>> 11 deaths reported in cuba from hurricane sandy. parts of this out already experiencing signs of the now named frankenstorm. that is our big story tonight. officials down south are warning people to take the threat seriously. >> the big question in this area is when and where is it going to hit. i can tell you just from talking to people outside the station, people are really nervous about this storm. >> we don't want to be too nervous, but we do want to be prepared. the word has gotten out that a big storm could be headed this way. as a category 2 hurricane coming up through the bahamas. the good news is that the storm has weakened a little bit. it is still a powerful storm, moving north at 13.

life-threatening. there is no word yet on a possible suspect or motive. >> an active duty member of the u.s. navy was fatally shot last night in southwest baltimore. family members say that alonso gladden and his younger brother were unloading groceries for their grandmother when two men approached and someone opened fire before escaping in a dark vehicle. police have no motive or suspects at this time. family members described alonso as the smart one in the family who just had a promotion in the navy. they are understandably heartbroken. >> he made it out of the hood, did something good and came back to the united states for this? he did not deserve any of this at all. >> police are urging anyone with any information about this crime to call the homicide unit. metro crimestoppers is also offering a $2,000 reward. despite the frequency of reported crime recently, violent crime across the city is

actually down so far this year compared to the past couple of years. sheldon dutes joins us live from federal hill without police are working to make the city even safer. >> as you mentioned, on a crime is down across the city compared to previous years, but the new city commissioner and the rest of department want to focus on cracking down on quality of life crimes like robberies and car break-ins. >> one of the safer neighborhoods in the city, and both want to keep it that way the federal hill neighborhood association is taking ownership of their neighborhood streets by participating in their monthly citizens on patrol walk. >> we walk around and point out things that may be suspicious. but also let the bad guys out there know that this is an active neighborhood, and people here are interested and want to know what is going on.

>> homicides, rapes, and robbery third down in the city compared to the past couple of years. but things like property crime, robbery, burglary, those are very important to a lot of people. we have to make sure we also reduce violence. >> the newly installed police commissioner wants to improve the city's crime plan. the commissioner plans to incorporate the committee to help develop strategies. >> we aim to part of a johns hopkins university and develop stakeholders to get an idea of what is important to the city in terms of violence. >> citizens on patrol groups like this one in federal hill are doing their part to help. >> both want to get together and show unified front, that we do care about safety in this neighborhood. but citizens on patrol has been around for many years now. to find that you can get involved, contact the city

>> october is breast cancer awareness month, and a middle river woman's battle has become much worse. >> it not only prevents her from working, it prevents her from collecting unemployment benefits, and she is not eligible for disability. barry simms investigates why she and thousands of other cancer patients face financial ruin. >> christine white is waging a tough battle. >> i am a tough person, but emotionally, i cry every day.

>> her situation started in the spring. she said she had no idea why she started feeling ill. the symptoms, fatigue, nausea, even vomiting. after working nine years as a registered nurse at st. joseph's medical center in towson, she was fired. documents obtained by 11 news revealed her termination was due to a couple of incidents in which she was accused of sleep or sleep like behavior. she denies this and said she was wrongly terminated. she feels that the state, which allows unemployment benefits, -- there was another hurdle, it is the diagnosis she received after she was fired. pecks at the time, being my age, i just cannot believe it could be me. >> she is currently receiving chemotherapy tip combat a rare an aggressive form of breast cancer. under maryland law, a person must be able and available for a

job. they found her unable to work due to illness, declaring a unemployment benefits are denied. >> it cannot pay your bills, you don't have financial support, you have astronomical medical bills, co-payments, medication. but she also cannot receive temporary disability from social security unless she has had cancer for a year or if it has spread to her bones, brain, or other organs. >> everyday is a struggle for me. i have to give up, look in the mirror and be reminded every day that i have breast cancer, and this is what i have to look at. so it is very difficult to be someone in that wig. >> the cancer support foundation says many families are struggling, not only with health issues, but also their finances. >> we are in a crisis with cancer families in the state of maryland. thousands of families are losing

their life, and i am not saying they are dying, but they are losing their jobs, their cars, their houses. >> delegate sally jameson says it is not as easy as it seems. the state offers a short-term benefit, but funding would be an issue. she said this benefit would be strictly for cancer patients under therapy who will be going back to work but have exhausted all avenues of assistance. >> you may win your battle with cancer, but you will lose your life in the meantime. >> along with all the other struggles come within weeks, she could lose the middle river home she inherited from her parents. >> christine white was eligible to continue health care coverage under the federal cobra law but said she could not afford the $1,500 a month payment. she was able to get coverage through her husband's insurance.

we contacted st. joseph's medical center. a spokesperson for the hospital set until we were contacted by wbal, we were unaware of her diagnosis. we are saddened to learn of her breast cancer diagnosis and offer our prayers for her successful recovery. >> now, your insta-weather forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> in south florida, this is what they are dealing with. along the coastal areas, winds are gusting to 40 miles an hour. tropical storm force winds already hitting southwest florida. there are catching the western side of it, torrential rains down in south florida. we may have to deal with some version of that up here beginning sunday night and going into monday. the weather pattern is relatively quiet. a little cloudy and foggy at times today and temperatures warmer than normal. it averages 64.

61 degrees below, 90 degrees warmer than average for this part of october. 59 in easton, 64 on the coast at ocean city and 50 in the western maryland mountains. look at the cloud cover going into early tomorrow morning. the east wind keeps the clowning and some fog and drizzle are possible as we head toward morning. -- keeps it cloudy. there will be a tendency for the clouds to try to thin out and maybe even some sunshine breaking through tomorrow afternoon. thing will change when this front out near chicago rolls through. it drops to 46 in chicago and still 71 in cleveland. this will come through beginning

saturday night going into sunday. sandy will be moving north and we are in for the potential of some very heavy rain. strong, tropical storm force winds and coastal erosion. the full moon comes in on monday, too, that will complicate things as well. there is the storm making its way through the bombing. the good news it had weakened a little bit this evening. is moving north at a brisk 13 miles an hour. -- the storm is making its way through the bahamas. it will make a turn back to the west. anybody from new york city down to ocean city and maybe even virginia beach could feel the impact of this storm making landfall, again, mainly on monday. it looks like the european model has the center of the

storm southeast of hatteras. then it turns right into del mar up as we get into monday afternoon or evening. the concern is out there for flooding rains, coastal erosion. by wednesday it is up in the great lakes. colder temperatures next week. mostly cloudy skies and a high of 67-72. on the bay tomorrow, went out of the east. sunshine and temperatures of now 7 -- governor 70. by sunday night and monday in the mountains, they might get some snow at this. showers arriving saturday, heavy rain possible on sunday. over 6 inches of rain on parts of the eastern shore throughout monday evening and tuesday morning. there is the showers arriving saturday evening in a heavy
