flooding and some road closures. he came to work this morning to find the road in front of her business closed. >> it was a fast-moving storm. i watched channel 11. i figured we did not have much to worry about. >> in montgomery county, cars were trapped in the water. this person had to be rescued from her car. there was more flooding. you can see this taxi is under water. in laurel, their report -- the river is the problem. they have all of the gates open at the dam. they have closed some streets and there is a voluntary evacuations. >> right now we are doing a voluntary evacuation. we estimate because the people at work, 250 people could be impacted. >> we have never seen it like this before. i walk my dog down there.

there is no where to walk. >> folks were watching in laurel as the water rose to their condominiums. >> i used to make fun of her for flood insurance. now i understand. >> have you seen it like this before? >> not even close. i did not think it rained so much it would cause it to be like this. i do not know what happened. >> all they can do and wait and see how high the water gets. >> we are waiting to see how bad my dad. we are preparing for the worst. we are prepared to evacuate people and make it mandatory if we have to. >> now that we have an update on the flood situation, let's find out what we can expect weather- wise. tom tasselmyer? >> it was a torrential amount of warain.

you will see the heaviest totals falling in northern montgomery county, right on the upper stretches of the river. all of that water causing the flooding. that was an area that got anywhere from 3-6 inches of rain through baltimore county, and into northern montgomery county. really coming down quite a bit. flood warnings remain in effect in parts of frederick and montgomery county. southern pennsylvania, look out for those flooded areas. the wind advisory has come down. we still have a gust of 40 miles an hour at the airport. that cost is bringing in the cold and maybe some snow. we will check on that a little bit. >> this just in, and other crash tonight in baltimore county. all lanes of the inner loop are

hospital and he was conscious and alert. a teacher suffered cuts and bruises and was treated at the scene. the suspect has been identified as a student. the words of a high school shooting suspect could impact his efforts to have his case moved to a juvenile court. he is charged with attempted murder, accused of opening fire on students on the first day of school. barry simms joins us from circuit court with more on the story. >> the issues of remorse will be part of the judge's decision. today, he had to listen to his own words, what he said to police and others about both of those issues. hours after gunfire, police interviewed the suspects accused of bringing a shotgun to the campus and shooting him in the cafeteria. in that interview, robert gladden jr said he was trying to

make a statement. right now he is trying to get transferred from a dull to juvenile court. prosecutors are using his words to show he planned an attack and prove to a judge the trial should be in the adult system. the attorney objected to prosecutors to play portions of an interview police conducted with him. and recorded phone in detention center of in it -- visits in conversations in which to talk about the shooting, which wounded a special needs child. the defense claimed it was not fair and the statements would be taken out of context. the judge allowed and he shows detectives how people the shotgun from his clothes, pointed it at students and pull the trigger. he said he carried 21 bullets saying he "figured if he was going to do it, might as well to a lot. i wanted to get as many as i

could." he claims he had no agenda. he just wanted to make a statement. he used an expletive saying the world was a master of place. when asked about remorse, he said not really. prosecutors also played phone conversations and visits involving him. the conversations were monitored by detectives. in one recording appears to be him saying, i was the one who made myself an individual. i like that. they keep saying i was bullied. i was not believe at all. it is making me mad. another reference. i picked on more kids than kids picked on me. the judge said portions of the recordings are relevant. the defense asked him to listen to the full interview, which might be as long as 12 hours. other recordings in which he did show remorse.

