you know, we need money now. >> reporter: something like 7 month old harper's $300 emergency room visit this weekend for an ear infection could be a financial disaster, a hard reality i they'd like congress to understand. >> i shouldn't pay the price because you can't agree. >> reporter: frustration growing in families paying the price for gridlock in washington. john yang, nbc news chicago. >> today the white house said it is trying to fix glitches a lot of people are encountering as they sign up for private health insurance using the new online ex changes. there is still a traffic jam especially in the 36 state where is the federal website is the only option. white house says more than 6 million people tried to log on. we don't know how many of them managed to enroll. we know a lot of them are seeing a frustrating online message. "we have a lot of visitors on the site right now, please stay on this page." the white house promises they are adding more capacity.

there's been a terrible accident involving a church bus on tennessee's i-41. the bus filled with seniors crashed into a semi and an suv. at least eight are dead tonight. more than a dozen injured. we have a late report from nbc's tom costello. >> reporter: on i-40 near the i-81 split in northeastern tennessee, smoke, fire, and miles of backup. state troopers say a church bus blew a tire and crossed the median, slamming into a tractor-trailer and sport utility vehicle. >> it was a loud boom. it sounded like an explosion. i was several miles away. >> reporter: at least eight people are known dead including six senior citizens on the church bus that had come from a jubilee gathering returning home to statesville, north carolina. people along i-40 say they have seen a lot of crashes lately. >> in the last six months there's been quite a number of 18-wheeler accidents in this area. >> reporter: after a series of horrific bus crashes in recent

years involving dozens of fatalities is department of transportation began cracking down on bus operators. >> come off the bus. we have to do an inspection. >> reporter: the focus, the busy i-95 corridor from washington to florida. roughly 40 discount bus companies were put out of business. it is not the clear if the bus was hired or houn owned by the church. >> while churches operate buses they don't have professional drivers and often don't operate to the same standards professional bus companies do. >> reporter: in northeastern tennessee with so many dead i-40 is ex-ebb expected to re main shut down into the night. tom costello, nbc news, washington. the fbi today shut down what it's calling the most sophisticated internet site in the business of selling hard drugs including heroin, cocaine and lsd. our justice correspondent pete williams following this story

for us in our d.c. newsroom tonight. pete, good evening. >> reporter: brian, fbi agents say they have been closing in on the operation for two years, even making over 100 purchases of illegal drugs from the site and having it all shipped to them in new york. anyone trying to log onto the site today found this notice -- shut down by the fbi. when it was running, federal prosecutors say the website known as silk road was the biggest bazaar for illegal drugs on the internet, an international marketplace with a sideline in illegal hacking software. prosecutors re veal ed today uh they arrested the man accused of rub running the site, a 29-year-old with degrees in physics and engineering. >> he was a dream for drug users. he was very technically adept and was able to hide both the website he put together and the actual sale s of illegal drugs that drug sellers would make on

his website. >> reporter: investigators say in the two and a half years it was operating it generated roughly $1.2 billion in sales. with nearly 960,000 users, both buyers and sellers in the u.s. and more than a dozen other countries worldwide. court documents say the site urged sellers to vacuum seal packages to avoid detection by canine or electronic sniffers and urged buyers to have shipments sent to a friend's house or a p.o. box. investigators say it was an on oh line market for virtually any illegal drug imaginable including heroin, cocaine, lsd and methamphetamine. the fbi says this ad offered high quality heroin, all rock, conveniently vacuum sealed. a reporter for forbes magazine wrote in august about buying marijuana off the silk road website. >> it absolutely worked. it was very professional. sort of seamless e-commerce.

if you have been driving a car and found yourself in a swarm of oncoming motorcycles it may look familiar. what happened in new york this weekend took an ugly and violent turn. as nbc's stephanie gosk reports country. >> reporter: as motorcycles chase a family with a small child up manhattan's west side, 911 calls flooded in to report the terrifying scene. before police could reach the black suv the riders smashed the business executive's windows, pulled him from the car and beat him, his wife and child were unhurt. >> the defendant's license to drive is suspended. >> reporter: one of the alleged motorcyclists, christopher cruz, was arraigned in court charged with reckless driving and unlawful imprisonment. cruz and the other motorcyclists chased the suv after his bike was bumped when he stopped short in front of the vehicle. >> he had absolutely nothing to do t with the beating that occurred at 174th street. >> reporter: the family of

another rider severely injured and possibly paralyzed when he was run over by the suv is defending the group. >> it's not a gang. they don't wear the same clothes. they're just a family. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say the groups are growing in number and aren't easy to stop. videos are posted online like trophies. in dallas, riders taunt police in pursuit. in san francisco, motorcyclists break through a police blockade. in st. louis, riders take over the highway for high speed wheelies. >> you can't chase them. they're crazy. they endanger themselves and others. there have been several incidents where several of them have been injured. >> several of the groups go out just to cause havoc. >> reporter: they brace for trouble every weekend when the trouble is nice. how powerful are they as a group? >> they are very powerful. depending on how many there are, their motorcycles can hit speeds of 150 plus.

there is controversy among some of the families of those buried at arlington cemetery after a cleanup of section 60, the burial ground for over 800 of the recent dead from our most reevent wars in iraq and afghanistan along with veterans from other wars. until recently it was full of mo men tos at many grave sites. as a washington post writer described it, a raw messy burial ground of wars still being fought. the cemetery has embarked on a

full scale cleaning, saving some me men tos in storage. it was decided to be kept to the same cleanliness standard as the rest of the cemetery. another note, the government shutdown has also shut down u.s. cemeteries overseas including the vast d-day cemetery in normandy. southwest airlines announced it's fired the captain of the 737 that landed nose first at new york's laguardia airport this july. nine people were injured that day. air traffic was bottled up for hours. the former captain was a 13-year veteran with the airline with over 12,000 hours of flight time. we now have the first pictures from space of the newest island on earth. this was the one we told you about formed in the wake of the violent earthquake in pakistan just over a week ago. the island is about 70 feet above sea level. it appeared if the ocean floor offshore. geologists say the islands are often formed by surging mud and

for anyone who has passed by a bookstore, say nothing of his millions of fans, tom clancy's name has always been synonymous with a good, gripping yarn. as authors go he was a master at his form. he was an iconoclast to be sure. he used his vast royalties to buy a tank and partial ownership stake in his beloved baltimore orioles. tom clancy died today at the age of 66. we have a look back today from nbc's mike taibbi. >> we sail into history. >> reporter: from sean connery and alec baldwin to james early jones, harrison ford and ben affleck, they are lead actors whose career highlights include roles in the movie versions of tom clancy novels. >> are you all right? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: clancy's yarns were always the real star. along with his uncanny knowledge
