the morning. those questions were answered a few minutes ago. >> we've got a jumbotron up on the plaza there which is pretty cool. >> that's there for democracy plaza. >> exactly. worked out pretty well today. >> a lot of people got to see the concert. we want to get to the news of the day and we've got miss natalie morales over at the news desk. good morning to you again. >> good morning to you once again. good morning, everyone. only four days until the presidential election new unemployment numbers from the labor department show that the nation's jobless rate rose 0.1 to 7.9% as more people enter the job market. however, employers did step up hiring, adding 171,000 people to their payrolls. that report is sure to provide ammunition for both sides in the presidential race. there are signs of hope as the northeast tries to recover from hurricane sandy. utility officials in new york vow to restore power by tomorrow. to many manhattan and brooklyn customers and more subway and rail lines are reopening today, but there are still long lines at area gas stations where some

drivers have been waiting for hours, often to learn there is no fuel left or that it is being rationed, and along the devastated jersey shore, residents are being allowed back into their neighborhoods only to find that in so many cases they are now homeless. there's a lot of debate about the decision to proceed with the new york city marathon on sunday. mayor michael bloomberg defends the decision saying the city needs the money that out-of-town visitors will spend this weekend, and he vows the marathon won't divert any resources as the city recovers from the superstorm. this weekend marks the end of daylight saving time for 2012, so before you go to sleep on saturday night here's the reminder to set your clocks and watches back one hour to standard time. blake shelton, who serves as one of the coaches on nbc's "the voice" was the big winner at last negotiate's country music association awards. took home entertainer of the year honors and two other trophies. blake's wife miranda lambert was also named female vocalist of the year. powerful team. and don't forget you can

help those affected by hurricane sandy. tonight on the networks of nbc universal matt will be hosting a special one-hour concert "hurricane sandy, coming together." it will feature performers including billy joel, bruce springsteen and the e street band, jon bon jovi and aerosmith joining us as we just heard as well. it's now four minutes after the hour. let's go back over to al with another check of the weather. al will be taking part in that telethon as well. >> all of us really want to help our friends all along the shoreline and inland as well. let's see what we've got for you for today. again, we're keeping an eye on a potential nor'easter. the european model has it coming up the coast and past virginia by early wednesday morning and then setting up right off the long island and new jersey coast lines by wednesday evening. we don't like this. 1 to 2 inches of rain, wind gusts to 45 miles per hour, and some wet snow inland, and the problem, of course, with the strong winds and waves, with compromised beaches, that could be a big problem. the rest of the country today,

images from this post-hurricane sandy. you can't help but be moved, heartsick a lot of times but a little bit hopeful, too. you see it happened after 9/11 and happens after a lot of these natural disasters when people rush in to help. natalie, why don't i start with you, just an enduring image for you. >> well, obviously we're seeing great pictures from across the area. here just national guard getting some muffins, fresh muffins, but, you know, twitter, the power of twitter, it has really demonstrated how much you can get the word out for people who need help, and in my town in hoboken it's been neighbor helping neighbor all along, people really communicating. well, some people here in battery park city, heather mcalister sent me a tweet and said we have brown bag meals to deliver to hoboken. she saw my reports, and she wanted to get them to hoboken and said how can i deliver. i said take them to city hall. she delivered amazing meals. also, a great man on twitter who has been following me, has a brazilian restaurant here in the

city, brought 300 meals to hoboken to help those people out. the more we can get those messages and people saying i have the resources, what can we do and how can i help? those are the meals delivered to hoboken yesterday. >> rescue workers carrying young people and people through the water. >> yeah. >> you know, i mean, look at that. you just see that and it's people self-lessly giving of themselves to make sure others are okay. >> and just to see, i mean, even from the air when i was in a helicopter seeing a front loader picking up a couple and their dog, and carrying them through the water in hoboken, and delivering them to safe dry ground. >> willie, you're from jersey. it's hard on everybody to see this at your home state. >> anybody who spent time at the jersey shore and saw the images that you brought us two mornings ago from the helicopter, these were the board walks, the roller coasters you rode as a kid. >> rode on those rides this past summer with my kids. it's heartbreaking. >> it's gone now. an image from new york's langone

hospital on that first night when the generators failed and the nicu nurses were carrying these premature babies by hand. they took them down ten stories and were bringing them out into the driving rain and the wind, manually ventilating them, and it's moments like that, it was completely life-affirming and made you realize we'll get through it. >> coney island, the aquarium there, the fish, the wildlife, taking care of the walruses. i mean, there's so many people who are going 24/7 throughout all of this, trying to help everyone. even our -- one of our stage managers here tara has been going up to the animal control and helping walk the dogs. a lot of people forget about those, you know, who really need some help. >> an folks want to figure out how can i make a difference? what can i do? and we've got this,concert tonight that benefits the american red cross. amazing talent helping out. it's going to be hosted by matt at 8:00. we've got bruce springsteen, of course, new jersey's favorite son, along with his other

know they have a buddy. nbc's kristen dahlgren has more. >> reporter: these kids are called shadow buddies, kids with cancer, kids with inhalers, teaching them about their illness and making them feel less alone and even a big strapping football player like tony gonzalez can get a lot from these dolls and the children he gives them too-to- >> ryan's first throw of the game. a third down conversion to tony gonzalez. >> reporter: a 12-time pro bowler, tony gonzalez has been called one of the best tight ends to ever play the game, but it wasn't always that way. >> i was the worst kid on the team. >> reporter: as a child, he was scared, bullied. >> this guy would come down to my school every single day and wait for me. >> reporter: but he decided to stop living in fear, and things started to click for the young player. he became an all-american, was drafted by the kansas city chiefs, and then again learned life isn't always easy. >> i just cracked under the pressure and i dropped 17 balls that year, led the league in drops? a teammate gave gonzalez a book
