lot of it. >> these revelations are getting a lot of attention and we're learning now this goes well beyond just the verizon customers and phone data, also includes surveillance of the internet targeting foreign terrorists as well. >> we want to get right to nbc's peter alexander at the white house with more on the story. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. these were some of the most sensitive secrets in counter-terror data collection and one of the programs allowed analysts to actively monitor the internet in real time searching for potentially suspicious e-mails, photos, and documents. sources familiar with the programs confirm to nbc news the national security agency and the fbi are tapping directly into the computer servers of some of the biggest names in the internet. "the washington post" reports they include apple, google and facebook. the secret program's code names, prism and blarney.

some of the companies responded insisting they don't provide any government agency with direct access to their servers. the obama administration defends the practice as a critical tool to protect the country, providing what a senior administration official called "among the most important and valuable intelligence information we collect." sources say it's intended to cover communications that originate outside the u.s. or from the u.s. to a foreign country. administration officials say the program does not allow the targeting of any u.s. citizen or anyone within the uts. u.s.. the revelation follows news of another secret program where under the post-9/11 patriot act the government is compiling an enormous data base of phone records collecting details on every call made in america, not only foreign calls but no names and no listening in. glenn greenwald broke the story. >> there is this massive surveillance that the united states government has built up that has extraordinary implication force how we live as

"i'll save you all some time. i'm not a terrorist" said one twitterer. >> we know that, it's important. >> reporter: overnight the director of national intelligence, james clapper, spoke out. he declassified some information about these programs. he defended them as being entirely legal, about the leak, about the internet program, he called it reprehensible and about the phone records program he indicated that the disclosure of that program "threatens potentially long-lasting and irreversible harm to our ability to identify and respond to many threats facing our nation." >> peter alexander, thank you very much. andrea mitchell, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> this gets bigger and bigger. all these phone calls are being

recorded digitally not for content but for origin and destination. now word the government is going into the servers of the large internet companies. how does the government politically speaking make the argument that this is essential to national security and not a dramatic overreach in terms of personal privacy? >> it's difficult, matt, because as peter was pointing out overnight we had a late night close to midnight announcement of declassification from the director of national intelligence. they are scrambling. the administration's supported strongly by leaders in both parties from the intelligence committees arguing the telephone tracking program has broken off plot and broken one terrorist plot inside the united states from taking place. the argument is they've been authorized and reauthorized by a secret court and by congress, it's still shocking to a lot of people the scope of it. none of us experts who supposedly follow all this knew that this involved every single phone call and direct dives into

the internet for content. >> and a couple of elements of bad news for the administration. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal" polls show the americans are questions the obama's administration's honesty with the irs, benghazi and the phone taps. "the new york times" says "the administration has now lost all credibility on this issue. mr. obama is proving the truism that the executive branch will use any power it's been given." how much damage has been done? >> it's not just going after the reporters on the leaks going too far. perhaps this narrative would not have been developed quite so strongly, now it does seem that this administration is snooping and even though they argue it's necessary for national security reasons it creates a big problem. back in 2005 on the floor of the

morning andrea, the first named storm of the year, is wreaking havoc. >> everybody laughed about it in jacksonville because they also act like they're going to come toward us and they don't. >> reporter: they weren't laughing in florida thursday when winds and rain battled jacksonville leaving roads flooded and forcing some to fill sandbags. >> the biggest problem we have is the risk of tornadoes. >> reporter: governor rick scott warned residents to stay safe. at least eight confirmed tornadoes were spun off by andrea, one not far from west palm beach toppled trees, buckled walls and moved a large cargo container. an 85-year-old woman in this house was injured. >> knocked her out of bed, had both her legs program. >> reporter: a close call for the rivera family. >> i grabbed my daughter out of the bedroom, head for the bathroom, the wall came down. >> reporter: this morning, andrea swirling up the east coast, its winds felt up as far

flood warning in effect. here's the path of the storm, becomes a low pressure system late this afternoon, skirts along the coast south of new york early saturday morning and off the new england coastline by saturday afternoon. for today we have qualified watches, flood watches and flood warnings for parts of the carolinas. tropical storm warnings from georgia to virginia, heavy rain, qualifieding and rainfall amounts up to five inches from charlotte to boston and on into portland with heavy rain and new york city has a qualified warning as far as the office of emergency management, as far as travel is concerned so it's going to be a real soaker but the good news is it's moving fast and it will be out here pretty quickly. matt? >> al, thank you very much. the president begins a crucial two-day summit in california today with china's new leader. it comes in the wake of new information uncovered by nbc news about how president obama's campaign was actually targeted by chinese hackers. nbc's white house correspondent
