welcome back to fox 45 early edition. 5:29 is the time. i'm patrice harris. let's get a check of the our forecast today. i think you're going to like it. meteorologist steve fertig is says you're going to like it and we believe you. >> the only thing you may not like is that you're going to be working on this beautiful day and you're going to be outside. it's one of those days that you will feel the outdoors calling you. >> a nice long lunch break. >> the temperatures climb into the low 80s for the high. we start cool at the bus stop, 55 degrees, but clear skies. a west wind at 5 miles an hour, fearly calm in most locations. as we look at. hahd radar, not much out there. we look at the rain across the great lakes and some of that might skirt across part of the state later. and we are not expecting much of that at all. we are looking at seeing thunderstorms in the forecast shortly. 57 at noon, and topping at 82,

and clear skies through the day. it should be a nice day indeed. we want to see if the commute is going to be as nice. candace dold has the answer and she has the traffic edge as well, candace. >> reporter: thank you, steve. it will be an enjoyable ride. we're talking about the beltway at liberty road and the cars are cruising both the inner and outer loop lanes. the outer loop, the same deal from 795 toward 95. we are in the green with an 11-minute ride at 55 miles per hour. the same speed traveling through baltimore on 95, from the fort mchenry tunnel, toward the beltway, in the green, 8 minutes there. and only a 5-mile trip, taking it from the harbor tunnel toward 95. and that's a look at your morning travels. patrice, back over to you. first it was the hair salon

bills. now city taxpayers are also footing the bills for former mayor sheila dixon's makeup, thousands of dollars worth. it's a story you are seeing first on fox. megan gilliland is live in baltimore where the administration is just hearing about the bills. what do they have to say about it, megan. >> reporter: the current administration has not commented about it just yet. we are talking about $11,000 worth of makeup bills that the mayor sheila dixon submitted during her term. bills that were paid to a company at owings mills with the cost of someone applying her make included in that. the minimum service ran 3 b $35r visit. this is atop of the salon costs that surfaced last month. all of the bills were paid by the mayor's office. >> we heard of john edwards $400 hair cut and makeup for

alarm blaze. the person who was burned was taken to the bay view burn center. so far there's no word on a cause. baltimore police are investigating after a pedestrian is hit and by a vehicle in essex. it happened at the 400 block of eastern boulevard. police have not said whether the driver stayed at the scene. police release more details about the death of yeardley love, a notre dame prep graduate who was attending the university of virginia. love's ex-boyfriend, george huguely is charged with her murder, but he says it was an accident. love was found by her roommate. she was in a pool of blood on her bed. she had bruises and scrapes on her face. huguely admitted that his and love relationship ended. he shook her causing her head to repeatedly hit the wall. >> no matter how many times you see that, it's an undescribable

feeling of sadness. >> we're confident that miss love's death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome. >> a bail review hearing for huguely is set for june 10th. he and love were scheduled to graduate later this month. instead huguely is withdrawing from the university. the death of i can't recallli can'tmurder of yeardle. five years ago they lost their 21 years old daughter to dating violence. she was killed by an exgirlfriend. the mitchell's say every time they hear about a case like this, it opens emotional wounds. >>the truth of the matter is the wounds are always open from our standpoint and this just makes those early days -- something like this just makes the early days come right to now. >> the mitchell's started a

foundation named after their daughter. through kristen's crusade they try to spread the word of early warning signs of datel date vio. nissan recalls cars. it says there's a problem that could disrupt signals being sent to the airbag which would then cause them not to deploy in an accident. no injuries have been reported but for more information contact a nissan dealer or wall 1-800 1-800-662-6200. if you live, work or play in baltimore county, officials are working on a project that will eventually make it easier for you to get around. the county will use funding from the american recovery and reinvestment act to resurface several local roadways. jim smith is scheduled to make the announcement in hunt valley at 11:00 this morning.

a nearly 2-mile stretch of mccormick road will be the first to be resurfaced. the project will take nearly two years to complete. high paying positions and we're not talking about corporate ceo's. >> both wages and benefits are frankly completely out of control. how much government workers make. and definitely a cooler start this morning even though it's 63 degrees in baltimore. check out the surrounding area and you will see. we are in the 50s.

