captions paid for by nbc-universal television and a very good morning to you. nice to see you today. i'm veronica de la cruz. this week, president obama puts immigration reform front and center on his agenda. on tuesday he will outline his overhaul in a major speech in las vegas, and even a bipartisan group of senators is on board to reform the system that impacts 11 million undocumented people in america. tracie potts has details for us. good morning. >> reporter: veronica, good morning. remember, this was a first-term promise not kept by president obama. tough time getting this through. lawmakers now, as you noted, democrats and republicans, are working together. they think they have the outline for something that may work in terms of tighter border patrols and employer verification, a guest worker program, and even a pass for citizenship for illegal immigrants. it's something that both sides, democrats and republicans, want, and in some cases both sides

need. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows, in an illegal status. >> first of all, americans support it in poll after poll. secondly, latino voters expect it. thirdly, democratsme want it. fourth, republicans need it. >> reporter: that is because of the last election in 2012, 70%, at least 70% of hispanics voted for president obama. the republican party saying they want to get some of that vote in 2016. veronica? >> tracie potts in washington. good to see you this morning. thank you. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton were interviewered in an unusual appearance together on "60 minutes." they talked about their primary battle during the '08 campaign and their relationship during the last four years. >> we had such agreement on what needed to be done for our country. >> made for tough debates. >> it did.

>> we could never figure out what we were different on. hillary mentioned, you know, part of our bond is we've been through a lot of the same stuff. and part of being through the same stuff is getting whacked around in political campaigns. >> uh-huh. uh-huh. >> being criticized in the press. you know, we've both built some pretty thick skins. by the time hillary joined the administration, i felt very confident and comfortable in all working relationship. i think what did evolve was a friendship as opposed to just professional relationship. egyptians in three suez canal provinces are under a state of emergency. they'll be subject to a curfew tonight. egypt's president, muhammad morsi, is hoping to prevent the fledging democracy from spinning outf control. we have more from cairo. >> reporter: two years ago,

egypt's streets were full of optimism and hope as a united people toppled a dictator. today, stifling teargas and plumes of smoke fill the air of a divided country. egypt's police are struggling to cope with the protesters. they, too, have suffered losses and are angry. when the country's interior minister came to pay his respects to fallen policemen, he was heckled by grieving colleagues and their families. and as it has for the past three days, nightfall brought more violence. outside a luxury five-star cairo hotel. with a predictable decision, police charged the crowd firing teargas. minutes later protesters returned lobbing stones and setting fires to block roads. there are few words president morsi can tell protesters. this man says the president must resign and new constitution must be written. another says only protests work with a regime that killed his

people. hundreds of families in brazil are mourning lost loved ones after a nightclub went up 232 people. officials believe the blaze display on stage. police say the majority of deaths were the result of smoke inhalation as the club's single exit was partially blocked by victims' bodies. this tragedy carries haunting similarities to a nightclub fire in rhode island back in 2003 that killed 100 people. and now to a dramatic rescue this weekend in eastern australia which has been dealing with widespread flooding. take a look at this. a helicopter had to be called in when a pickup truck carrying two women and a baby were washed off the road. the child, however, was too small for a regular rescue sling, so he was placed in a dive bag and then hoisted up to the helicopter by that incredible crew. absolutely amazing. now for a look at the

weather, bill karins with the forecast. i have something to tell you. >> okay. >> it's cold outside. >> getting warmer -- >> can you do something about that? >> we are. but tussle's going to be messy -- but it's going to be messy in the middle. snow, freezing rain. it will be a messy week. it started in the midwest, southern minnesota, rochester area. freezing rain reports, a lot of sleet. we had a lot of reports of thunder sleet and even thunder snow in areas of wisconsin. chicago had a lot of ice yesterday. and a couple hundred thousand people without power through the region. now everything is heading east, freezing rain throughout the mountainous areas of west virginia and virginia. across pittsburgh, we have freezing rain currently. and that mess is all heading across the state of pennsylvania into the northeast as we go throughout the day. it's critical, the temperatures. notice we're fine cleveland, detroit. chicago, you're fine, above freezing. this is the freezing line. snakes down just north of d.c. so anywhere from pennsylvania to

new jersey to southern new england, you're the ones we're concerned with as this heads east. white is snow. pink is freezing rain and sleet. green is the rain. you notice you start with snow, then we go to freezing rain and sleet. then over to rain. the worst of it right now heading across pennsylvania. a good burst of snow near altoona now, then it will change to freezing rain. again, that's starting to creep in on the greater washington d.c./baltimore area. the forecast, beginning as snow and turning to freezing rain outside of new york city, philly, southern new england. we'll talk more about the national forecast, but first here's a look outside your window. a messy day in philadelphia, but you will end up late in the day with temperatures above freezing. getting hold from school or work, much of new jersey, philadelphia, new york city areas, just fine. it's getting there as we'll deal with the problems this morning.

