[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> you are watching wbal tv 11. local and late breaking, this is a levin news tonight at 11:00 p.m. >> not even 48 hours into winter. this is video from earlier today. some areas of western maryland are reporting up to a foot of snow on the ground. here with more it is our meteorologist. >> they got pounded in western maryland. we had a windy day to day. gusts over 40 miles an hour. the good news is they are starting to die down that they will still remain strong into the evening. i want to show you right now, sustained winds of 13 miles an hour. the strongest part is in western maryland, 21 miles an hour and

16 in oakland. we will see wind from 10-20 miles an hour. we are not out of the woods yet. but things should die down by tomorrow. talking about a couple of flurries for christmas. see what happens. >> and we have team coverage of the winter weather. our reporter is downtown where crews have been preparing for potential problems all day long. >> very busy. 1500 customers are with the past -- power. the number is low considering there are 1.2 million customers. we will explain how they kept it so low. many of those who braved the cold are trying to make the best of it. it is this season of giving. but this person wishes mother

nature did not give too much. >> it is too cold out here. >> tent -- capped restaurant goers shivering and wearing layers upon layers of clothing. >> i am wearing four layers of clothing. >> i have my hat. a lot of players. >> many tried their best to get through the day, crews are in full force since the merc -- early morning hours anticipating power outages. by getting ahead of the wind, power outages were capped at a minimum. >> the fact we have them ready is what is helping us to get all of the customer's back on as quickly as we can. >> many agree cold temperatures during the holiday season tend to go hand in hand.

>> it is not winter without the cold. >> you should never assume they know there is a powder -- a power outage. if you lose your electricity, and give them a call. >> thank you. some good news for people who love the winter. maryland to ski resort will remain open. it has announced it is under new management. visitors will still see some familiar faces. it will now offer ski and snowboard rentals and in the coming months they hope to improve other activities including golf, fishing, and mountain biking. the three officers are being held as heroes after polling a man from a burning car. the man was driving in the area of bethlehem boulevard this morning when he lost control of his truck.

when officers arrived, the car was smoking but they were able to rescue the man before it burst into flames. the driver was flown to shock trauma. no word on what caused the accident. the painful good-byes continue in connecticut. today, a family held a service for their little girl, and josephine gay was killed days after her seventh birthday inside of sandy hook elementary school. the family said she will be remembered for her sense of humor and love of the baltimore ravens. mourners were asked to wear purple today. josephine had been diagnosed with autism. a fund has been set up through her name. you can donate to the address on your screen. be sure to specify your contribution is in her memory.

donations have poured into shoulder the pain of the shooting. the united way has collected more than two and a half million dollars for the memorial fund and private fund-raisers have collected hundreds of thousands more to pay for memorial services. the town has also seen a stream of toys and food donations but the united way is asking people to stop sending toys and do charitable work or make a monetary donations. the debate over gun control continues in light of that tragedy. one of the latest issue was placing armed guards in schools. some are taking it a step further. lawmakers in 10 states are considering laws that would allow teachers to carry firearms. it is generating a lot of controversy. >> i want to be able to call my parents and say a bad guy came into our school. your child is coming home.

the bad guy is leaving in a body bag. >> it is impractical. there was a guard at columbine. that did not help. there concluded in a matter of seconds or minutes. >> friday, the nra called for armed guards in every school in america. the nation waits on the political left -- political cliffhanger. the message to lawmakers as the nation move closer to the fiscal cliff. santa claus comes to town. why it means even more to these kids.

too long. two more days until christmas. for those who have fallen on hard times, an annual tradition makes all of the difference. nearly 150 children were treated to christmas early. >> it was a cold day to wait outside for a party but the promise of a free christmas warmed up the spirits of needy families. >> mary christmas! [applause] >> his arrival was the big moment any child who came to the party got to meet him. each child received a gift from a mound of presence donated by the curtis bay athletic club. for 33 years, the club has thrown this party and one of its members has been there every time. >> it kind of breaks me up.
