across the state of maryland, dumping several inches of rain and snow across the state. at the height of the storm, sandy knocked out electricity to 219,000 customers and bge is still working to restore power to about 130,000 households. peck's light rain has started to fall here in ocean city, but that is bought -- that is not stopping the cleanup efforts from going on. many people telling us it really could have been much worse. after a thrashing from sandy along the maryland oceanfront with sustained winds of more than 40 miles an hour, a lot of cleaning up to do tuesday morning. >> it was scary. >> for folks who live around

here, many were expecting the worst. >> obviously a lot of debris and trash. a lot of cleanup will be happening, but all in all, i think we faired well. >> i think we totally lucked out. we are definitely saved by the dune protection, and even the digging up of the boardwalk- regan to the water from going into the stores. -- digging up of the boardwalk might have helped to prevent the water from going into the stores. >> there was severe damage done to the ocean city fishing pier. >> i guess we were lucky to not get it as bad as other places. it is just weird, looking at it. there is sand works and should not be. -- there is sand where sand should not be. >> mostly sand and debris, and

after the rumors were confirmed, a portion of the fishing pier was washed away. you can see the pylon's left standing in the water. we turn around and headed up coastal highway, where there was evidence of extensive flooding on the bayside. debris was everywhere. we noticed utility crews got a jump early, but according to del mar power, there were no reported outages in ocean city. when damage was everywhere you looked. a side of the hotel was completely blown off. beach erosion was extensive, too. 9-13 foot waves manage to erode away a good portion of the dune system that the city had put in place to protect properties. in the end, everyone we spoke to had a sense of relief knowing that things could have been much, much worse.

out into the bay yesterday bookbag again. the water was working its way up into the yards of many homes here. it looked pretty bad to me, but to the folks who went through isabel, that is not the case. >> just a little water in the lower part of the basement. we kept power, so we were fortunate on that. compared to isabel, this was a piece of cake. with isabel, my whole place but was flooded to the ceiling. >> this is mild, compared to isabel. this is nothing. >> with isabel we had 3 feet of water in here. this is nothing compared to isabel. it came up to the top of the wall but did not come in, so we made it all right. >> as bad as it looks to you and

me, it was not as bad as isabelle. >> so isabel was a lot worse? >> yes, i had 3 feet in my living room. this time i had nine in my house. -- i had none in my house. >> the county said it says all in all, baltimore county fair pretty well. >> we are now moving into the next phase of the operation, which is public works getting the trees out of the roads. we will also set up dumpsters like we did last july. that worked pretty well for people to take their storm damage and debris. if they have what carpeting or things like that, and of course those who are on well and

septic. >> it is not quite over. in a few hours, there will be another high tide. rob roblin, wbal-tv 11 news. >> parts of howard county were underwater today and we are talking about water most unpleasant. emergency management officials say one of the plant has been leaking raw sewage, about 2 million gallons per hour pouring out from the little patuxent water reclamation plant because of the power outage. with the high tide coming around 6:45 this evening, the flood waters could get even higher. barry simms, how are things there right now? >> even with the concern about high tide, people are feeling that annapolis has been spare. some people are actually enjoying the floodwater.

compromise street in downtown annapolis is compromised by flooding. water is flowing in around the city dock area. some area residents could not resist coming out and taking a look, and even taking some pictures. >> i decided to come out and see what damage has been done. >> the mayor says the city escaped relatively unscathed. >> in annapolis, we are used to flooding in things like that. it is just part of doing business around here. we will get through it. >> business owners are doing what they can to keep the damage to a minimum. >> we responded to 406 calls overnight. 186 of those were storm related.

the most serious was a tree that fell on a house in pasadena, killing an individual. >> lead -- floodwaters, down trees and power lines blocked roads and a main its crew is working to keep 14 feet of water in this wetlands area from harming the street and nearby homes. >> we will be pumping water, relieving the pressure of of this hillside. there are tubes under their that run under the road. basically relieving the pressure. >> along with the kayakers you see here, we have also seen people walking through the water. the mayor says he is looking forward to high tide, because once that is over, he expects the water to recede. barry simms, wbal-tv 11 news. >> sandy socked maryland with more than just rain and wind gusts.

