captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> a tiny bit of relief for those living in the northeast corner of the country. the historical blizzard that pounded the region overnight has moved offshore but that left plenty of damage behind. massachusetts was one of the hardest-hit states. j. gray has a closer look at the aftermath. >> good evening. in some areas, the snow is almost two feet deep. what we are learning is the determination to fight back runs deeper. the wind and snow have finally stopped and across it in when the focus has turned to what would be a typical recovery. >> the police and national guard have been working in tandem. >> but these are the most important teams right now -- crews working through brutal conditions to restore power to hundreds of thousands, many still without heat. >> we are working hard.

we are working 16 hour shifts. in this weather, that's tough. >> it was tough to dig out dozens of cars. across the region, many of the roads have reopened but are very messy and public transportation is offline. which means of those who want to get around have to be a bit creative period >> going down the hill. trying to ski in boston for the first time. >> sleds, even a kayak. but for longer trips, airports have reopened but flight options are limited. for most here, the journey is not as much about distance as it is determination. their destination -- back to the way things were before the storm. a trip that will not take days but weeks. >> here in maryland, the storms there is but a few dozen utility

crews are up north dealing with the large amount of power outages in the region. sarah sampson is at bge headquarters. >> whatever there is a weather event, utility companies up and down the east coast to try to help each other out. there were hundreds of thousands without power in new england and the dna is working to restore the power. -- and bge is working to restore the power. fighting snow, hurricane strength winds and 650,000 people were without power. friday when most people in the region were hunkering down, crews headed towards the storm. >> we sent 40 of our personnel up to new england. so they could help out with the outages. >> massachusetts was the hardest hit. officials say 400,000 were without power. next was rhode island were 180,000 or 1/4 of all households

were in the dark. baltimore crews are working in connecticut were 38,000 customers are impacted. >> they are working around the clock so they can get customers back into service as quickly and safely as possible. >> the spokeswoman says that they are part of several assistants networks up and down the east coast. >> we will request crews from other states that have not been a hit as hard as maryland. when other states are hit hard by harsh weather, we can make sure we can send some of our crew to help them, as long as not to jeopardize in our own system. >> if that is why they decided -- have not decided whether or not more crews will head north. forecasters are saying another storm could be headed in this direction. >> once we see what the weather does, we could send additional occurs if requested. >> in maryland, the only part of the storm system we felt was the wind. about 4000 people lost power because of it.

less than 100 of them were still without power at last check. >> well, we were scared for that, but you say another storm is on the way. >> the wins in that storm got up to hurricane force. we only had winds into the 40's. they got all the snow. we just had rain in a couple places let's look at the radar. and show you how this storm progressed. during the day today, there was some of night before, too, but you can see how the storm was spinning off shore. the snow bands stayed over connecticut and massachusetts and rhode island. a good part of the day today. here are the estimates of how much snow fell. these are not all necessarily the totals, but in the ranges of the 6-1 2 on the cape. west of boston, 24-36 inches of

snow. in connecticut, 36 plus inches of snow. that is an average that the rate are estimated. those are phenomenal numbers. i believe they have updated boston. this is the fifth biggest snowstorm may have had on record. boston will get some rain and some snow but they got all snow on the storm. there is more out there. we are set up to see the potential for another storm. >> baltimore city police make an arrest in the deadly triple shooting in january. we are told at 26-year-old ricky horton shot two men and a woman of around 530 on january 15. we learned that a 25-year-old died from his injuries. the chairman of the maryland republican partay is resigning.

he announced his resignation today declaring a desire to pursue other ventures. his resignation takes effect on march 1. diana waterman will serve as the chair until the spring convention when a new chair will be elected. of former maryland first lady could be jumping into the political scene. kendall ehlich will join the republican delicate and the u.s. senate candidate in teh forum on thursday, february 14. applications must be submitted to the county council by noon the next. john leopold resigned after he was found guilty of misconduct. they have 30 days to fill the seat. no one has submitted an application of small brick for

always had medicinal purposes and for the thousands and thousands of years, and certainly tonight, it is medicinal. >> healthcare for the homeless aims to get people off the streets and provide them with health care, addiction treatment and social services. today was also at a day of celebration in server in a park where the park for shop hosted eva conklin day. the 10-year-old was diagnosed with the tumor last year. she underwent surgery to remove the tumor but then caught meningitis and had to be placed into a medically induced coma. she has suffered a series of strokes and she was left with only the ability to blink. her father was humbled to receive more than $6,300 in donations. >> what it allows them to do is that she will have many years of their big pictrapy.
