place, for me, it escapes being, it's really hard. i lose sense of time. kid get into that when they're doing something that really comes from within them. >> unfortunately, jessica, as you know, in elementary age and a high schooler as well child, that oftentimes the attraction is to their devices, their phone, their ipads. so how do you get them away from the technology or if they are going to use it in a creative way as well? >> one of the things we do, we turn off the wireless in the house for big chunks of the day. >> that helps a lot. i also just kick them outside. i say, i'm sorry,boy. the other thing we do on the weekend that has been one of the best things we have done for our family, we have nap time, quiet time. the phone gets turned off the wireless gets turned off. for two hours on the afternoon on saturday and sunday, they have to find something to do and be quiet doing it. all kind of fun projects have come out of that.

>> that's the trail blazer. >> quickly with people that have multiple children, busy lives, jobs, they're scheduled from morning until night, is there a way of them finding this? can you do it in a smaller amount of times? >> it is really radically countercultural to do that. because it's choosing between the good and the good. so all these activities are wonderful. then the kids are, they do get adiblthed to the screen and to be able to carve out time for them to just as you said be able to learn you to hol rate boredom is so valuable to their future employers. that's why we have to have the long view. >> and their muscles. >> right. >> one thing i don't think we understand, really well, is that down time is an incredibly important part of learning, too. . >> i will go home right now. >> downtown time. >> thanks so much. we are back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc. [cheers and applause] michael: so? kelly: i have been so overglorified with this birthday. pretty soon there will be no living with me, i swear. michael: i almost gave out your cell phone number to people because i got tired of them telling me, tell kelly happy birthday michael. my mom, my cousins. y'all don't even wish me a happy birthday! kelly: that's so nice, everybody was really nice. i got spoiled, my kids spoiled me, everybody was so lovely on the street, people wishing me a happy birthday. i don't know why this year, it's as if they heard it was my last birthday ever. know but people were especially kind to me this year, i don't know why. michael: well, we will have many more. kelly: well, thank you, thank you. it was fun, it was really nice. michael: you had cake? kelly: we did, we ate a lot of cake last night. our friend neil patrick harris came over last night for dinner, which was nice. [cheers and applause] yes, yes! and you know, he's a magician, so he did magic tricks and i was like did you hire him to come here and do magic tricks? michael: really? that's right, he's so good that mark -- kelly: mark thought he was living in our house secretly. he did a magic trick in our house that was so elaborate and so extraordinary and so mystifying, this was thanksgiving a couple of years ago, and he did a magic trick that mark is still convinced that he had been living in our house for a week to make the magic trick happen. [laughter] and i'm like honey, you know that's not true, where would he have been that we wouldn't have seen him? he goes, i don't know, i don't

know how he gets in. michael: look under the bed before you go to sleep. kelly: he's in town for rehearsing for hedwig, which will be on broadway. he came over last night and said we're just going to have dinner, so he walked in and said where is everybody? i said this is it. and he goes, you're not having a party? i'm so embarrassed, i feel like i'm crashing a family dinner. you are family, come in, sit down, no party, just us, just you kids. [laughter] michael: but that's nice, you needed a little quiet time. a nice family. kelly: like i said, it was a busy sports day for us so we had track meets and wrestling meets and all sorts of stuff so i was glad to get in and get home and sit down and get to drinking.
