>> townhall meeting. why it is more than health care. >> first on fox tonight. summer fun turns frightening. what a young boy said happened to him at a baltimore swimming pool. >> and toys that could be dangerous to your children. the incident that prompted a nationwide recall. >> live in high definition, from wbff tv in baltimore, this is fox 45 news "late edition". >> hello again, i am jeff barnd. >> and i am jennifer gilbert. we begin tonight with breaking news out on of downtown baltimore. a car accident involving baltimore olympic champion michael phelps. >> keith daniels is live on the scene with more. keith, what can you tell us at this hour. >> jeff and jennifer, live at north calvert and east bittle. police clearing the scene now it was a two car collision. michael phelps and two passengers were traveling in a black cadillac escalade. a woman was driving the other car. the accident happened just before 9:00 tonight.

investigators say phelps was traveling east on bittle. the woman was driving north on calvert. the two vehicles collided. and now police are trying to determine exactly what happened. >> we know that there was a collision. two cars driving and collided at the intersection. we will find out if alcohol was a factor. look at red lights. put it altogether. we are literally talking to them as we speak. >> we are back here live. clearing michael's escalade otto truck, and other vehicle behind it. police are now telling us that alcohol was not a factor. phelps was not hurt. he has been questioned. and released. meantime, paramedics did take the woman to the hospital. as a plea caution. again, a collision here in downtown baltimore. involving michael phelps. a woman is hurt. michael phelps was not hurt. we're live in downtown baltimore. keith daniels, fox 45 news "late edition". .

>> first on fox tonight. 9-year-old claims he was bitten by a 17-year-old lifeguard at the aquatic center in west baltimore. shaun said it happened july 31, two weeks later the scarrings are still there. after getting nowhere with recreation and parks, his mother filed a report with the department of juvenile services. they told her the lifeguard was already on probation. they could only be forced to write the teenager a letter of apology. >> it is not very good thing to do to a 9-year-old because he is a little bit younger than you, and you are almost a full grown adult. >> a spokesperson from recreation and parks said fingerprints and backgrounds checks are done on all employees. but offense does not preclude from you working on the department. while the case is under investigation, the lifeguard is still working at the aquatic center. >> the 17-year-old accused of shooting a 5-year-old girl may

have been home at the time of the shooting. our crime and justice found that gps records indicate that lamont davis was complying with the law. individual yost incident shows the shooter may not be wearing a gps ang let. so what happens if a juvenile under gps monitoring is accused of committing a crime. >> if there is a crime. many times they come back to us and say, can you run the points for this particular area, and we can tell them if there have been youth or adults, you know, depending on the program, that have been in a particular area, and how long they were there. >> davis is accused of shooting a 5-year-old girl that is still in the hospital tonight. >> the white house is getting ready for another big push on health care reform. and president obama is taking his message weft. >> as we hear tonight. the mounting debt is making the task that much more difficult. >> the federal budget deficit is

soaring now and that is giving the president's critics more ammunition. >> i think that the obama administration has already started to restore trust in health care. >> that is a tough argument for members of congress to make. at least as some of the townhall meetings. and critics of the president's push for health care reform were handed new ammunition yesterday. with news that the budget deficit this year will quadruple to $1.84 trillion. >> you are not putting us and our children and grandchildren in debt. >> white house is blaming outside groups for what it calls misinformation. >> people want to keep the status quo. >> but those special interests cut both ways. >> well while the chamber of commerce has an ad questioning government health care, the aarp is running ads that derive critics for opposing reform. the president is now preparing to take his message west. to montana and colorado. last night in colorado at another townhall meeting on

health care, critics were ready to pile on. >> to quote, someone, i think some of the leaders have acted stupidly. >> now, the white house also had to acknowledge that the president misspoke at his own townhall meeting, when he said that the aarp backed the plan working the way through congress. at this point, they do not. >> in washington, doug lou sader. fox news. >> why are so many of the townhall meetings getting out of hand? even though they are designed to discuss health care reform many people are using them to vent anger about other issues. experts say they are drawing people that are proud to be americans but not proud of their government. >> i think what they are react to in part is, what is happening over the past year or so, watched while the government bailed out banks and other financial institutions, when they subsidize the industry with billons of dollars. and although many economists and newspaper columnists tell us this is bringing about an end to the recession, they have not