>> prosecutors used phone calls to try to show michael johnson thought about pulling the country before he was charged. jim miller joins us downtown with the latest on the proceedings. >> prosecutors want jurors to think that what michael johnson said in text and on the phone is incriminating. wiretapped phone calls between michael johnson and relatives show he was worried about the barings case, the naafi thought about leaving the country. -- enough's he thought about leaving the country. i feel like i should pack up and

leave. the texts were intercepted after her body was found in the river, 10 months after she disappeared. johnson was the suspect in the case. i do not want to bet that is how i feel. i mean leave the country. in a phone conversation he worried his dna would be linked to her. he also spoke of the difference between first and second-degree murder. the investigator testified johnson did not confess. the investigation shifted from baltimore city to hartford county after her body was found in the river. witnesses appeared before a grand journey but no indictment was issued. what is it decided? yes, sir, the investigator replied. johnson was indicted by a grand jury. his defense is trying to show the case is tented by credibility problems. the lead detective is suspended

amid allegations he lied to investigators about what he did in the search for his daughter last year. jurors paid attention when johnson's lawyers grilled him about his own troubles. he answered he was not aware of the allegations. a computer expert testified today that barnes' last communication was a text message in which she told a friend, i know you love me, an hour before there was a search through her facebook page 4 the word "tabitha," the name of the woman johnson was dating at that time. johnson's phone was off one of communication from barnes went silent. -- when all communication from

barnes was silent. >> another connection between obesity and diseases. researchers and selling california say obese children might be at a high risk of multiples process. as you probably know, it is diagnosed in adulthood the researchers say it is more common in obese children and especially girls. data show that girls considered obese are up to four times more likely to develop multiple cirrhosis as a teenager. expanding your life span could be as simple as saying goodbye to meet. a study concluded that vegetarians tend to live long prevent people who eat meat or fish. researchers followed 45,000 adults and discovered that vegetarians had a 30% lower risk for heart disease. they also had lower cholesterol than those who ate meat which could contribute to vegetarian's reduce risk for heart problems. >> now your 11 insta-weather

plus forecast with tom tasselmyer. >> certainly a soaking rain fall across the area yesterday, especially to the north and west. the rain did not stop until early this morning. the rainfall was quite impressive and it caused the flooding conditions we saw in many areas. check out some of the totals for the storm system. over four inches. 3 and 1/4 inches and here at wbal, just under two inches for this storm. you can see the heaviest rain to the north and west, especially northern montgomery. right up there in the upper reaches of the river. all of that rainfall draining through the river and causing the flood problems. at the airport, three-quarters of an inch since midnight. and that is enough to get us a

bit of a surplus. half of an inch above normal for the month of january. a good soaking rain, wiping out the deficit we have been running. 63 u. the high today. and then the cold front came through. the temperatures falling throughout the day, getting us down to 38 degrees. there are still flood warnings in parts of the smaller streams. again, you could have flooded creeks in those areas. you have to use caution driving tonight. the wind has been gusting. up to 50 miles an hour at times, 39 at the naval academy, the winds are diminishing but not by much. a wind advisory on the eastern shore and in southern pennsylvania continues through the evening. the advisers for baltimore has been dropped. the wind out of the northwest,

bringing the cold and moisture of the great lakes and mountains. we have seen some snow showers. embedded in this flow is a fast- moving area of low pressure that will be getting very late tomorrow and tomorrow morning. we will see the clouds increasing overnight. some flurries in the morning. 21-21 degrees. we will see that system coming in, the mountain snow showers pushed east four o'clock in the morning and between four o'clock and 8:00, again, that could complicate the morning rush hour with some snow coming down. when the system leaves, it gets cold. not a lot of snow. in this area, up to an inch as possible. but it is coming through in the early morning. rush hour could be impacted. the wind will be the factor in the afternoon. a high of only 29 with gusts of

david collins is following that legislation. >> funny, isn't it, the need for speed is something republicans and democrats can agree on. legislators have developed a need for speed, but not in terms of getting work done. brother on the road leading to the job. there is bipartisan to raise the speed limit to 70 miles an hour. >> we are planning, even though it is counterintuitive, to increase the speed. >> the legislation singles out the icc and i-68. the toll is $8 for a round trip. lawmakers contend driver should be able to go faster. >> raising the speed limit would increase the value of being on the icc. >> prices for oil were going up.

