time. we've now been listening for an hour and a half to him outline every detail of this case. that was all very objective, straightforward. what we've been listening to for the past four days. now, though, the judge is getting into his opinion. he criticized the state's case, saying that some of the evidence presented was just circumstantial and the chief police investigator contradicted himself, gave wrong information. but, he says, he also has problems with pistorius' account of what happened that night. especially since pistorius described himself as feeling so vulnerable that he wanted to get his gun and start shooting. the judge asked, okay, then why did he rush into danger when so many opportunities were available to him? it's really difficult to tell at this point which way to go. we expect the ruling, though, any minute now. carl? >> michelle kosinski in pretoria, thank you so much. the winter storm that dumped snow on the plains is moving

east. 14 inches of snow smothered wichita, kansas, the other day. plows struggled to keep up as the snow came down at throw inches an hour. one plane got stuck in snow at the wichita airport. kansas and missouri declared states of emergency. the storm should reach new england this weekend. deadly shootout in the heart of the las vegas strip. three people were killed and six others injured in the shooting and a fiery crash that began outside the resort. a black range rover fled the scene after allegedly opening fire on a massachusetts raerati. although virtually expressionless throughout the trial, peterson burst into screams just before his sentence was read, yelling, quote, i did not kill kathleen. the victim's sister shouting back "yes, you did. you liar." 59-year-old former police officer may still be charged in the disappearance of his fourth wife, stacey peterson.

starting new figures showed this year's flu vaccine may not be very effective at protecting the age group most vulnerable to the illness, the elderly. this year's vaccine is only 9% effective in people 65 and over against the harsh flu strain this season. health officials still suggest everyone over 6 months get the flu shot because some protection is better than none. those vaccinated may still get the flu but with less severe symptoms. the animal stood on the ledge of a multi-story parking ramp in australia for nearly two hours on thursday. officials were concerned that if they started it, it would jump. an animal control officer was eventually able to hit the wallaby with a tranquilizer gun. everyone makes mistakes in their youth but not everyone posts them on youtube.

welcome back to a special edition of "today." we'll have much more from here at miami beach in a moment. first we want to go straight to carl quintanilla up in new york with breaking news in the oscar pistorius case. carl? >> willie, thanks. pistorius has just been granted bail. michelle kosinski is at the court in pretoria. good morning. >> reporter: carl, after more than an hour and a half of the judge's ruling leading up to that point we finally do know he will be granted bail. that's not a big surprise to a lot of people because of the way the system works here, but the judge made it seem so. you really couldn't tell throughout his ruling which way this was going to go. first he spelled out pretty much every element of evidence that was presented and disputed then

by the defense. that was something we expected him to do. that's just part of the process, part of the law. then the judge started getting into his own opinions about what was presented. he criticized the state's case saying some of the evidence they presented was merely circumstantial, some of it through the chief police detective was just wrong. he said not all of the work was done that should have been done. but then he said, still that does not mean that that was the state's case, that the state's case could still be much stronger. then he said he had problems with pistorius' account of what happened early that morning, that he felt so vulnerable that he needed to grab his gun and start shooting. it sounded like the judge didn't exactly buy that. he said why, then, did pistorius rush into danger when he had so many opportunities available to h him? he kept going back and forth that way. the judge finally ruled that he does not see pistorius as a flight risk. he does not have a propensity for violence. he will be released on bail, carl. >> michelle kosinski in pretoria
