5:01 am
of people did a lot of shoveling 90 minutes ago. on the highways they were down to the pavement, now they are getting another light dusting of snow at this point but the snow is not over yet. good morning, it's wednesday, february 10th. this is a special extended edition of fox 45. i'm jennifer. >> and i'm jeff barns. >> i insist we do a show when it's 70 degrees outside. >> i'm going to have an aversion when i see you if it's always in snow. >> no problem. we have several school closings to tell you about this morning but you could have guessed it. it's going to be divided in 2 schools. allegheny, baltimore, caroline, carroll, see cell, charles, dorchester and harford county. kent county, queen ann,
5:02 am
talbot, wacomico and worcester county schools all closed. list number two county public schools that will be closed through friday. anne arundel county schools, baltimore county schools,. prince george county schools all closed and again those are schools that just said, you know what we're not even going to try it this week. those will be closed all week. just remember whenever severe weather hits tune in to fox 45 morning news. our morning news ticker will have all of the latest traffic he delays andelays and traffic . our tricker updates automatically and even runs during commercial breaks which is very convenient. we start with meteorologist steve fertig who is tracking the storm in the sky watch weather center. steve, hello. hello again. you're going to have to wait for the 80-degree day for a while. one thing interesting about this
5:03 am
storm is we're going to stronger winds this time around than the big one over the weekend. that will be the difference with lesser snow totals but heavier drifts because of the storm wind. we have the sleet mixing into the central counties indicated by the pink that, is going to help to keep the totals down especially in salisbury where they have plain rain. we have a set up similar to the one we had before, the low pressure center feeding the he low, this coastal will strengthen and blowup outside of new jersey and long island where they will get heavy snow but we still have to have this low to move through here. it will bring us more snow spilling into some places that are seeing sleet. continuing to move east and also the bluthe green area replaced e blue. the dark areas that means there's heavy snow possible. it won't be out of here until later tonight. even then we will have blowing of the snow. it's going to cause drifting,
5:04 am
white outs, reduced visibility and blizzard concerns. an update on what is happening with regard to the warnings here is meteorologist jessica starr. we're still under the winter storm warning until 10:00 a.m. this morning but that will actually expire, because those winds is going to be the main concern. those winds are going to pick up and look at this. we have a 10:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. tonight, we have a blizzard warning that will go into effect and look at that all along the new jersey coastline, the northern tier of del mall va peninsula, because the main concern is going to be blowing snow and reduced visibility. we will get you the snow totals coming up in just a minute. back to you guys. breaking news report out of dundalk this morning. >> a two-alarm fire broke out at a fire station in dundalk.
5:05 am
it happened at station six at the 2800 block of solar point, part of the building collapsed. a fire spokesman is still on the way to the scene, but he says he believes a new $500,000 truck was destroyed. by a car trying to stop two armed robbery suspects in towson. it started at 2:00 this morning in the 500 block of york road. two suspects robbed a cvs store and got in a car and started on dulaney valley road. they tried to run a police officer down. the officer was alert when he was rushed to the hospital, both suspects were arrested. our neighbors in rogers forge were just getting dug out from the weekend storm. >> and they were doing a good job, too, but today they are waking up to another round of it. how are the conditions so far, megan gilliland joins us at rogers forge. that is pretty familiar territory to you, megan at this
5:06 am
point. >> reporter: we have been here all weekend long and we have seen this neighborhood clean up after the storm. this is was a sidewalk that they had scraped off and made manageable. now overnight we are looking at 4 inches or so over the top of the sidewalk if we can get to it. therthere it is. but a lot of snow overnight. since we saw the snow overnight and we saw freezing rain. we saw it crunchy and it's a layer of ice, new snow that has fallen overnight. you can imagine what that has done to the roadways. still looking at all of the old snow that we had before that you have to get through and trudge through to get to the roads. once you get on to the road, look much better than we have seen before. although these look clearer and although they have been plowed, it's slick out here. freezing rain we saw in the last hour or so, has made things
5:07 am
slick here. as we drove into rogers forge, we could feel our car sliding here and there. although conditions may look better, you may not see as much snow on the road, dealing with better conditions on the road. now we have the snow piling on. these cars were clear hours ago before we went to bed these cars didn't have any snow on them. we are seeing the snow starting to pile on here. and it's really coming down. i heard jeff talk about the wind and we are feeling that now, hopefully that won't get stronger. we will keep an eye on things right here and toss it back to you. it's supposed to pick up. the sweek weekend snow dumpo feet of snow. for days, the residents are concerned about parking on the streets. >> how do the streets look this morning, joel d smith live at metfield in north baltimore, with a look at that situation.
