welcome back to fox 45 early edition, 5:30 is the time. i'm patrice harris. let's get a check of our forecast with meteorologist steve fertig. good morning. >> good morning to you patrice. this is a time when you don't mind being under a high pressure. >> yeah. >> i'm talking about the atmosphere. it's bringing us a nice day.

we had one yesterday and we are going to have another one today. look at the sky conditions and you will see that we have dry conditions over the region. temperature wise not bad. 48 degrees in baltimore. 47 in d.c. and in salisbury it's free. oakland at 43, a little bit more moisture and that is keeping the temperatures from dropping as much, but no rain out there. it will be a clear sky and frankly a lot of sunshine coming your way today as the temperatures get up to where they were yesterday in the low 60s it looks like. 44 is where we start on average around the state and 66 by noon climbing to the high of 61 degrees today between about 3 and 4:00 this afternoon and we drop back to 57. all in all, a very nice day. how many more nice days ahead of this? take a look in a few minutes. right now candace dold has a check on the traffic edge. candace. >> reporter: well, steve, we have a nice and quiet commute on the roadways this morning. in fact, here is a live look, we're talking about 695 at liberty road. you can see cars are cruising

along both the inner and outer loop lanes. that's what you will find on the entire stretch from 795 to 95. in fact, we're in the green so no significant delays, 11 minutes, at 54 miles per hour. 95 is looking a-okay from the fort mack henry tunnel, 8 minutes to 54 miles per hour and only 53 miles per hour with an 8-minute trip harbor tunnel down toward 795. that's a look at the commute, patrice, back to you. first on fox, exclusive pictures of what appears to be speed camera operators speeding down the road. megan gilliland is live along i-695 where the cameras have been turned. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice. unfortunately i think we have all seen those speed cameras. they're operating at work zones like these ones, they're on vehicles along the road and snap

pictures of cars speeding by. on sunday afternoon, a driver going 80 miles per hour claims to have caught one of those speed camera vehicles speeding right past him. he pulled out his phone and started recording. the vehicle was with the state safe speed going down on 70, for at least 10 miles showing no signs of slowing. at one point when he got close by, he saw the speed vehicle slam on the brakes and then keep going. >> they think they can't get tickets, they can't get in trouble, because they're the ones issuing the tickets. it's messed up. that's the only reason i took the video. if it was a ups truck speeding, i wouldn't have really cared. >> reporter: the vehicles are owned by a project company that administrators the state program. state highway officials tell us they are addressing thish to ensure that this doesn't happen again. this morning we have not seen any of the speed camera vehicles go flying but, but we have seen a few drivers go by quickly, 62 miles per hour we caught the

speed limit here 50 miles per hour. be careful out there. reporting live this morning in lutherville, i'm megan gilliland. city police are called to the scene of a homicide in northeast baltimore. it happened at 11:30 on round hill road near loch raven boulevard. when officers arrived they found a man who had been shot. he later died at john hopkins. there's no word on a suspect. a man is flown to shock trauma ever being shot in baltimore county. gunfire rang out on guy way in dundalk around 8:00 last night. the victim was hit in the chest, there's no information on his condition at this time. police don't have a suspect or a motive in the incident. a settlement is reached in the case of st. joseph's medical center implanting unnecessary stented in several patients. the hospital has agreed to repay the money it received from medicaid and medicare, but still says it did nothing wrong. the doctor at the center of the case, denies wronggoing saying

he was just following protocol. he is now suing the hospital for fraud, invasion of privacy and emotional distress. >> i can promise everyone of my patients that what i did was what i would want for myself, for anybody in my family, my mother, my father, they were treated appropriately and with the highest regard for their well being. >> the hospital has agreed to pay a total of $22 million. st. jo's still faces law suit by more than 100 patients. the woman who lied about having cancer and then scammed thousands of dollars from sympathetic friends gets additional jail time. 38 years old leoni was sentenced to 15 years behind bars, now she has been sentenced for another six years, because the cancer scam condition is a violation of privacy cases where she was

