residents to explain new safety measures along route 32. >> it is a deadly stretch of road where four people have been killed in four months. and karen parks is live along route 32 in howard county with the latest tonight. karen? >> well, jennifer and jeff, improvements started yesterday. and in light of the recent killings, officials say there is more to come. here along route 32, drivers say cars often speed, two lanes turn to one, and there are sudden left turning vehicles. weighing wagner was killed driving along route 32. 15 days later, a mother and her 13-year-old son were also killed along this 4-mile stretch of road. and just last week, 49-year-old dr. brian emory rear ended and forced into the southbound lanes, then hit by a pickup truck. >> what we are trying to do is implement both short-term and more intermediate term measures that were both slowing down traffic ask increase drivers

awareness of left turning vehicles. >> they have done more this week than what they have done in 40 years. out on 32. and i tell you why. because dr. emory was killed last week. >> state highway administrators say they hope to widen route 32. within the next few years. reporting live in howard county. karen parks fox 45 news "late edition". >> it was like three loud booms. one boom, two booms, third boom. >> a police chase damages several homes in reservoir hill. this is the 1100 block of whitelock street when things ended. officers pursued a stolen car and made a lot of arrests but one car lost control and destroyed stares on three homes. police say no one has contacted them about any property damage. >> and elderly man dies in a house fire. flames ripped through the west baltimore home before 5:00 this morning. megan gilliland tells us residents have lost more than a neighbor. >> on the 2000 block of

smallwood street. >> teary-eyed neighbors watch as firefighters put out the hot spot in the neighbor's home. >> i don't want to believe it. >> the fire ripped through before 5:00 this morning. with smoke pouring from the windows. firefighters rushed in. >> we found the body of the elderly gentleman inside expired. >> firefighters on the scene would not release the identity of the man. but neighbors say everyone knew who he was. >> you knew who mr. james was. even in the wintertime, cold, rain, snow, sleet, hail, you saw him out. he looked out for everybody. >> known as mr. james. mr. bug to others. he will no doubt be remembered for what he has done for this community. >> just a nice guy. i mean he took care of a lot of children in the neighborhood f they needed anything, he would provide it. >> keep the neighborhood clean.

>> fire investigators say it doesn't appear his home had smoke detectors. no word on a cause. megan gilliland, fox 45 news. >> and this is the 21st fatal fire so far this year in baltimore. last year there were 19 total. >> a man is shot dead in northeast baltimore. it occurred around 8:30 last night in the 3400 block of cliff mont avenue. man pronounced dead at the scene. investigators have not released his name. >> so how can this man not be charged. when we already have police, in here campus patrol there to protect and serve. let them stay inside and they can handle the outside. >> new details in the death of a man killed by a johns hopkins student. john pontolillo used a samaurai sword to kill rice. rice was hiding 93 garage behind his home. tonight police are saying rice was hiding between the porch and garage. still.

>> we believe that he was acting in self defense. but, you know, the case is still open. and you know, this is where we are at this stage in the game. >> rice's loved ones strongly disagree tonight. the fatal confrontation happened tuesday morning. >> a howard county grand jury indicted a jessup man on attempted first-degree murder charges. relating to his escape from police custody. last month, 20-year-old devon champagne found guilty of felony theft. when being transported to a detention center he tried to strangle a sheriff's deputy and escaped. he evadeed police for a week before caught near richmond virginia. >> president obama brought his health care message to the university of maryland earlier today. 17,000 people, mostly students, listened in as the president laid out his proposals. the president called health care the defining struggle of this generation. >> i have heard a lot of republicans say they want to kill obama care. some may even raise money off of

shows no rain. zoom out. around the belt line. no activity. high thin clouds thickening up over the region and we will continue to see shower activity pushed off to the east and we will be done with the rain through the overnight. looks like the winds are starting to shift a bit out of the south. you can kinds of spin around there. and temperatures will warm into tomorrow. but we still have to worry about a little bit of coastal flooding, coastal flood advisory on the western edge of the chesapeake. the winds creating a 1 foot level above the normal tied. so folks overnight tonight be aware of that if you live along the waterways. sun breaks out through the morning hours into the afternoon. temperatures in the mid 70s. working into the upper 70s. will they stick around for the weekend? i will have that look in the seven day coming up. >> thanks, vytas. >> maryland's financial outlook is bleak. from annapolis today where state revenue is down $700 million. state officials now predict maryland's deficit could top $2 billion next year. >> we have got all sorts of

foreclosures, unemployment continues to rise. we're not anywhere near headed into recovery. >> franchot adds another $300 million will have to be cut to make ends meet. >> city officials have approved spending $17,000 in federal stimulus money on food, tents and chairs at a festival. the event is designed to promote good health for pregnant women. in 2007, 112 babies died before their first birthday. which health experts say could have been prevented. but city hall is fielding heavy criticism for the expense. >> as if one, you know, one event is going to change people's eating habits, that's a joke. >> you have to start somewhere. and doing events like this is a place where the city can start. >> well, the festival is slated for september 26 at clifton park. and that brings us to the question of the day. should the city spend $17,000 in stimulus money to pay for that

