, it turns back to the west. anywhere from the coast of new jersey to perhaps right into maryland sometime on monday. it looks like a powerful storm. it looks like a very strong reality that we will be dealing with some of the impact from sandy later in the weekend and

refreshing, i did not have the willpower to say no. >> malvo is serving a sense with life without parole. john mohamad was executed in 2009. coming up at 6:00, malvo's message to the victims. >> breaking news from baltimore city. police have arrested a 16-year- old teen for bringing an unloaded gun to school. the student has been charged by the school and city police as a result. we will have more on the story as soon as we gather more information. >> police are patrolling the roland park neighborhood in full force as they search for three men behind two armed robberies and abductions. the first round to plot wednesday morning, a woman arriving home from work was forced into her car at gunpoint and ordered to withdraw money

from an atm. 10 minutes later a 19-year-old on at a bicycle was targeted. he was eventually released unharmed. the police are looking for three men. the getaway car is described as a for-store dodge stratus. police in harford county are investigating an accident that killed three people earlier today. it happened on the 7500 block of route 1 this morning. police say a chevrolet impala was headed north on route 1 when it collapsed -- it collided with a tractor-trailer headed south. the crash shut down route 1 in both directions as police conducted their investigation. the victims' names have not yet been released. a painful day in court for the mother and brother of a teen killed in a drunk driving crash. they were on trial in glen burnie on charges of furnishing alcohol to minors.

four people were killed in that accident. kim dacey sat in on the trial today and joins us live from district court in glen burnie with the details. i imagine it was a very emotional day in court. >> it really was. debby franco burst into tears after the judge announced that she and her son joshua or were acquitted on the charges of furnishing alcohol to those miners. >> today's decision by the judge completely exonerated the francos of any wrongdoing. >> debby franco and her son joshua left the courthouse in tears after the judge acquitted them on charges of furnishing alcohol to minors. 18-year-old brianna franco and her friends were killed, as well as 55-year-old terry wayne davis. police said the driver was drunk and going the wrong way on route

50 when she slammed into davis's car. >> the most important thing the public needs to know is that the driver of the vehicle who caused the accident, britney walker, consume alcohol that apparently was obtained by herself or from somebody outside of the franco household. >> the prosecution called several the teams who were at the party that night at the home. one testified he gave bri $5 in exchange for a cup for beer, but most only saw debby franco as they were leaving the party. >> there was testimony, affirmative testimony by least one witness that he was never provided alcohol by the francos. there is never been any evidence to support the charges in this case. >> before the defense began closing arguments, they made a motion for acquittal. the judge granted it, agreeing there was no testimony that

mrs. franco or joshua a furnished any of the alcohol. >> the francos' themselves could not come -- could not comment because there could still be civil litigation in this issue. >> the former university of maryland student who threatened a campus shooting rampage will not spend any time in jail. the sentence was handed down within the past hour in prince george's county court. he made an on-line threat that said he would kill enough people to make the news. he was facing a maximum of three years in prison. he remains banned from the college park campus. on leave from the navy, police say he was approached and

opened fire. david collins has the late breaking news. >> it happen right over there around 8:40 last night. alonso and his younger brother were unloading groceries for their grandmother. police do not have a motive, nor have they identified any suspects. on his first day of leave from the navy, the 24-year-old alonso is shot and killed while a family visit to his grandmother's house in south baltimore. >> they were approached by suspects' who exited a dark colored sedan. a gunman opened fire on the victims. >> martha does not want to be seen on camera. >> i heard a big round of loud shots and i could hear them screaming no, no, why him? he doesn't bother anybody. he doesn't know anybody. >> alonzo, who they called jr,

and his younger brother had just parked around the corner from their grandmother. she ran to his rescue, cradling in comforting him as he lay bleeding next to his car. >> he made it out of the hood, came back to the united states for this. he did not deserve any of this at all. >> family says alonso always got good grades in school. he graduated from school and joined the navy. he had just finished a nine- month deployment on board the uss abraham lincoln. city police are working with ncis. >> canvassing the neighborhood, going door to door, and conducting rounds in the area. this is a tragic incident. this person is a member of the

>> just two days from now, marylanders can head to the polls for early voting. that has advocates all across the state making one final push on the key issues that will be on this year's ballot. members of the teachers' unions say they are voting yes to question 7, which would create a casino in prince george's county and at table games to all casinos. rallyist talked about how the ballot initiative would bring jobs and revenue to maryland as a whole. leaders in the jewish community are pushing for voters to back question 6, the civil marriage protection act. rabbis and others talked about moral values that mandate everyone be treated fairly under the law. >> when two people choose to marry, whether they are gay or