5:08 am
>> reporter: guys, this is one of those roads that we have been to a lot. we have seen the progress, we are here today, and the roads look better than we have seen in the past. the thing is more is coming down, more of a sleet kind of a mix right now. let me show you right here, this is fresh snow and sort of a glazy layer of rain that turned into ice. now we have this sort of sweet mix falling right now as things have changed over a little bit. the street itself, it looks like it has for a couple of weeks -- sorry a couple of days, it feels like weeks. this vote has not been touched at all. over here you can see how deep that is. that is atop of what that was already there so that street hasn't been touched. and these cars were dug out. these were easily seen vehicles. now they are covered by the new layer, 5 or 6 inches of snow on top of everything else. we are over here without too many problems. we can see pavements on falls
5:09 am
road, and slushy areas right there. they got a good start for a little bit more than what happened so far. not too bad on the secondary roads. in the neighborhoods another dig out. there's been snow pushed on top of these areas that you have to dig out again. in general not too bad out here right now all things considered. another thing doubt dig out bute road itself not as bad as it has been in the last few days. >> i guess that is the good news, not worse than it has been. >> as the day progresses, that is when the concerns start. absolutely. we have crews all across the region covering the storm. but he we also have you, our viewers and facebook fans have done great at sending us pictures smirks sa. >> i saw this one last night at 10:00. look at the picture of malia who has been here for one winter and already she has seen three
5:10 am
blizzards. >> she knows how to bundle up. >> go to the foxbaltimore.com and click on the see it, shoot it, send it icon and you can send photos at pics at foxbaltimore.com. what do the roads look like in your neighborhood. >> sound off at our facebook page at foxbaltimore.com facebook, or send us a tweet. >>go ahead one more time. >> send us a tweet. crews finished clearing highs after saturday's snowstorm. where they will put all of the new storm. that is interesting.
5:11 am
5:12 am
>>state how crews had managed to get the major highways down to pavement after the weekend snowstorm but yesterday a. >>system moved in dropping even more snow. and now the question becomes for crews trying to clear the roads again, where does the new snow go. kelly from the admnistration
5:13 am
joining us with more. >> good morning. >> how are you doing. >> i'm doing well. much better than you are, you are extremely busy today. what is the plan of attack given the snow and given the fact that the wind conditions are going to pick up later today. >> that's a huge concern for you sh crews. we spent the majority of the day restocking salt for our trucks. our crews were able to get a nap where they could as they continued to salt and pushing as much salt cover as they could off the road. with the day with the precipitation beginning to fall in the baltimore area, of course we want the residents to stay home and continue to plow throughout the rest of the day. >> as you plow the roads, where do you put the snow because the roads are piled high with the previous snow? >> in some intanse stances inste couldn't push it, we hauled some of it. and we had a chance for it to
5:14 am
melt. our major concern is to get as much as we can off of the highway system. it will be an ongoing operation throughout the course of the day and tonight if you have to head out, be aware of lane drops in some areas and keep an eye out for our crews. >> kelly, with the highway admnistration, thank you so much. let's go back to our meteorologist, our team of meteorologist, tag team weather is what we're calling it here this morning. that is what is going to be going on for the next 8 to 16 hours. because right now it doesn't seem so bad and i know that this is just the beginning. there's a little bit of a lull, a little bit of a dry spot meaning dry air is moving in, it gave us a break and more snow is about to move in. we zoom in for you. as you can see a lot of white on the map indicating snow. this storm has been huge, it has been from chicago, detroit, cleveland, it has come our way, and going up to philadelphia, new york and boston.
5:15 am
we knew we would get a lot but as can see there's a little pink on our map. meanwhile the i-corridor and up to dc, and the heaviest area we have seen. jeff will give us more information on the totals. you can see that we still have more snow to come. we had earlier banding of sleet moving through, in fact around loch raven road to the east earlier, now filled in with just plain snow, as you can see, white all over the map. theres was a line between the pink as you can see around easton indicating the sleet. a lot of this area filling in where we earlier had sleet, now it turns out to be the snow moving in. we put things into motion as it moves from west to north to east. more snow is on the way, the dry air being replaced by the moisture and the snow. we have the set up that we had earlier we were talking about with the low pressure center off in the ohio valley, feeding the low. watch as this snow strengthens
5:16 am
when it moves north. we have plenty of snow you can see it here indicated by the blue. as the low pressure center continues to move off the coast and the darkening of the blue an indication of the strengthening heading toward long island. we get on the backside of it snow and strong winds. notice the lines of equal pressure and high pressure building in. we are going to get high pressure to build in, the low pressure moving out the result is a strong pressure gradient. we are concerned about the drifting snow and the heavy snow fall that could lead to any intinction. intinction. combination. some very difficult situation out there. we are still going to look at probably an excess of a foot of snow, again, jessica is going to get us caught up. we are keeping an eye on this storm. we have a low pressure center that is going to move our way on sunday into monday. that's a clipper system. it shouldn't bring us as much snow as that moves as can you see from the west to the east. and another system down here, the gulf coast, that one is
