touchdown in new orleans, a super sendoff for the baltimore faithful. the team's focus shifts to the big game on sunday. purple pride is everywhere. >> on three. one, two, three, baltimore! >> and eerning everyone. kickoff for super bowl xlvii may be six actual days away but excitement is overflowing. we have team coverage. we have more on how fans are going to incredible lengths to display their ravens purple pride. we begin with gerry sandusky. he is live in new orleans. we start with that insane ravens rally at the inner harbor and tonight in the big easy. >> it doesn't get much better than that. that is a full day when you start with thousands of ravens fans in a driving rainstorm.

they were not at all affected by the weather. the weather in new orleans is spectacular. they got into town about 3:15. the super dome is spectacular. it stands out in the landscape as you come into new orleans. imagine how it looks for those who who never played at a super bowl. it was a 2 1/2-hour flight to new orleans. for some, the trip to the super bowl took 15 years. >> i mean, i don't think it stifled joe in any way like that. joe is joe. the progression of a quarterback and his career and what he has gone through and accomplished this year, it is just a progression. people are going to view it a certain way like oh, joe broke through. joe has been winning games since day one, since he got here. he is still a relatively young quarterback. >> and he has one more game to try to win this season.

if he wins it, he can cement his legacies as an elite quarterback. >> you know, we can't forget here that not only are we dealing with the super bowl, but also dealing with mardi gras as well. security is definitely going to be a premier yum. i spent the better half of the morning and i can't have with officials and police. let me tell you. they have this thing covered. >> as super bowl sunday nears in new orleans, its police department is gearing up for what could be a record number of visitors as not lonl ravens and 49ers fans be in town but oh, yeah, it is mardi gras too. >> basically the police department is the best department in the world in handlinging large crowds. >> the superintendent spoke with 11 news about how his department

is all too familiar with large crowds and this time will be no different. mounted units will be out in full first to control crowds and officers will make it a point to be seen. >> you will see on every corner there will be police officers. we wear the green reflective vests so that we're easy to see. >> there are agents in town helping assist local law enforcement sething up security buffers around -- setting up 300 feet. >> another big concern, all of the deliverries that need to be made to the stadium. each vehicle must come to this undisclosed location that we were given exclusive access to. each vehicle must be ex-rayed and each person in the vehicle must be fingerprinted. >> just anything that is a hazard.

>> in the end, all involved with security say it is all about having a good, safe time. >> the only thing we ask people to do is not do anything that hurts themselves or others. just remember that common sense and common courtesy equals common safety. >> if you are making the trip down here to new orleans, we provided some helpful links on our website, what is open, what is closed, where it is good to go to keep you safe. police just want folks to have a good time and just be smart about it because it is going to be a huge crowd here at the super dome. big crowds today in baltimore. we mentioned at the inner harbor. it sounds like ravens fans are going to do everything thoke make the feel -- make this feel like a home game. >> that is correct. i heard you mention that it is 70 degrees in new orleans. i can guarantee you ravens fans

are a lot more bundled up in their ravens purple. they can't help but to get swept up in the sbimet. >> it is just great for the city. we go to all the games. we have friends who we go with. >> just about everywhere you look -- >> fans are buying up all kind s of ravens gear. >> you have got to back the team and the stores that have all of this merchandise. and you back the city. it is important to back the city. >> the whole city is going crazy. >> the countdown is going on. no ravens fan would be caught unprepared. >> after the rally people just came in. they were so excited. they were buying everything. i mean, i can't keep enough of the stuff. it just flies off the shelf every day. >> jerseys, hats, t-shirts and even wedding dresses. >> must be a winner.

>> we found her getting fit for her purple wedding dress. >> that's a great look. >> she waited to marry her fiance jim until they made it back to the super bowl. she is eloping saturday before the game. the boutique called and offered her the perfect dress. >> it is one of the first ones that betsy showed me. ironically it actually fit. it was amazing. >> i'm giving her the dress, the atear. everything. i just love the whole story. i think it is great. they can have a fairy tale. it is a fairy tale life together. >> a fairy tale ravens style. it doesn't get much better. >> there are so many great pictures out there from fans today at the rally and all over baltimore. you can check them out at our website, wbaltv.com.

sunday's big easy matchup and look at slide shows ahead of the big game. just click on ravens at the top of the page. >> investigators tell 11 news one officer fired at a suspect to avoid being run over. gary is live with the late breaking details. >> police say they spotted a man on edmonton avenue tonight who appeared to be hiding a weapon. the officers said when they tried to approach the man and asked him what he was doing, he jumped in a car and careened towards them. the officers said they had to shoot him in the process. >> the detectives ascend to try to stop a suspicious man who triggered a chase. officers say shortly before 7:00 monday night they spotted by someone who appeared to be armed. >> when they confronted him, he entered his vehicle. if suspect fuzz vehicle in drive

in the direction taursd police officers. there are officers maneuvered out of the path of the oncoming car and drew their weapons in the process. >> at that point one of the police officers pulled out his service weapon and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle. the vehicle then fled. >> he sursurrendered and was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. >> police are scouring alleys and looking for any weapon the man may have had. at our last check, police have not found any weapon. no police officers were hurts during that chase. >> thank you. >> closing arblingts are set for tomorrow in the misconduct trial of john leopold. he did not take the witness