are on the scene an investigation is underway right now. as soon as we get more information, i will update you. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> one of those days in maryland where the western maryland mountains ended up warmer than central and eastern parts of the state because of the cloud cover their role in of the ocean. temperatures were held in check around baltimore and down to the coast, while in the mountains, temperatures in the seven's and even the 80's. "net 72, but only 67 at bwi marshall. the clouds and fog will thicken up. may briefly cleared out early this evening in spots and then it will feel back in when they redevelop. we still have the east wind supplying the moisture from the

ocean. the weather pattern will be energized by a strong cold front. 28 in denver right now, and 72 in kansas city. that front is moving east and it will combine with sandy coming up from the bahamas. where they collide, that is where we will get a really energized storm. it will be important to see where sandy goes as it moves up the coast and the timing of this front coming in from the west. it looks like the front go through here saturday night and sunday morning, and sandy will be coming in sunday night into monday. the eye has become less defined this afternoon, but still holding onto some of those winds. it is tracking through the bahamas with the wind field expanding just a little bit. it is still a category 2

hurricane. moving north at a brisk 20 miles an hour. it is forecast to make its way east of florida and east of the south carolina coastal area, starts to pull toward bermuda and then gets pulled back into the atlantic by some other level steering winds. you can see this wide range of possibilities from southern new england to maybe the carolina outer banks. anywhere in that huge region, the storm could make landfall sometime sunday night going into monday. it looks like monday will be the worst day around here. we have been watching this very closely. there is the center of the storm, southeast of hatteras. the tighter the isobars are together, the stronger the wind s. on that track we get major weather problems here with winds and flooding rains and coastal

>> on the same day authorities announced a massive sweep of what they call tint illegal gambling sites, other illegal gambling activity has been uncovered as well. police say after a month-long investigation, detectives uncovered gaming devices being used illegally, games like slot, black jack, and poker, for cash. we reported yesterday at 5:00 that business is in baltimore ided in ad been rate similar fashion. >> a federal advisory panel is urging all pregnant women to get a whooping cough vaccine. you may know that whooping cough and percuss this is a highly contagious disease. there have been 32,000 cases

nationwide and 16 deaths from the disease this year alone. 2012 may turn out to be the worst year for whooping cough since the 1950's. the vaccine will also print -- protect newborns of women who are vaccinated. prospective moms are also advised to get a flu shot while they are added. the meningitis outbreak -- the new england, pounding center is being investigated for widespread sanitary issues and authorities say maryland facilities are among thousands nationwide that have done business with the center. it includes some big names like the university of maryland medical center and mercy medical center. keep in mind that did not buy the steroid initially linked to the meningitis outbreak, but officials want the public to be aware of any potential risk.

>> state police are calling it an increase in enforcement, a jump in patrol cars lining the roads looking for anything illegal, in particular, impress it -- impaired driving. >> project so low is happening from now until christmas. rob roblin joins us with the latest on project solo. >> it is not just a police taking part, it is police jurisdictions throughout the state that will be of patrolling, beginning tomorrow. they will be out in force. it is quite simple. if you drive drunk, your going to get arrested. starting tomorrow, you will be seeing a lot more police officers on bellaire road. they have seen lots of crashes there that are alcohol-related. this is an ongoing problem with

this stretch of roadway. it is more prevalent on friday or saturday night, but we see it at all hours of the day and even during the week nights. >> in the state of maryland in 2010, there were 22,604 drivers arrested for driving under the influence, and there were 154 alcohol impaired driving fatalities. >> this weekend is operations saving our loved ones, operation solo. targets areas where we have had lots of crashes and made lots of arrests. we are looking for that impaired driver and we want to remove them from the roadway. >> officers here at dundalk community college were finishing up a two-week course on recognizing suspects under the influence of some kind of drug. >> what you are looking for is where the eyes will come

climbing the caribbean, where the storm is already blamed for several deaths. maryland utility companies are preparing for large-scale adages and damage. tom tasselmyer is tracking sandy. >> a strong winter like cold front coming through the upper midwest and a hurricane down in the bahamas moving north. a strange time of year when you can get cold, wintry conditions coming from canada and the topics still active. one in the middle of the country and the other big sprawling area across the bahamas and south florida. look at the computer model estimates. both of them are centered on a track curving back toward the mid-atlantic and northeast. the powerful storm looks like it will be slamming into the east coast, perhaps up to new jersey or some other new england, at the same time that cold air is coming in from the west.

price of a college education in maryland has gone up, just not as much as in other states. you could say it was perfect timing. the governor at a planned meeting in annapolis with more than a dozen college student leaders from across the state. some of them join him by way of the internet. tuition has gone down from eight highest to the 27 highest in the nation. >> when you make better choices, you get better results. recently we started making the investments so that we could make college more affordable for more kids. got credit for helping hold down our even freeze college tuition. >> most of us have to work, even

>> the colorado teenager arrested for the kidnapping and killing of a 10-year-old girl has reportedly confessed to the crime. he made his first court appearance with the family of jessica bridge weight watching. he was enrolled in community college and was said to be fascinated with more jury science, with paper to each -- with a particular interest in crime scene investigations. he will be formally charged next tuesday. >> based on my experience and what i think the charges will be, i think the appropriate thing to do is to charge him as an adult.

