a person is dead. investigators say two officers specialized and gun and drug enforcement in the area encountered a group of three individuals. when an officer tried to approach the man, authorities say the suspect fired in the direction of the officer. the officer chased after the suspect for six blocks. the suspect continued to fire shots at police. eventually police returned fire and shot the suspect, who later died. an officer was also taken to the hospital with an injury to his shoulder. >> old man winter wants to make sure we know which season it is. another blast of snow has moved in and out of our area. tom tasselmyer joins us with the details. >> this is a fast moving system. it arrived during the evening

rush hour. you can see the storm approaching. they have is of the snow came down on baltimore during rush hour. could still pick up a flurry overnight. with temperatures in the teens and 20's, there'll be icy patches throughout the night and into tomorrow morning. we have an update on how the city is handling the snow. >> yeah, exactly. timing is everything. a friday snowstorm on a friday afternoon did not make an easy commute. crews are still monitoring the highways to make sure that they do not raise over. there are still neighboring roads not in the clear. the snow cannot have come at a

worse time -- friday afternoon rush hour on a nice day is frustrating. as workers left to go home, the roads were a bit salty. >> some of the drivers are driving like they are speeding and cutting off other people. being idiots. >> they should not be idiots. >> despite the snow, the pavement on roads and highways held up well here it highway administration officials say there are salt trucks treating the roads that help deep the roads free from being treacherous in the baltimore region. silt -- salt residue is still around. as a high roads remain clear, many sidewalks were snow- covered. and slippery like this intersection.

call up a surprise witness who is called a jailhouse snitch who cannot be trusted. jayne miller has been following the case. >> in opening statements, there was suggestion of a love triangle at work. they claim that suspect, michael johnson, was a flirtatious and unthinkable boyfriend. the plan is to use a video that showed johnson intimate with deena while locking eyes with phylicia. there is no evidence to link johnson to flooul play. it is not about promiscuity. it is about the tragic loss of a young woman posing -- one's life. there was a surprise witness who they say saw barnes body. it is corrected as an acquaintance of johnson. on the day of question, johnson called in to come to the apartment.

he says there was a body on the bed, the body of phylicia barnes. it might be the strongest evidence that prosecutors have a link johnson to barnes's death. the witness did not come forward until june of this year and cannot be believed. a liar by all accounts who does not know anything about this case. the defense lawyers say that what caused her to die, how her body ended up in the river. they asked who would want to harm phylicia, she answered the older sister, deena. executors told jurors that she made horrible mistakes and was to develop or mrs. and her supervision of phylicia. wbal-tv 11 news. >> still ahead, putting brakes on the speed camera problems. and how to put money into the

are more proposals to increase the state gas tax. we have details. >> there are more gas tax increase ideas floating around in annapolis. >> some of those ideas are starting to coalesce. my hope is that we can get a critical mass behind a set of ideas so we can advance forward. it would allow the local government to raise the local gas by two cents per gallon. >> we have counties that come in and ask for hundreds of billions of dollars in transportation projects and then they say not to raise the gas tax. basically i'm putting it back on them. >> he likes the idea is so allowing locals to raise gas tax by $.10 per gallon. they are suggesting that the state lease to a private operator. they can use the funds to pay
