--www.ncicap.org-- >> as a grieving community continues an agonizing week of final goodbyes, people across the nation are beginning to reflect on what the legacy of the school shooting that claimed 26 people, including 20 children, should be. the pain of the tragedy remains very rock tonight. for those in newtown, school is back in session for everyone but the children at sandy hook elementary. at funerals resume in the morning. back-to-back funerals were held for two fifth graders. memorial services and wakes were held for some of the adult victims who died trying to save their students. >> whenever actions led -- i am sure they are the ones responsible. >> sandy hook elementary is still closed. furniture and equipment has been moved to a nearby facility in monroe. --did before the attacka

law enforcement says they have found no items that could shed light on the horrific attack. authorities say lanza his mother at their home and took her car and some of her guns to the school, where he broke in and opened fire. after all the carnage, he shot himself. from the unconscionable act, the nation's conscience has awakened with regard to how violence and mental health problems can impact person. the national rifle association broke its silence -- the nra says its members are shocked and saddened and heartbroken by the murders in newtown and they are "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to make sure this never happens again." no one knows exactly what this means, but the organization has scheduled a news conference for friday. the white house says president obama would actively support dianne feinstein's legislation to reinstate an assault weapons

ban. the president wants to close begun to show the pole and ban high capacity ammunition clips. state police tell 11 news there are more than 46,000 assault weapons legally registered in the state. that is about 6% of the total registered firearms in maryland. that number -- more than 771,000. friday's massacre sparked strong positions on both sides of the gun-control debate. joining us live from the newsroom, george -- >> began control side as seems to be gaining momentum when it comes to crafting legislation. that has caused many on the gun advocates tried to stock up. a typical monday at a discount store in baltimore county sees at roughly $2,000 in sales. this monday, they sold $17,000. >> astronomical. pretty much nonstop -- i ate lunch at 4:30.

systematic failures at the state department lead to inadequate security that left the mission vulnerable. the september 11 attack killed a u.s. ambassador and three other americans. despite that review, the panel determined no individual american officials ignored or violated their duties, and no disciplinary action was needed. in addition, the board found there was no protest and blamed the incident entirely on terrorists. both sides appear to be even closer to a deal with regard to the fiscal cliff, but just in case negotiations stall house republican leaders are pitching a plan b. under the backup plan, tax rates for those earning more than $1 million a year would increase to 39.6%. democrats quickly rejected the suggestion. hundreds of baltimore city temporary school employees will lose their jobs before christmas. administrators say they are making the cuts to avoid

a traumatic brain injury and broken bones. he was in a coma for three months. the alleged drug driver -- drunken driver is charged. prosecutors added new charges, including causing a life- threatening injury. he has a court appearance january 29. >according to the police report, he take a breathalyzer test that would determine the alcohol content in his blood and could have provided prosecutors with what they call compelling evidence. under maryland law, you can refuse a breath test. >> keep going, keep going. >> state police demonstrating how it works -- if police asked you to take it and to refuse, your violence -- driver's license can be suspended for four months. but he continued to drive. a judge found him guilty of that last week. after a report, anne arundel

county state's attorney contacted the team about efforts to take a tougher stance on a drunk driving in maryland. >> @ think our current law is inadequate. >> ideally, the breath test would be mandatory -- he supports enhancing the law. >> if somebody is suspected of drunk driving and refuses to take the test when offered -- compounding the that refusal would be a possible one year in jail and $1,000 fine. >> a defense attorney thinks the current law works. >> you have a right when you are arrested. when you are arrested for an alcohol related offense -- you blow into a machine, that is basically a violation of your fifth amendment right to keep your mouth shut and not get in trouble. >> maryland police arrested more than 22,000 people each year for drunk driving. in each of those years, more

than 5100 refused to submit to a breath test. we have also learned that every arrest as a result of a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit of 0.08. >> people focus too much on the number of the legal limit -- people can certainly be impaired at levels below the legal limit. we have had them as low as 0.03. >> more than 12 states now require ignition interlock devices in the car is a convicted drunk drivers. maryland does not. the device keeps the car from starting if the driver has been drinking too much. according to statistics provided by the state of new york, the devices help reduce drunk driving a rests by 14%. robinson believes it is effective, but also says if there is any change in maryland law, it should be best -- >> the ability to drink of alcohol and drive in this state and any other state should not be 0.0 a. it should be zero. very clearly. change the law and make it

become significant in the western maryland mountains. on the eastern shore, some showers arriving thursday evening. 50 posture highs tomorrow. maybe a shower by thursday evening. here is a shower that will pass us in the early morning tomorrow. to the west, a new front organizing over the rockies. this is going to strengthen. some of that cold from western canada will come behind it. we expect a surge of cold air for the weekend. when that happens, snow in western maryland will be much more significant. showers could move toward baltimore thursday afternoon -- past that snow starts to come into western maryland, a winter storm watch for tomorrow night into friday. could have well over 6 inches of snow by the time friday evening comes around when a the lake effect machine takes in in garrett county. the front comes through friday morning -- a chance for a flurry on saturday.