5:17 am
going to stay to our south and stay out of our way. that wasn't won't bother us. we will look at additional snow on sunday into monday, not much and we will get to the details. we will see as far as the watches and warnings, where they are now and updates and the snow fall totals. jessica starr is in the sky watch weather center where more. >> reporter: thanks, steve. we're going to be continuing with the watches and the warnings, for right now the winds, because that is going to be the main concern. we're still going to get snow accumulation later today, but the winds are going to start to pick up later today out of the northeast at 6 miles an hour. get ready for strong blustery winds, they're not gusting yet, but out of oakland, they're at 30 miles per hour. look at this the temperatures at 31 degrees at north baltimore. we had warming to allow for sleet and mixing rain so the top layer of that ice right now is crusty out there. 14 is the current temperature in oakland. temperatures are going to hover
5:18 am
right around the 30-degree mark. we're not he going to climb at all too much but look at the watches and warnings all across the state of michigan and the ohio valley and look at that. where you see the area of red, let's zoom on down and see that a little bit. we saw that winter storm warning. this is still in effect until 10:00 a.m. this morning. that expires at 10:00 a.m. because then a blizzard warning goes to effect until 7:00 p.m. tonight for most of maryland pretty much the northern tier of maryland and then toward the northern portions of the del mar peninsula and along the new jersey coastline, because the winds will have blowing snow. we will still see about another 8-10 inches of snow, but what exactly is a blizzard. we have limited visibility, 1/4 of a mile or less, and winds which we will peak and it will last for three hours or longer. here we go. we did have four itche 4-inchesd
5:19 am
yesterday at the thurgood marshal airport and we're going to get a second round from the low pressure system that steve was talking. we could see 12 to 18 more inches today ask down t and dowe south 14 or 18 inches. this has been the snowiest snow fall since 95 and 96. we are going to continue to add to that later today. we will have an in-depth look at the system coming up in a few minutes. what a proud moment for all of here. >> now that we have blea beatene record we should stop. coming up the roads are extremely slick in a lot of places. just how bad it is in baltimore city. >> reporter: and i'm candace dold live in howard county. it's round two of this mess and the snow plows are already out.
5:20 am
5:21 am
you're taking a live look at the highways out there. cars out, i don't know if these are plows or people who are brave enough to get up and out on the roads at this time in the morning. >> it looks like cars. the roads are very well plowed but the temperatures are such that you can see the glistening from the cars and the that is a concern because ice is forming and snow drifts because of the
5:22 am
wind gusts. it could provide for a dangerous situation on all highways in this area. >> howard county residents are already dealing with the record 30 plus inches of snow from the storm that came over the weekend. >> it took sometime to dig out from that, of course, as we all know. how are they coping with this fresh round of snow? can dallas dold is live from ellicott city. candace, hello, again. >> reporter: hello again, the 1-2, punch and here we are. it's the wintery mix coming down, i can hear it smacking against my jacket. road conditions we're at a shell station right here. we're looking at the actual conditions. you can tell it's a crunchy, clushy kind ocrunchy, clushy ki. we wanted to know what it looks like out there so we caught one of the plow drivers, hi, rafael. you came to the gas station and
5:23 am
what did you find. >> absolutely nothing and it's going to be a challenge for the fuel. >> reporter: absolutely and we're talking about the diesel fuel is what we're talking about? >> i was at a station yesterday and they're out of all fuel. >> i cannot believe that, but that's going to be a huge problem not just drivers but for the all-important plow drivers like yourself. what are you finding out there? >> right now the roads are horrible. if you can stay home, stay home, you won't get anywhere, it's not worth your efforts. >> you do not want to be overconfident in this mess because it does continue to come down. compare it to the last weekend, what is the difference that you're seeing with the wintery mix right now? >> the difference is going to be huge. the roads are semicleared. in this particular case with the new snow coming, there will be absolutely nowhere to go on the shoulder. if you do get stuck, you're going to be in serious trouble. >> reporter: thanks, rafael, we understand that time is
5:24 am
precious for you. unfortunately it seems it's going to dee deteriorate rapidly from here. >> we were talking to joel d smith, and you noticed the gas pump. >> i have been to a few gas stations to get try to get gas and they haven't. >> that could be another reason that cars get stranded out there. that may be the reason i get stranded. >> everybody will follow you here from home. >> rafael will come and help
5:25 am
5:26 am

5:27 am
ice to snow. keep the comments coming. >> we had a comment with alicia, i've been stuck at john hopkins with my week old, with no transit. side roads, and side roads. that has been the major complaint of city residents trying to dig out from the weekend storm. >> road workers have been working to make the roads passable but a fresh round of snow is not making things passable. adrian is joining us from the department of transportation. >> good morning, jeff and good morning patrice. >> what are you doing today, you cannot get a break. >> we have been at it since friday since 6:00, and you know that. we have been working on the second roadways, and then we moved into the primaries once the snow started accumulating on those roadways and will continue on the pr primaries, and we will