personality of this town because he is a native. >> what was frustrating is he now so close last year. came up a little bit short to now he is finally here. we tried to get to the root of ed reed. we know he is a great football player but we do not know much about his personal life and how hard he worked to get here. he went back to louisiana, half an hour from here. we spoke to some of his coaches and his mother. to really know who ed reed is, you have to go where it all started for the future hall of famer, this high school, just outside new orleans. things were not always easy. his mother told that she and her father raced him and his four brothers in a one-bedroom house. she considers the day he was drafted a blessing from above. >> raising five kids was hard.

when he went to the nfl, that was it right there. with my five kids i was in a one-bedroom house. just like the kitchen and bathroom and the bedroom. >> he was an all state football player and also played basketball, baseball, and ran track. someone said the road to his success was tougher than the one to the nfl. >> a small kid but he was not self directed. he needed help in getting direction. >> then a mentor in the same system find out about him when he was in middle school. his wife was a teacher and saw he was going in the wrong direction. he took him under his wing and that was -- now is beside himself. >> it is emotional. we got close over the years.

i always felt he had the potential, and just to get him to realize and start working. he became a leader, the same he did at miami and in baltimore. just a great kid. he needed somebody to say get it done. you can make it happen. >> and now the tables have turned. reed is a football camp every year, mentoring up-and-coming star athletes, like william matthews, who has aspirations to play in football at college. >> he lets me know i have something to look forward to. every time i am working i push myself harder. >> it is stories like that that led to the school doing something unthinkable back in 2005, they retire his number.

his coach gave a speech. >> his heart is as big as the world. fun to be around. i am so glad he was a part of my life. >> the coach has said he has been always be humbled by reed in his charity toward others. now to see him in the super bowl does not surprise him. >> nobody deserves it more than ed reed. >> ed reed! the 10,ng to take it to 5, touched down, ed reed!. >> an amazing individual on and off the football field. i spoke to everyone there because there are a lot of questions whether or not if he wins the super bowl, if the raven's wing, will he retired? all of them till he will be back next year. >> they must be so proud of him.

>> a hostage situation continues in alabama. authorities continue to wait out the suspect who has been holding a boy hostage. he kidnapped the boy off of a school bus on tuesday afternoon after he shot and killed the driver. hostage negotiations have been speaking to the suspect where he

the archbishop and superintendent also paid visits to two other schools in baltimore county. tim tooten, wbal tv 11 news. >> more tonight about a crash last night in baltimore county that left one person dead and another injured. police have identified the woman killed as sandra vogel. we were there last night as authorities were gathering information. police have confirmed she was driving in the wrong direction and crashed head-on with another car. the person in the other vehicles is being treated. the crash team is investigating. investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a woman in west baltimore. police confirmed it was a 75 in year-old found dead. her daughter was able to escape.

picture-perfect conditions under the dome for the game on sunday. here we have had a change with the front dumping heavy rain. temperatures were in the 60's. and then it went by and we are setting new lows for the day. down to 37 at the w. y. marshall. flood warnings in parts of fredrik, montgomery, along their river and southern pennsylvania. you have to use some caution in small streams and creeks. the wind advisory continues in southern pennsylvania. we are continuing to see 40 miles an hour at the airport. it is a breezy evening. the wind will do -- diminished tonight in taken tomorrow afternoon. it is cold. the wind chill down into the 20's. look at all of the snow showers to our north and west. enhanced by the moisture of the

great lakes. another klipper comes our way tomorrow with a chance for snow in the morning. we will see flurries just before dawn. clouds will increase in temperatures will drop into the 20's. the winds 10-15 miles an hour. the main impact will be for the friday morning rush hour. anywhere from 5:00 in the morning until 8:00 on the eastern shore and moving off the coast. by late morning we should see clearing skies and afternoon sun. it is going to be cold again tomorrow. perhaps light snow in spots. the chilly temperatures in the afternoon. a dusting up to an inch possible tomorrow. it will be gone by the middle of the day. the rest of the day will feature the wind and cold. 29 degrees. if you're going into the mountains, plan on some snowy conditions.