welcome back. here are stories making news this morning. the senate is expected to approve more than $50 billion in aid for victims of hurricane sandy which hit the northeast over three months ago. the pentagon is about to expand its cyber-security force five-fold to meet increasing threats against the nation's computer networks. the expansion would add 4,000

people to a unit that only has 900 employees now. two oil barges hit a railroad bridge on the mississippi river near vicksburg and began leading crude oil. the coast guard says a leaking tank filled with 80,000 gallons of crude has been contained. back in 1999, the colorado grand jury looking into the death of jonbenet ramsey voted to indict her parents on charges resulting in her death. but the court said there was not enough evidence in the case. president obama is a football fan that thinks the game will have to change because of the danger from the violent hits involved. the public told the new republic it will be better for the players, especially those still in college. casey anthony has filed for bankruptcy on debts of almost $800,000. she faces three civil lawsuits, but most of the money is owed to her defense attorney who won her acquittal in 2011 on charges of murdering her 2-year-old

clues for how long apple will hold on by largest company by market cap. and more on yahoo!'s turnaround after market close today. a slew of economic data out this week will help determine whether the s&p stays above the 1,500 milestone for the first time since 2007. later this week, we'll see how many americans landed new jobs last month and whether the unemployment rate dips below the current 7.8%. you may be hearing buzz about new credit card fees at the cash register thanks to a class action settlement between credit card companies and merchants. don't pack panic, experts don't think many retailers plan to impose that charge. at the pump, gas prices have jumped two cents in the last weeks to $3.34 on average for a gallon of regular. also on the rise, a first-class postage stamp up a penny to 46 cents. a study by the fresh produce association of america shows tomatoes could jump from $2.50 a

welcome back. now some stories that caught our eye this morning. an incredible high-speed chase in oklahoma city was caught on camera. leaning out the rear window, one of the passengers manages to unhook a trailer, sending it flying toward a car in oncoming traffic. slamming into a light pole and losing the rear wheels eventually slows the suspects to a halt. police apprehend the runaway driver. washington state park is facing a bizarre case of sticky fingers. 21 maple trees, some more than 100 years old, have been cut down and stolen from the park. rangers say based on the size

and nature of the pieces stolen, thieves took the fine wood to make maple guitars and violins. sadly, even if the thieves are caught, the century-old trees cannot be replaced. in tampa the pirates have taken over. yes, they have. hundreds of thousands of visitors flocked to the downtown parade this weekend to see the annual gasparilla pirate parade. they flocked to the waters in tampa looking for fun. the characters can be seen every year at the salty sea-faring tradition that dates back to 1904. to sports, the love fest of the nfl pro bowl, eli manning of the new york giants tossed two touchdown passes including one to minnesota's kyle rudolph, named mvp. they beat the afc 62-35. in the nba, carmelo anthony tied a franchise record with nine three pointers against atlanta. in the closing seconds, he made a three-point play to give the

welcome back to "early today." the big weather story is the severe weather outbreak tuesday and wednesday. notice this area of yellow under a slight risk. possible to moderate risk tomorrow. again, chance of tornadoes in the area and strong damaging winds going over the mississippi river. throughout the night in alabama, mississippi, tennessee. then during the day wednesday, it sweeps all the way to the east coast. we're talking severe weather for a large chunk of the country. the middle of this week, it will be dangerous. >> all right. thank you. screen actors guild awards. daniel day-lewis won for "lincoln" and jennifer lawrence picked up the award for "silver linings playbook." and which was the best of the worst? "parker" and "movie 43" had terrible reviews. burt reynolds was hospitalized this weekend with a severe case of the flu, spending time in the icu freezing. his rep said they were taking care of him and his mustache. and ashton kutcher was hospitalized after being doubled over in pain after a diet consisting of fruit, nuts, and seeds. huh. >> could lose a lot of weight on that diet. >> maybe it -- there's not -- i don't understand. it sounds healthy. >> try it and see how you do. >> i know.

this comes from rochester, minnesota. a nearby lake city. for once the cold made for ideal conditions. at the 2013 championship regatta of highs boat racing, hundreds flocked to the frozen lake for the annual adrenaline rush. those braving the cold say no other type of sailing twars to the thrill of skating across the ice at 60 to 70 miles per hour. >> i've never -- that looks fun. >> it does look fun. >> i've done snowmobiling on a lake. safe -- you're in the trees. that's nice. you can go as fast as you want. i don't know. that looks fun. a little dangerous. >> i was about to say, looks a little bit dangerous. yeah. i'm veronica de la cruz. this is "early today," just your first stop of the day today on your nbc stations.