seen it yet. >> experts say it is too early to tell how this townhall anger will affect health care reform. >> we have more of yesterday's townhall meeting with senator cardin on our website. go to foxbaltimore.com and click on "raw news". >> the latest survey shows americans are more likely to be sympathetic to protestors views on health care reform. "usa today" gallop poll indicates thor percent say townhall meetings made them more sympathetic. 21 percent, less sympathetic to protestors views. and 36 percent say all the yelling has not made much of a difference. >> now that brings us to the question of the day. has the townhall protests made you more sympathetic with the protestors? 43 percent say more sympathetic. 36 percent say less. and 21 percent say they have made no difference whatsoever. >> well, you can make your voice heard. tell your elected officials what you think of the health care plan. get their phone numbers and e-mail addresses by going to our website foxbaltimore.com/ your voice.

>> and white house is creating a website where you can check the facts about this proposal. you can find a link to it on foxbaltimore.com. click on "news links". >> the h1n1 virus claims a life of another marylander. it is the 6th death in the state associated with swine flu. state health officials say the victim is an adult from dc suburbs. the person did have other medical conditions. officials expect more flu related deaths. and urge people to take advantage of seasonal and swine flu vaccinations when available. and in fact, the university of maryland school of medicine is taking part in the nationwide trial. of the swine flu vaccine. >> we already know that it is not sufficient for the entire population. so we are trying to really identify what are the most high-risk populations to be able to vaccinate right now. >> doctors are hoping to have the vaccine ready for the public by october. >> beautiful night for preseason football. >> yeah here is chief meteorologist vytas reid to tell us about the forecast. >> great football weather.

after a hot and muggy day. but things cooled down and showers left us. and left for a pretty night. scanning the skies, go to radar right now. no activity. clear conditions. few high thin clouds going back on the time here. we could see a few spotty showers south of dc. but all the activity is fizzling out as we go into overnight. bigger picture here. down south, closer showers over parts of central and eastern virginia, and north carolina. back to the northwest. looking at some clearing. so that's a good sign to come. as far as the temperatures are concerned. 76 degrees right now in baltimore. 76 in d.c. 77 in hagerstown. overnight drop to 72 degrees. patchy fog. so your morning commute drive carefully. 71 with sunshine. and then by the afternoon, looking at temperatures at 75 degrees. partly cloudy. 20 percent chance for a shower. closer look at the weekend outlook coming up in a few moments. >> these little plastic toys are a danger to your child. what happened to one baby that prompted a nationwide recall.

roles after an incident near a courthouse in la plata. robert mali admits he let the air out of a tire on a parked automobile in front of the courthouse monday. judge said someone was parking in a restricted zone and he left notes for the driver. the driver of the car said she never received the notes. nor any warning whatsoever. >> the only warning that i got was that my tire was flat. one of the security guards said to me he said jean, someone from holding called over and said judge nelly flattened your tire. >> the judge said deflating the tires was less of a hassle than having the car ticketed or towed. >> police chase ends in an explosion. man suspected of stealing a pickup truck takes police on a chase and darting through rejection crashed into a mini van. and then the truck sideswiped a third vehicle and explodes after slamming into a utility pole. the pickup truck as you can see goes up in flames. it happened in front of a restaurant on detroit's

