back now with more on "today," this thursday morning, the 24th day of january 2013. nice to see some hearty souls on the plaza braving another cold day. mostly jason kennedy. jason kennedy's fan club. so nice of them. >> aren't they sweet to have shown up. >> inside studio 1a, i'm willie geist along with savannah and natalie morales and jason joining us, from "e." hillary clinton on capitol hill testify before the panel about the benghazi attacks, on
9:01 am
an afternoon, highly charged from both sides and the questioners and hillary clinton herself. let's watch. >> i stood next to president obama as the marines carried those flag draped caskets off the plane at andrews. i put my arm around the mothers an fathers, sisters and brothers and sons and daughters and lives left alone to raise their children. >> so obviously, getting emotional there, talking about the families and people who didn't come home, the four of them, also fired up at certain times, some people have zeroed in on the emotion, probably should be more focused on the content of hearings and people asking questions not just of hillary clinton but public figures what it means to cry in public, whether or not that's a good idea. >> obviously, this is very personal, as she said, these are people she knew well. i think it's a tough position to be in. she was speaking passionately about the heat of the moment and
9:02 am
also she just love those people. that was true emotion. >> i don't think it's as much a stigma anymore from public figures crying time-to-time. this is not anybody crying all the time. we've seen her well up in the past. this is the most emotional we have seen her. john boehner, speaker of the house is known to get quite emoti emotional. i think it used to be an issue when somebody is emotional. >> it depends on the situation. when president obama was talking about the tragedy in connecticut, this is a man who is a father, and the leader of our country, to see that emotion, i don't think there's anything wrong with it. >> i don't think there's a problem when it comes from a place of sincerity. when it looks political and calculated you run into trouble, which brings us to celebrities, jason, brings us to you a little bit. somebody did something wrong and think maybe the public will
9:03 am
forgive them. >> in 2007, right after kanye west lost his mother, he was in paris, decided to go on with the concert and go on stage and he could not get through the song at all. he left the stage 10 to 15 minutes. it was a very emotional moment and understandably for him. chris brown in 2010 at the beth awards he was doing the m.j. tribute and he lost it and he had gone through a lot before that performance and maybe thinking about his past. >> what about people faking emotion? >> let's take lance armstrong sitting down with oprah. he knew he had to show he was sorry in some way. it impacted him, it hurt him, that he knows he hurt other people. does he think going into that i better have a crying moment or am i too cynical? >> i just think if you go in thinking i better manufacture some emotion for public consumption, it will probably not go well, not coming from --
9:04 am
>> that broadcast news moment where hurst turn this camera on himself and has crocodile tears. that won't go over right. people know when it's real and not. i think in hillary clinton's case it is very real. >> very real emotion at the australian open yesterday. 15 time singles champ serena williams facing this new sensation, 19-year-old sloane stephens, more on her in a minute. sloane defeated serena williams and this moment after that, slamming her racket down. >> not once. >> a couple times and making sure she broke it and firing it to the bench. some people say bad sportsmanship and i think i agree with this side, she's competitive, wasn't throwing at her opponent. what do you think. >> by the way, we have seen this before in tennis. >> john mcenroe. she was throwing it at the judge. >> i don't know. i love tennis, my favorite
9:05 am
sport, i love serena. i don't think it's great sportsmanship. not that i don't understand or can't relate to, believe me if somebody plays tennis, the words that come out of my mouth, it's very frustrating, i get -- oh, yes. sometimes i thought about if i were a professional tennis player they could never do a tight shot on my face and you could read the lips and all the curse words flowing because it's so frustrating. i could relate but wish she hadn't. it's a real exciting moment for this young player who defeated her idol. >> she didn't curse. slammed her racket, going through it. hurt her back, lost her serve, limping. it didn't bother me at all? >> it wasn't like she was lip syncing the serve. >> these are competitive folks and how they get to be so good. >> she has had a moment in the pass she offered to do something with the tennis ball to the judge. >> they've all had their
9:06 am
moments. >> if you're a golfer, you're tempted to break that club. >> fifth grader, broke it over a tree and dad did not offer to buy me a new 5 on in. >> talking about a spanish runner yvonne, had a chance to run a big cross-country race. he chose to do the right thing. he was in second place behind the man you see in front, kenyan athlete. the kenyan athlete supposedly stopped because he thought the race ended 10 meters before it actually did. if you look there, he did the right thing, slowed up, told him the race had 10 more meters to run and let him win. he told the newspaper quote i did not deserve to win it. did what i had to do. he was the rightful winner. we all hope we would do the same thing in that position. >> i would not do the same thing. >> really? >> if it was a charity event. >> you're a -- >> break your golf club and what
9:07 am
else? >> if it's charity. if you are competing, i would run by him, it's still going on, you have to keep going this way, i would blow right by the guy. >> not talk to him a little bit? >> ryan seacrest, take note, jason's behind you. >> following after you. >> just trying to be honest. >> it is a tough call. it is most likely there's a big prize at the end, i mean, some big awards, lots of money. >> if it was the olympics, would you honestly do that, guys? >> would we honestly be even there. >> hypothetically. >> with reality -- >> she's not going to play professional tennis. >> we are questioning somebody doing the right thing. >> only jason. >> he's great. i just said i wouldn't do it. >> okay. so we know, you're a horrible -- >> you're a bad guy, jason but we love you anyway.