the charges are expected to include the kidnapping and murder of jessica. prosecutors say he will not be faced with the death penalty because he is under 18. >> new details on the man charged with the shooting at a georgia megachurch. he shot a man at a mosque because he believed ray lewis of the baltimore ravens was out to get him. he believed that the victims and members of his own family were being paid by ray lewis to "get rid of him." palmer has waived his first court appearance in the georgia shooting. >> she has been considered a trailblazer among american comedians. >> ellen degeneres sat down with our own jennifer franciotti in an interview you don't want to

>> the holiday spirit is hitting home a little early this year. these are volunteers for the maryland food bank, packing up more than 12,000 boxes filled with food that families may need this season. each box is step with the turkey along with traditional fixings like cranberry sauce. it will be distributed to areas soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters. the cost of all that food is covered by local corporations. >> after passing over jamaica and cuba, a hurricane sandy now has its sights set on the united

states. it has the potential to have a major impact on the coast, starting this weekend and into early next week. we have more from palm beach shores, florida. >> hurricane fendi continues to unleash its power on the bahamas. we are getting the outer fringes of that here. we continue to watch the waves roll in, some of them as high as four or 5 feet, and the winds have been gusting up to 50 miles an hour. this weather is expected to be with us all day tomorrow and parts of saturday morning before things finally pull away. officials have closed down schools. obviously they do not want anybody in the water here. worried about the georgia- florida football game on saturday. there are asking folks attending the game to make sure it they use their best judgment. do not bring out a lot of loose things like umbrellas and tarps that will be blowing around.

when you talk about 100,000 people out and that sort of thing, we can certainly get into trouble in a big hurry, so that is obviously a concern. the bigger concern lies as we watch a storm we have never seen on the modern meteorology maps potentially unfold to the northeast. details are uncertain, but it could be a high impact event in the making. >> a lot of potential, but we still have to wait and see. >> it will be evolving over the next few days. right now it looks like the worst of the weather from this system will be on monday. computer models take the center of that storm right over the washington area late monday or tuesday. 67 for the high, 61 for the low.

interesting that the lower temperature is almost what we would have for an afternoon high. we are really in a mild weather pattern. the clouds trying to thin out a little bit in spot right now but they will fill back again overnight. 77 degrees was the record high, fairly low for a record high. i think that is one of the first ones below 80 degrees for a record high this fall. 68 in western maryland, not much of a temperature spread from baltimore to the mountains to the coast. sunset at 6:13 and east reece continues with mild temperatures. the cold will combine with the storm coming up from the hamas and the front will be pushing through. it is still possible the front could make it to the east coast and take sandy away. the more likely scenario is that they will merge.

by the time of the storm gets up to us, it may be losing is tropical characteristics but will still be a powerful area of low pressure. this is the most likely scenario, going for predictor the hamas and turning toward bermuda, before turning back toward the mid-atlantic. some of these are off on their own, but most are clustered in this track that brings the right back into the mid atlantic. that would mostly be happening sunday night into monday. it carries it up for the great lakes. behind the storm there will be some of that cold air coming in that is up in the northern rockies and northern plains right now. that will arrive mostly on tuesday. tomorrow is another mild day.

waves that 1 foot or less. if you are heading out to the western maryland mountains for fraud or the weekend, decent weather out there and mostly partly cloudy skies and 69. showers on saturday, sunday is much colder. on the eastern shore, a little sunshine trying to break through an afternoon and some scattered showers late in the evening on saturday. tomorrow is decent, the weather rapidly deteriorate sunday into monday in ocean city as sandy comes up the coast. 70 tomorrow, 68 saturday, rain and winds increasing sunday and monday. it could be very heavy rain and wind, tapering off on tuesday. chilly temperatures with ties only in the 40's.

>> american airlines might be in the depths of bankruptcy, but it is hiring. a spokesman said it will at least 1500 new flight attendants over the next year. they also plan to hire 2500 pilots over the next five years. american has lost thousands of employees as part of the reorganization. bad news for another major air carrier. federal officials are considering fining a u.s. airways for flying a jet 916 times without performing in required tests and inspections. this is not video of the exact aircraft, but investigators said the plane in question has a leaking fuel pump. apparently the plan was put back into service. u.s. air races is responding to the proposed fine but claims rules were followed. there is an encouraging news tonight from highway safety

as a pastor, my support for question 6 is rooted in my belief that the government should treat everyone equally. i wouldn't want someone denying my rights based upon their religious views, so i shouldn't deny others based upon mine. it's about fairness. i support this law because it doesn't force any church to perform a same sex marriage if it's against their beliefs. and that's what this is about. protecting religious freedom and all marylanders equally under the law. join me in voting for question 6.
