of what congress agreed to. >> good morning. a very late vote last night but runtime for millions of americans who wondered if their taxes would go what this year. >> lawmakers left capitol hill after finally avoiding the fiscal cliff. >> some point you strike a balance. >> 257 democrats and republicans voting for a bill to keep the alternative minimum tax from hitting working families and prevent tax hikes for 98% of americans. tax rates will go up for couples making more than $450,000. the estate tax threshold is over $5 million. >> tax relief has been achieved.

now is a time for the president to work with congress to address the government overspending. >> and the debt ceiling. president obama urged congress to raise it. >> we cannot not pay bills that we have already incurred. the consequences for the global economy would be catastrophic. >> no word when the president will sign the new bill. it was just in time for nervous investors as markets reopen this morning. tracie potts, wbal-tv 11 news. >> police are investigating two new year's days shootings. what happened on caroline street. a man was shot in the abdomen.

police investigating a separate shooting in northwest baltimore that happened after 4:00 p.m. near druid hill avenue. a man was suffering a gunshot wound to the shoulder. >> for many, ringing in the new year was cause for celebration. there was a big party at a hotel that prompted three calls. jennifer franciotti has more details. i understand this ran the gamut of incidents. >> their credit been too many people. overnight, they answered three separate calls for a stabbing, a fight, and some kind of drug overdose. partygoers report having a great time at the atrium.

there were about 1000 people at this event. not everybody ran in 2013 peacefully. there was a call about a fight. someone called paramedics about a drug overdose. about an hour after that, a man was stabbed. police do not know if these incidents were connected. some did not notice the repeated police presence. >> there were security guards at the location. too many people for them. we were called then. we were able to diffuse the situation. >> everything seems to be going on normally this morning. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> police continue their

investigation into a new year's day crash. the trooper pulled over a vehicle on tuesday morning on the inner loop of the beltway at greenspring avenue. his car was rear ended by another vehicle. the trooper suffered non-life- threatening injuries. harford county police say a teenager was killed in an accident in aberdeen. 70-year-old austin remines lost control of his car -- 17-year- old austin remines. the driver of the other car was not hurt. >> police arrest two suspects in connection with a brutal beating. police say john mason was walking back in november when a group of four men attacked him.

investigators now say two are in custody this morning. police are still searching for the other two suspects. >> 5:07. school safety is a major issue across the country. a major change in new jersey. >> and lawsuit against the ncaa in pennsylvania. >> this is 695 at liberty road. things are picking up to their normal pace. ♪

file a lawsuit against the ncaa. he tends to sue them over sanctions following the sandusky scandal. they agreed to a fine. lawmakers raised objections to the money being spent outside the state of pennsylvania. teachers and staff will get together for orientation at their new school today in connecticut. the classrooms will look just like sandy hook. classes begin later this week. >> armed police officers will be stationed in one new jersey district while students are there. the change comes weeks after the shooting in newtown,

cliff finality this morning after a vote in the house got a deal done. impact on the bill's from hallie jackson. how is the president responding? >> the president is on his way to hawaii after thinking leaders overnight for coming to a deal. >> the motion is adopted. >> 2013 begins with a bang. >> this was a monumental task especially with the time of growing short. >> most of us will not see higher income taxes except for families making more than $ 450,000. the social security payroll tax cut is expiring. the bill extends unemployment benefits to the end of 2013.

the president is now headed towards hawaii. he had hoped for more of a grand bargain. >> there wasn't enough support for a larger agreement. >> this measure sets up more battles moving forward as john boehner promises to push in forms to the entitlement reprograms that are driving the country more and more into debt. >> the senate and president failed to meet their own stated obligations which was to bring us a balanced bill. >> one of the next big battle revolves around the debt ceiling, making sure the u.s. has enough to pay its bills. hallie jackson, wbal-tv 11 news.

>> a busy new year's morning thanks to a hotel party in timonium. officers responded to three separate calls. jennifer franciotti has the details. >> it started right after the ball dropped on new year's eve. they are curious to find out if it was too few security guards for the number of people attending the party. this hotel posted a new year's eve party. >> they did it at a hotel so you can get a room and drunk and not worry about driving home. they did a good job of putting this together. >> about 1000 people in the atrium. >> a lot of different promoters getting together to throw a