. >> a person of interest becomes now a suspect. raymond clark is charged with the murder of annie le. the yale graduate student found dead sunday. rick leventhal is in connecticut with the story. >> raymond clark the third did not say much during the arraignment and did not enter a plea. >> i read you your rights downstairs earlier in the presence of your attorney, and you understood them? >> they arrested clark in this hotel in cromwell connecticut where he was staying. detained earlier in the week so investigators could collect dna and released after giving them. >> but police never let him out of their sight and took him into custody thursday morning without a struggle. >> police are calling the murder a case of workplace violence but not giving more details about a possible motive. >> annie le was a young woman with unlimited potential. the loss will be deeply felt by family, friends, and the community. >> lee's body found stuffed in the ball of the research lab in the building where she and clark

worked. investigators searched the lab and later clark's apartment comparing dna with evidence found at the crime scene. >> we will do what is necessary to bring this case to an appropriate conclusion. that is our obligation and our commitment to annie le and to her family. >> the president of yale university said nothing in clark's employment history indicated he was capable of such a horrible crime. >> what happened here, could have been happened anywhere. it says more about the dark side of the human soul than it does about anything else. >> le was supposed to be married this past sunday. her fiance's family released a statement thanking everyone that helped with the preparations for what they call a wedding that was not to be. in new haven connecticut, rick leventhal fox 45 news. >> autopsy shows le was strangled. clark's next court date is october 6. >> washington lawmakers taking a

stand against acorn. this after a fifth video surfaces exposing the community activist group. the house voted today to deny all federal funding for acorn. the latest hidden camera interview was done in san diego. the filmmakers posing as a pimp and prostitute tell a male acorn worker they are looking to open a brothel and bring in girls from el salvador to work for them. and the employee we just learned has been fired. told them he has contacts that are good at smuggling immigrants across the border. >> few individuals at acorn did what, i think is -- what would be the appropriate word? someone said despicable. >> acorn is looking into the incidents and said only a few of the employees did anything objectionable. >> chilly day today. >> here comes the sun. vytas reid said it is all right. >> it is all right.

man. that's right. here is what's going on. we have nicer conditions coming our way for the weekend. see sunshine finally out there. we have been plagued with the clouds. cooler temperatures. but looks like the clouds start to breakup. we have some clouds scattered across the area right now sitting at 63. winds out of the south-southeast. starting to see the change of a southerly flow. that means temperatures will slowly increase. humidity levels at 81 percent. now, we saw the showers just off to the west and south of the most of the activity around the state has pretty much broken up and actually clearing north of us. temperatures still on the cool side. north at 60. and harrisburg. 61 in -- here we go. 61 in new york city. looking at 64 in richmond. 62 in pittsburg. and we will continue to see the temperatures shifting a bit. over the next couple of days. so a little increase and decrease as we get into the weekend. hd radar shows a few breaks in the clouds. and few heavier clouds south of us over dc. wedge will push through. and then continue to see the breaks through the day tomorrow.

here is how it plans out in the future scan. see how the clouds are thick through the overnight. by tomorrow morning, few breaks in the clouds. and then a pop-up shower in west virginia potentially but here, staying dry and continue to see the clouds break, especially into saturday. and then as we get into sunday. see more clearing as we see high pressure moving in. and the high pressure is going to continue to move in ahead of a cold front. so we will see the breaks in the clouds through tomorrow. high pressure keeps moisture to the south. and see the breaks for friday, and then into saturday. the front will push through. dropping the temperatures from the upper 70s to lower 70s as the cooler air follows the cold front down out of the great lakes. so here is what it looks like for tomorrow. we will see clouds breaking through the morning. and then through the mid-morning and afternoon. more sunshine. and temperatures right around 76 degrees. pleasant day downtown. with a southwest wind of five to 10. five-day forecast shows the temperatures cooler after the front pushes through of the hold onto sunshine for saturday. looking at 72. beautiful day. 74 on sunday. and with mostly sunny skies.