western maryland is continuing to dig out from 2 feet of snow. whisper resort and snowshoe mountain both reported a 60 mile per hour wind gusts and the snow caused a pileup of for tractor-trailer's yesterday. sandy destroyed countless trees back in baltimore like this one. >> while the worst of sandy is behind us, hopefully, state officials are still surveying the damage and working with cruz to repair damage and to get mass transit back up to speed, as many people want to get back to work tomorrow. >> flooding is expected to be a problem for several days. lisa robinson joins us from reisterstown with the latest from state officials. >> there are still people out there suffering, but there are a lot of positives to report tonight, too. the bridges are back open. mass transit should be a fully

operating tomorrow. tonight there will be full bus service and full metro subway service. about 1200 people are in shelters. early voting will resume tomorrow morning at 8:00 and will go until 9:00 p.m. the government did extend those hours. while the storm is over, the concern remains for those who still work out of power. officials are watching is the streams and rivers as we will have a high tide tonight and one tomorrow. overall, the governor says he is proud and happy and relieved with the way maryland has responded to this storm. >> for more on the federal response to sandy, plus how the massive storm affected the entire east coast, stay tuned

>> sandy is still being felt in queen anne's county. >> david collins continues our live team coverage. >> it has been cold, windy, and rainey all day long. emergency officials say the storm -- they dodged a major bullet. this parking lot looks like a lake right now, and it is hard to tell in some places where the parking lot meets the road. the storm is still impacting the area. this used to be a parking lot. dozens of roads have been covered with water like this,

creating detours. standing water has closed and created the tours for others. no one had to be rescued or evacuated, thankfully. at its peak, there are 5500 power outages. there is concern that some edgewater still coming down, and there is concern that high tide could push flood waters of another 5 feet. we will keep an eye on it. >> as bad as it was, we dodged a bullet, at least in this area. >> flooding tonight is going to be significant. getting reports of homes being flooded in calvert county. they are getting some serious flooding right now. that will make its way up toward annapolis and the eastern shore as well. rainfall totals that started this whole thing, the rain god you are well in advance of the

storm. the totals are pretty impressive, about 6 inches at tv hill, well over 6 inches at the airport. over a foot of rain in easton. ocean city well over 7 inches, and elkton at about 6 inches of rain. the storm that hit all this is now to the west and spinning around just to the north of garrett county. the big flow around it is encompassing most of the eastern half of the country. you can see some more air being pushed into augusta, maine. colder air is coming in from the west side and changing that over to snow. the wind gusts were impressive on the north side of the storm. ocean city had hurricane force wind gusts. annapolis up to 69 of an hour and a gust of 60 miles an hour officially at bwi marshall airport.

temperatures are below freezing in many areas out in allegany and garrett counties. that have been measuring snow by the foot. as of 6:00, the blizzard warning was dropped in our state but still going on in west virginia. as of late this afternoon, you could see anywhere from 20-29 inches of snow in parts of garrett county. reducing visibility and causing power outages. maybe a wet snowflakes are too mixed in here. tonight. getting into st. michael's about now and annapolis and a few minutes. up to havre de grace by about 11:00 tonight. the tides will be coming in on top of some water that really did not get out after the morning tide. maybe higher than 2-4 feet above normal. with the storm sitting out here,

the winds today have been out of the south, pushing water up into the day and preventing the morning tide from coming out. we may see a break or two in the clouds tomorrow afternoon, although mostly cloudy day. by friday and into the weekend, we should start to clear things out a bit. the forecast for tomorrow, temperatures should start to climb a little after a morning shower or even a morning snowflake. a mix of clouds and sunshine in afternoon highs of 53-58. number four trick-or-treater smart evening, most of the precipitation will be out. over the weekend, temperatures reached 55-60. more rain showers possible monday and tuesday next week. >> like many of you, the ravens had to run on backup generator

power for much of the past few days. they have full power back on this afternoon in continuous preparation for sunday's game in cleveland. for bryant mckinnie, the weather does not look like the biggest distraction of his week. he faces a lawsuit today for $375,000 in unpaid bills he allegedly ran up at a number of strip clubs in southwest florida. he has denied knowledge of the lawsuit or allowing anyone in this case. he has had his wages garnered as part of a separate settlement from last season. if the orioles and washington nationals had pulled off the battle of the beltway's world series, there is a pretty good chance that sandy would have interrupted that series, too. baseball will announce gold glove winners this evening.

there are three players in contention. jones already has won a gold glove. matt wieters has become the most dangerous man in the game to try to steal on. there is a good chance he will put you out with his arm. if all 3 win, it will mark the first time since 1998 that the orioles have three gold glove winners on the same team. michael phelps said he would not compete in rio de janeiro in the 2016 games. it turned out he showed up in rio for years before the next games. he has the same impact all around the world that michael jordan has in basketball courts. even as rises and motivates.
