is firing back after police say they found testosterone and needles in the runner's bedroom. the defense says police found an herbal remedy that is not a banned substance. rescuers are searching for a missing person this morning after a huge explosion and fire in kansas city. a gas main break touched off the explosion at a restaurant during dinner time last night. the blast engulfed an entire city block. it was so powerful it could be felt blocks away. more than a dozen people were injured and several were taken to local hospitals. police have identified the gunman in a deadly shooting spree in southern california. officials say a 20-year-old student, ali sayed, went on a rampage, killing three people, wounding several others before turning his gun on himself. police are still searching for a motive, but what caused sayed to go on a killing spree that spanned several counties and several carjackings. general john allen is retiring. he got caught up in that e-mail

scandal that brought down cia director david petraeus. he is stepping down to focus on family health issues. president obama praised him as, quote, one of america's finest military leaders, a true patriot and a man i've come to respect greatly. the vice president is generating some buzz after a facebook town hall chat with parents magazine. in a discussion focusing on joe biden's gun control efforts, he gave some frank advice on self defense. >> if you want to protect yourself, get a double-barrel shotgun. you don't need an ar-15. buy a shotgun. buy a shotgun. >> the vice president says he has two shotguns of his own at his home in delaware. just out this morning, we're getting the first look at dan brown's latest book jacket. his new novel, as you know, is called inferno. we revealed that on the "today" show a short while ago. it brings back his character, robert langdon of da vinci code

you did say you call it save the marriage night. >> not that our marriage is in jeopardy. >> right. >> but 20 years later, five young children later, it is an absolute must in our house. and i think it took me a while to learn that especially when i was working full time with my first three children, i would feel guilty going out, leaving them. i thought that evening time should be children time. and then i get out of the kitchen, i felt sexier, more interesting, more engaging. we would catch up on what was important to us and all the troubles and worries kind of melt away. if you don't take care of the foundation of the family, which is mom and dad, it could crumble. >> what about you, rachel? >> i couldn't agree more. i can tell in my marriage when we don't do it that things start to happen. like we feel more like business partners and we don't feel like lovers. and, again, i think you're absolutely right. i think it's a really good thing as parents to remind ourselves it's good for our kids to model

good relationships and to keep that spark alive. >> and you schedule it once a week? do you go every week? >> i wish i could. my husband's schedule is very crazy. we do try. i wee got away a little bit. >> you say no on the date night. why is that? >> for me, my life is so scheduled already that one more thing is just one more thing. it's like oh, my gosh, now i have to plan this date night. it's got to be perfect. we have to have a happy ending. for me, i just enjoy -- my kids are a little older. my youngest is 12. we can be at home alone. we enjoy just catch iing up on couple of our tv shows that are kind of just our that we watch together or watch a football game, which i don't understand and my husband explains to me. it's wonderful and bonding. that's how we do it. it's very -- >> as long as you're still bonding. >> it's not a fancy thing. i live in wisconsin. i'm going to fish fry. it doesn't have to be super

need to be home. i did continue to work part time so i could hopefully launch myself, eventually. and i'm ready now to come back to work. >> rachel, you said moms make the best hires, right? >> i think they absolutely do. it's a good thing to keep your fingers in the pie if you think that's something you want to do. everything has its trade-offs. i was pursuing a career in television and just really came to an epiphany where i thought i could live without having that amazing career. i didn't, for me personally think i could live with being 50 and having missed those moments. that's a personal choice and that's what's so great about the era we live in where staying home and choosing to work is a choice, but i think you can do a lot of things at once now, with technology. >> true. >> working from home. it's not impossible. >> and a pediatrician, what you're doing every day is so important. like you said, you love it. you have no regrets. >> i never stepped back. i worked full time my whole

life. i have three children. you know, i think that for me it was just who i am. i'm very true to who i am. i spend time with my kids. it's funny because it feels like people who say you're a stay at home mom or working mom, like the working mothers never see their children. >> not true. >> i said to my 20-year-old when he was younger, do you wish i had stayed home? he said why, you're around all the time. for my children they understand what i do is important for me. it does feed my soul, what i do for a living. i think it's important and i love it. one of the great things is if you have the choice -- many women do not have the choice. they must work. >> that's true. >> my mother had to work, my grandmother worked. i'm from a culture of women who worked. it doesn't seem awkward to me. if you step back and do nothing for ten years and then try to step back into the workforce, that's very, very difficult. and so i think what we're hearing everybody saying is that if you keep your hands in a little bit so that when it's time for you to move back in, you've got something you can do that you've got a skill set that you can share.

to stream content on my tv? >> this is a great question. you're right. back in the day -- you know this, it used to buffer and buffer and buffer and streaming video never worked well. getting online content from the web, in this case to his television set. >> right. >> a lot of options are out there. things like the apple tv. >> sure. >> which is great. you can also do other cool features like share videos wirelessly from your phone to your television. you have the bots, that are very inexpensive. you may already have something in the house like your gaming console, x-box, sony playstation or your blu-ray player may have smart tv capabilities. >> there's also the other parts of that like netflix, hulu. >> that's right, amazon, all those other providers and most of those are available on these different types of devices but there's no subscription fee for the devices. you pay a subscription for netflix or -- >> for the content.