5:39 on fox 45 early edition. a beautiful day is in store. otherwise meteorologist steve fertig is here with those details. good morning, steve. good morning, patrice. it will be a nice day today with a lot of sunshine and low humidity. it's going to be a nice day to get outside. high pressure is sitting over us and it's going to bring us all of that sunshine. you will see where there's a little bit of rain up in the great lakes, and the western great lakes with the frontal

boundary that appears to the north. by tomorrow that could be moving in our general vicinity, but as it does move in our direction, we will take a look toward the northeast. anybody that gets shower activity here will be in the northern part of the state and light as it moves through rather quickly. let's take a look then at your current conditions and enjoy this. 63 degrees at the inner harbor where it's warmer than other places. it's a cooler morning in most places, cool but nice clear skies out there. winds are calm, and 29.96 rising on the barometer. dew point is at 47, that is an indication that it's pretty dry. 62 in washington d.c., what about salisbury, cooler, 55 degrees as is the case in hagerstown, 58 surrounding the areas in the mid-to upper 50s this morning. high pressure sliding just over us and through the east will bring more of a southerly flow. on the backside, we will get the warm air to persist. meanwhile the showers to the north and west, will stay there for now. we will see of it coming our way

for now. but as you watch the model, you will see it steering mostly to the north and east and out of our way. do we get anything, maybe a light shower as i said tomorrow in the afternoon. generally high pressure is going to keep things looking pretty good around here. the next frontal boundary comes on friday night into your saturday. to could be bringing shiewrs shr late friday afternoon. it still looks to be the case. looking good, lots of sunshine, very comfortable southeast winds at 5-10 miles per hour. the southern part of the state 82 degrees for the high. south wind at 5-15 miles per hour with plenty of sunshine. keep in mind the average high temperatures this time of year 71 degrees. they still remain well above that. back to the west, 83 degrees with a lot of sun. southwest wind at 5-15 miles per hour. tonight we will see the range of breezy conditions. 61 degrees milder overnight for the low because that will be more so for the outlying areas as well as downtown as opposed

morning as you head out. here is candace dold with the traffic edge. good morning, candace. >> reporter: . >> reporter: good morning, steve. there's not much happening out there on the main lines. we are checking 61 miles per our on the jfx and at 54 miles per hour on the beltway traveling through pikesville. as for the west side at 59, right near security boulevard and 58 traveling through the catonsville region. let's talk about what is happening in baltimore, though, there's fire activity, crews remain on the scene. we can show you exactly what the area looks like. here you can see a lot of crews. it has been commanding attention throughout the morning. it continues to shutdown bitle street at maryland avenue and martin luther king boulevard at bitle street. you will want to use maryland avenue at an alternate route. on 95 approaching the downtown region moving through the fort mchenry tunnel this morning, you can see a tranquil ride coming from the plaza and on the northbound lanes toward the

the private sector. jennifer gilbert examines why some people say it's time to close the pay gap. >> it's a very important economic issue. >> reporter: pay cuts furloughs and even layoffs are everywhere, but for the a select group the pay raises continue and so do their generous benefits. >> i was frankly as opportunity toed to learn hoopportunityto -w much federal benefits have been rising in recent years. >> reporter: he is the tax studies at the cato commute, a conservative think tank. and he is looking at the rising costs of employee compensation. >> with the federal government, both wages and benefits frankly are completely out of control. >> we believe in working families doing better than the generation before them. and they don't believe in that. >> reporter: private sector employees on average receive $50,000 in compensation

during 2008, plus $9,800 in benefits. public sector employees earned more than $67,000, plus an additional $15,000 in benefits. that means on average, a public employee is compensated nearly $8,000 more than someone doing the same job in the private sector. >> they have large budget deficits and controlling the costs and public sector compensation is a a one way to find reform. >> reporter: and government numbers show that the same job pays more in the private sector. for example, a secretary working for the federal government made $10,000 more than a secretary working in the private sector. hedwards says unions and their aggressive bargaining tactics are to blame for the pay gam. gap. >> we don't need unions in the public sector. you get more efficient

governments working like in virginia if you don't have union. public employees are underpaid. >> reporter: patrick moran doesn't give much credence to cato's report on compensation. >> they have an interest seeing big banks, big business move forward here at the expense of working people. >> reporter: he provide aid report of his own from the national institute on retirement security. that report found wages and salaries of state and local employees are actually lower than those for private sector workers with a comparable education. >> but the fact of the matter is that state employees, public employees, have comparable wage brackets in comparable job brackets make less than the people in the public sector. >> what is interesting is 20 years ago working for the public service and the government was considered to be a sacrifice and to have a job in the private sector was considered to be something with a future. now because of government

affecting our economy, the whole thing is flip flopped. >> reporter: one of the state's top earn certifies james whit-- earner is james white. this year he will make more than $250,000, but he is not alone. a review of the state records shows during fiscal year 2010, 8 stat872 state employees made moe than $72,000 a year. that number is down from 2009 when, 954 state employees made six figures. keep in mind, those numbers don't include the cost of benefits which in $2 million was $25,000 per employee. >> we were living in the era of big government. we were living in the era of irresponsible spending and part of that spending were automatic increases that added up. >> state and local taxpayers will face higher sales and property taxes in future years, unless we start cutting back.