westside. the suspected truck thief died. >> wow! well it seems to be cooling off. finally. what's going to be happening in the weekend? vytas, will it be cooler, wetter, warmer? >> actually sunshine out there. but temperatures will warm up a bit as we get through the weekend. right now outside, relatively quiet conditions as the folks are coming home from the game downtown. busy downtown streets. and you see on the inner harbour, temperatures 74 degrees. partly cloudy to clear skies. winds out of the east at eight. humidity levels at 87 percent. and it looks like we will continue to see pressurizeing as high pressure builds in from the northwest. northwest regional temperatures right now. not feeling too bad at 72 in harrisburg. 73 in richmond. 76 downtown baltimore. looking at 72 degrees in new york city. and we will continue to see clearing conditions building in from the northwest as high pressure builds in from the stationary front moving through the area over the last couple of days. creating the instability in the atmosphere to create the showers and thunderstorms we see

off-and-on. still have 20 percent chance for a pop-up shower with daily heating. but, i think, for the most part see more sunshine than a chance for rain. few showers that worked the way down south of baltimore. as we headed into the evening hours. glad to see that disappear as the game progressed into the evening hours. looks like continuing clearing conditions as the future scan shows. we will continue to see breaks in the clouds as we get down the road. as dryer air builds in from the northwest. few showers south of us. as we continue to see unsettled weather south of fredericksberg and also down toward richmond going through the next day or so. high pressure will continue to build in. this front continues to retract south. heading to the south. taking the moisture with it. see dryer conditions building in from the great lakes. feels good for the next couple of days. and things start to heat up as we have a clockwise rotation of hot air around pressure. bringing us a flow of air. and increase in temperatures saturday, and sunday. tomorrow, 85 degrees. wind out of the east at five and with sun and clouds.

. >> get this. some firefighters were really feeling the burn after taking part in a belly flop contest. a panel of judges rated some of colorado's bravest on flips and flops. and eric from the denver area west metro department took top honors for his splash. won a trip for two to mexico. >>have you heard about the bear that walks into a fur shop. it was no joke when it happened in downtown aspen colorado. the shop employeeed the bear walked to the back of the store and checked out a mink coat. >> seemed to know where he was going. as any good shopper would know.

>> the bear was startled by a man taking pictures and ran through the store window before taking off. a store employee said it is possible the am which your photographer lured the bear into the store. >> check out this graduation ceremony. for pinguins. >> during the annual march of the pinguins these little guys waddled from fish school at the san francisco zoo to the big kids penguin colony. they needed helping hands to make it to penguin island but they eventually made it. patrice harris fox 45 news "late edition". . >> after three weeks of early practices, the ravens took to the field tonight to face the washington redskins and first game of the year. we have a glimpse at many of the new team members. as this is the time to fight for a spot on the team. and some of them definitely stepped up to the plate. first quarter.

first raven possession joe flacco drops back and finds ray rice over the middle. watch this little guy turn on the jets. rice picked up 35 yards. and a big ravens' first down inside the red zone. later in the drive. mcgahee picks up 3 yards. and watch michael or on the right side of the screen. he pancakeed the defender. michael or loses the helmet and gets up and reveals a nasty gash. blood runs down the face. he leaves the game to get stitched up. but he did return. the ravens settled for a field goal to lead it. and later in the first. joe flacco throws a quick slant to kelly washington. he picks up 16 yards and washington, he is pumped up. two big catches. both for first down for washington. later in the drive. now on the second quarter. mcgahee gets the carry. and watch the cutback by mcgahee. scam percent for 16 yards. and another first down. ravens got another steve hour ca field goal to lead it six-zero.

late second quarter. redskins driving. collins finds davis over the middle. and tom strips the ball out. and edwards makes the recovery for the ravens. and first turnover goes baltimore's way. 11 seconds left in the half. smith out of the shotgun. fake shots. and 19-yard touchdown. ravens run the two minute drill to perfection. and led it at half. coach john harbaugh loves the way the first half ended. >> no doubt about it two guys that did it, in the situation that was a pressure situation. we work on that all the time. call it end of the house situation. try to get a touchdown but not cause the field goal. for troy to do that two minute drive was impressive. and harper to come back after two earlier disappointments and make the play g to see. >> second half highlights. ravens up. and beck gets hit as he throws it. almost picked off. and instead foster makes the catch and he is off to the races.
