>> not bad. it was worse earlier today. the wind has died down and will continue to do so if through the evening. we saw wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour in some spots. downtown baltimore, 24 miles an hour. out west, it is still 21 miles an hour. they had 10 inches of snow in western maryland. ocean city had 21 miles per hour as well. current conditions at the airport, 37 degrees. the sustained wind is around 8 miles an hour of the west. a lot of folks are talking about a white christmas. we could have a flurry christmas. i will explain, coming up. >> we will check back with lowell in a bit. first, we have live team

coverage of the weather. we understand pg&e is preparing for potential problems. >> they have been preparing all day, starting this morning. i want you to see how it looks out here. it looks like a ghost town. there are not many people walking around downtown because of the cold and windy conditions. those who are out here are bundled up and trying to get to a warm place. bge is reporting around 1000 customers are currently without power. that number is low considering there are over 1.2 million customers. in anticipation of weather- related outages, increased staffing. they also had their linemen out

this morning to remove down trees and restore power. they say giving the crews out ahead of the storm is the key to keeping the average numbers so low. >> it is important for us to have our employees ready for weather-related outages. that is why we mobilized so early this warning. our guys could be ready to go as soon as we saw on. >> bge has put popped in notice to customers. if you are without power, do not assume that they know. give them a call. we are live in a very cold downtown baltimore, wbal-tv 11 news. >> things are improving for holiday travelers in the d.c. area. earlier today, dulles was experiencing delays because of the high wind. thursday and friday, thousands of flights were delayed or

canceled because of the storm that hit the midwest. before noon today, those numbers drop below 70. bwi . marshall airport is not reporting any current weather delays. three baltimore county offices are being hailed as heroes after pulling a man from the burning car. the man was driving around bethlehem boulevard around 2:30 this morning when he hit a light pole. when officers arrived, the car was smoking. they were able to rescue the man before it burst into flames the driver was flown to shock trauma. there is no word on his condition or what could have caused the accident. washington is closed for holidays just nine days before we go over the fiscal cliff. when they return, they will return to the familiar stalemate. president obama is calling on both sides to find a compromise.

>> before heading off to hawaii to celebrate christmas, president obama tried to give lawmakers something to think about on their own holiday break. >> think about the obligations we have to the people. >> nine days before the fiscal cliff and not a creature was stirring in washington. negotiations at an impasse. the president says he hopes the holiday spirit will inspire a change of heart. >> they can drink some eggnog and have some christmas cookies. >> republicans say the president's deal is too hard to swallow. >> it would hurt jobs. >> speaker boehner's plan to raise taxes on americans making more than $1 million a year was scuttled by fellow republicans. it is dead in the water with senate democrats. president wants to lock in tax cuts for 98% of americans.

[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> the painful tobias continue in connecticut. a local family held a funeral service for their little girl. josephine was born in maryland. killed inside sandy hook elementary school. the family says she will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and love of the baltimore ravens. mourners were asked to wear purple in her honor. josephine had been diagnosed with autism. you can donate to the address on your screen. be sure to specify your contribution is in memory of josephine gay. donations have poured in from all over the globe after the school shooting. united way has collected more than $2.5 million for the official memorial fund. private fund-raisers have collected hundreds of thousands of dollars more to help pay for

memorial services. the town has seen a steady scene extreme of toys and food donations. united way is asking people to stop sending toys and instead do charitable work or make a monetary donations. lowell melser is here on this windy day. >> the strongest wind gust was in frederick county, 51 miles an hour. 44 miles an hour at bwi. it has been a windy day. the good news is it is dying down. outside right now, it is very cold. we will have the insta-weather plus forecast after the break.

>> here is your insta-weather forecast. >> it is a windy day. the current wind gusts are still in the greater baltimore area. things are in the 20-mile per hour range. same thing for the eastern shore. out west, they have had a lot of snow. i will show you what i am talking about in a second. current temperatures, 42 downtown. on the eastern shore, 39. when you combine the heavy wind which the temperatures, they

feel about 10 degrees cooler. keep that in mind if you are heading out tonight. you will need a jacket definitely. high temperatures only around 26 to 32 degrees. clear, breezy, and cool. the wind will still be strong out of the west. 15 to 25 miles per hour. the current weather shows clearing conditions for most of the state except way out west where they are still seeing some of this low making a mess. we are looking good for the next 24 to 30 hours. that is good news for the ravens game tomorrow. we are watching this system out west. it will move in around christmas eve. it could bring some rain heading into christmas eve and flurries into christmas day. you will not get a white

christmas, but you could see some flurries. take a look at what we're expecting as far as precipitation. i stopped around 12:30 on monday afternoon. you can see the mix coming in. i think it is probably going to be arraigned situation. north and west, they can see some snow. the rainfall is behind it. on christmas day, and do not be surprised to see a flurry. i want to show you some of the snow totals in far western maryland. up to 1 foot of snow around oakland. great news for the resorts. as far as tomorrow, 39 to 44 degrees. southwest wind 10 to 15 miles an hour.
