convince the outside world the situation is well in hand. this dutch nurse was killed with her boyfriend. she worked for the clinton foundation and was remembered today by the former president. >> they went to nairobi because they thought it was the safest place for her to give birth, and they were just walking in the mall that day. and they were both killed along with the child. >> reporter: in nairobi, the funerals have begun, including this one for a 16-year-old girl. >> there is no word to express what we are going through. we are deeply saddened by what has happened to every person, every family who has gone through this. >> reporter: and as this nation begins three days of official mourning, many questions remain. what happened to the hostages? were they all rescued or did some terrorist join the effort to free them? the president did not say.

>> ron, so tough to see the pictures, especially of the children, ron allen, starting our broadcast off tonight. and one person was inside the mall, meeting a friend for lunch when the attack began. she is now back home safely in this country, and described to nbc tom costello about her harrowing ordeal, and how she lived to tell about it. >> nice to see it. you survived. how do you feel? at dulles airport this afternoon, this american was finally back home. >> it's okay, it's okay. it's okay. >> reporter: a harvard-trained lawyer with the world bank, bendita was in kenya having lunch with a friend when terrorists ran in. >> and then all of a sudden there was this explosion, and everybody like hits the floor. and we hear machine guns. and it was maybe ten seconds

later, still trying to crawl out. it was a second explosion. but when they first came in, they were just shooting. i mean, they were not asking any questions, they were just shooting. >> reporter: crawling away from the gunfire, bendita and her friend made it to an employee break room in a nearby store and waited with 15 other people. their only defense, a fire is distinguisher. >> and then we would just hear like random things, like christian, muslim, and then people would respond, don't shoot, and then you would hear some people walk and some get shot. >> reporter: for five hours they h hid, listening to the gunfire, she said to her father, please pray, i love you very much. >> you just feel so helpless,

you know? and then out of nowhere, an american security team showed up. >> this american forces security guy came back and said look, we have been under a lot of pressure to get you out. if you guys want to get out, we understand it is dangerous, but this is probably your best shot. >> reporter: everybody in the store room ran from the mall. >> and then like within 30 feet of us, two grenades are thrown. and that was our first breakdown. >> reporter: she says she doesn't know yet if she will return to kenya, but for now, she is home. tom costello, nbc news at dulles airport. >> incredible story, and now to another big story we are following tonight, mindful of the ronald reagan era phrase "trust but verify," we did hear it with our ears tonight, there was the president of iran addressing them in new york, calling for talks, transparency, good will with the united states saying there is no place for

nuclear weapons in iran's arsenal or in the religion. we're about to hear that phrase "trust but verify." turns out there was no meeting with the iran and u.s. presidents. our chief correspondent andrea mitchell is covering it. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian, it was just supposed to be a chance encounter, not even a formal meeting. but today, president obama and the iranian president were both right here at the u.n. and never caught sight of each other. mid-town manhattan today in total grid lock, more than 100 heads of state, motorcades and protesters and a security crackdown. at the u.n., president obama tried for a diplomatic breakthrough, testing the recent overtures from iran. >> we are encouraged. >> reporter: the president

signalled they would welcome the meeting between the u.s. president and when the shah met the president in the past. rouhani did not show. some said it was because wine was served. >> cheers. >> reporter: the u.s. official said it was too complicated, in other words, politically risky for rouhani to be seen with obama, given the hardliners at home. the president left the u.n. without ever meeting rouhani, he said the closest he ever came was when his motorcade passed his vehicle. >> reporter: in the past, mahmoud ahmadinejad denounced the u.s. they still criticize u.s. policy, they call sanctions against iran violent. still, he pledged iran is open to talks to dissolve the nuclear

disputes and said iran does not want nuclear weapons. >> i am hoping that they will refrain of following the short-sighted interests of war-mongering pressure groups. we can arrive at a scene to manage our differences. >> reporter: the israeli delegation walked out before rouhani even started to speak, saying he could not betrusted. rouhani's speech was tougher in part, than some may have expected. they say overcoming decades of distrust is not going to be easy, even with this iranian leader. >> andrea mitchell, in what has become fortress new york. and now we turn to the big fight over health care, one week from tonight marks the new health care law, open enrollment begins for the exchanges, coming as republicans are pushing to take away the funding for it.

tonight, some comments 43 made about 44 are getting some comments because they are about playing golf. president obama, as you know, sometimes finds himself under attack for playing golf, a presidential tradition going back to the club, really. but in our nbc special report, the former president, who knows the pressures of the job and is a golfer himself says it is good for him.

speech is putting the spotlight on solitary assignment. >> he is in a penitentiary manage maryland serving out a 10-year sentence on drug charges. >> we know that life in a federal penitentiary is tough but michael douglas said his son cameron is facing an excessive two years in solitary confinement. >> he is in solitary because he reportedly failed a drug test while in prison. michael douglas slammed the prison system backstage. >> he spent almost two years in solely tar rei confinement and right now i am being told that i cannot see him for two years. >> a headline on salon.com says cameron douglas solitary confinement is barbaric. prisoners are alone between 22 and 24 hours a day. they are fed through a slot in the door and deprived of natural light. but larry levine who served 10 years for drug trafficking and