stand in his own defense. his lawyers rested after calling on one of his doctors and the county's personnel director. they asked judge dennis sweeney to throw out the case claiming the allegations by prosecutors did not constitute crimes. the judge denied that request. emotional and sometimes confusing testimony from a key witness in the trial of michael johnson. he is accused of murdering north carolina teenager phylicia barnes. today jurors heard from deena barnes, phylicia's older sister and the ex-girlfriend in the suspect in the case. deena said johnson made pass at phylicia. she added their relationship dissint grated after that night. deena testified a blue storage binn was missing after that night. prosecutors maintain johnson

some sad news to pass along tonight. delegate hatty harris, the longest serving delegate passed away this evening. she represented baltimore city, district 45. she was a tireless advocate for civil rights and workers right. she was first elected to the house of delegates in 1973 and 1979. she became the first african-american to chair a legislative committee in the maryland general assembly. she was 83 years old. darren swayne was sworn in by michael busch. he is an assistant vice president for alumni relations

at bowie state university. he previously served in the house from 1999. 2003. he is filling the seat of former delegate tiffany aton who was removed after settling two misconduct cases last year. opponents for the death penalty gathered at a rally. they support using the money saved from the repeal of capital punishment. they want beefed up law enforcement services. now to capitol hill and a rare bipartisan push for immigration reform. senators on both sides of the aisle unveiled a framework today for reform legislation. it includes a speedier path to citizenship and tougher border security measures. supporters call it a major breakthrough. >> it is not beneficial for our country to have these people

here, hiden in the shadows. let's create a stomach bring them forward. this will be a huge increase on the burden of already bleegered tax deleegered taxpayers. >> president obama is expected to lay out his vision for immigration reform tomorrow. the boy scouts of america is considering a big reversal tonight. they are thinking about lifting the decades long ban on openly gay scouts and scout leaders. if approved the policy change would end the national been a and allow -- ban and allow load troops to decide the issue for themselves. congress is sending a bill to president obama for his signature for super storm sandy. the measure is aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and

local government rebuild from the late october storm. the storm is blamed for billions of dollars of property damage. it doesn't seem like it was that long ago. >> it doesn't. if you're up there suffering, it seems like forever. >> that weather in new orleans makes you really want to be there. if you're going down later this week, say you have plans to be there just for the weekend, it is going to get a little bit cooler. you might want to factor that into your packing plans. there is going to be a little front going through. it is not going to be brutal by any stretch. the weekend forecast basically, highs in the 60's. nighttime lows in the 40's. if you're going down there for the weekend, you might neat a sweatshirt. minimal chance of a shower. of course ideal conditions for the game on sunday.

it was chilly today. freezing this morning at 30. then the late evening high temperature of 41. ened that rain, sleet, snow that came came through was falling to those freezing temperatures. it caused some freezing points. the showers have moved out. the snow is winding down in new england. we're left with all the moisture which means fog forming overnight. you can see all across the state, even in the western maryland mountains, way up in the 40's, the sign of milder air coming our way. 33-40 the lows tonight. mostly cloudy skies. dense fog. visibilities could drop under a quarter mile at times. very mild air in new orleans. temperatures well up into the 70's today. currently at new orleans international, 68 degrees with a light east the southeast breeze at 10 miles an hour. it is the warmth that is down in new orleans now, high today of 77 that is going to come surging into the lid flick region.

-- mid-atlantic region. some of the cold up into the northwest comes racing back into our region. the warm front leading the charge across the mountains into the mid-atlantic will be approaching tomorrow. thursday some of the cold air out of western canada returns to the mid-atlantic. watch for rapidly changing temperatures. tomorrow a lot of clouds around and fog in the morning. still warmer than normal. wednesday it is a front starts to approach, we'll see a line of showers and maybe a ribbon of thunderstorms coming through wednesday evening. then the blast of cold and mountain snow returns. it is going to be chilly to end the week. tomorrow may be 50 degrees in spots south of baltimore. cloudy skies and fog to burn off. rain showers. hold on, skiers. the cold and snow come back thursday, friday into the

the countdown super bowl xlvii is on with the ravens arriving in new orleans late this afternoon has settled in to the team hotel. a spectacular sendoff from the inner harbor as ravens fans showed up in miserable conditions to send the ravens to their first super bowl in 12 years. john harbaugh, ed reed, ray lewis all spoke to the fans. as you listen to the tone of ray lewis, the depth of his voice, you got a sense of the depth of

emotion he brought with him to new orleans. he spoke after the team arrived. he is now just days away from the final nfl game of his career. he is still n more focused on winning a trophy than wrapping up a hall of fame career. >> lay it out. what are we really here for? the bottom line is we're here to win a game. there is only two teams left right now. for us to be where we are now, we have to finish what we started the whole year. for me, that's one thing about when we came in 2000. there were so many guys that were so dialed in and so focused. that is the same thing i'm trying to spread to this team. >> you know, last year, you know, we felt we had a really good chance of making it, you know to, the super bowl and i was like this is what a super bowl team looks like. but then i was reminded in new england that you don't know what a super bowl team looks like because you have never been there. but we're here. it almost doesn't count.

you want to night this point. >> tomorrow here at the super dome, the show begins. not the showdown. just the show. media day tomorrow and that's when all the stars get to shine. not to mention the players who have a little extra personality. the 49ers will have the first media time and then the raven also follow tomorrow afternoon around 1:00. no shortage of stars. all dangerous in the back field. he says he is dangerous not just because he is talented. he is dangerous because he has so much talent around him which makes the 49er quarterback all the more unpredictable and dangerous. >> i think people have put too much focus on me. i don't think they realize the weapon swress on this team and the great offensive line that we have. there is a lot of other parts on this team that do great things that make it easy on me to go out there.