found guilty of the mortgage fraud. starting at the top with a special green roof. joel d smith is live on top of the roof to show us how this idea would result in a cleaner bay, no bees and better food. good morning, joel. >> reporter: it seems like a no brainer. good stuff here patrice. i'm going to show you. this is the roof i rooftop and s stuff was planted in a couple of days ago. it's going to be as healthy as you can imagine and all of those good things that you talked about are the result of having a green roof. so why don't we see more of these? i'm going to talk to yuran about that. how come there's not more of these? >> every green roof is a big price tag, so it's still on the pricey side. the more implementations of green roof in the city you get, the more competitive, the companies and the cheaper the price. >> reporter: right now the price is a big factor. >> yes, it's a big factor,

that's why a lot of cities offer incentives to help the people install the big roofs because they have a lot of benefits for the city and the community and at the end for the taxpayer. >> reporter: we were talking about the bees, why do they like to come here. even though it's in the middle of city. >> wherever you provide food sources they look to be there. it's important that they pollinate the other plants of people's backyards and front yards. i think it's a good idea ors tell us o.>> reporter: tell uss company why is resolved to do this? >> they are in the research program in all of the green materials, they offer all the cisterns, the water retention and green roof on site. >> reporter: it makes sense for them to do it. patrice, it takes a specific company to want to do this. the costs are a lot higher than a traditional roof. there's some benefits and bragging rights when you're talking about something like this, too. >> joel, give us a quick lesson

of how having a green roof is going to translate to better food, and better bay all of that stuff that you talked about. >> reporter: instead the water hitting the top of the roof, it's soaked into the soil that makes it cleaner. when it comes off it's in better shape. and it actually makes the vegetation here grow a little bit. bees like to come here. bees pollinate all of the rest of the food that we eat. so that good for everybody. did we get there. >> i'm there with you, joel, thank you. soldiers based out of for ft meade. and it provides a place to get counseling, learn about government benefits and obtain referrals to outside of service. all this week here on fox 45 we're honor our nation's heros with a special soldier's salute.

throughout january and february. that is if the weather allows it. ticticket prices will be $8 for adults and $5 for. this will be the first time that the zoo will be open during the winter months. an attack on a news crew caught on tape. take a look at this. witnesses say mourners at a florida memorial service grew upset as a reporter interviewed a family member without permission. that is when the group walked up to a crew member and shoved him and punched him in the face. only problem is that the group attacked the photographer from a wrong t.v. station. luckily the photographer was not seriously hurt, but two people were arrested for that attack. thousands of people are stranded at sea after an engine fire cuts the power o a carnival cruise ship. tug boats are working to pull the splendor and it's 4500

descry scan on hdry jane anr remains steady. 48 degrees this morning in baltimore and 47 in d.c. and up in hagerstown 41 and oakland 43 degrees where it's tiply a lot cooler, not too bad today. the winds diminish some. that is because low pressure moves slightly. it's slow-moving but it moves off to the east. more importantly the high pressure moves closer to us, and that will bring you the pretty day today with the northerly flow that is going to keep us, well, pretty mild, actually as the air compresses it moves out. and as you will see, plenty of sunshine in store for us not just for today but the next several days. then the frontal boundary comes through and brings us the shower chance but not until tuesday and even then only about a 30% chance. we look a at a nice stretch of weather coming.

58 degrees for the high temperature today. we will call partly cloudy and a little breezier still, 10-20-mile-an-hour wind. and breezier there. inland, not bad at all. 61 degrees, in very nice in fact. lots of sunshine, northerly wind diminished to 10-20 miles per hour. high temperature of 61 degrees and a northerly wind at 5-10. as we check out tonight, you will see mainly clear skies, a drop of 39 degrees for the overnight low. typically it's cooler than that down on 36 on average. tomorrow, veterans day, 58 degrees, lots of sunshine, 60 for your friday and 62 on saturday, plenty of sun. 61 mostly sunny on sunday and then the clouds increase a little bit toward monday and especially tuesday. in comes the chance of a shower as the frontal boundary that will be weakening brings a 30% chance of the showers then. for a look at what is happening on the roadways right now, here is candace dold with the traffic edge. >> reporter: thanks, steve.

we are fortunate enough to have a pleasant drive out there. the numbers for speeds 51 miles per hour on 95 traveling through whitemarsh. 63 on 95 right near 395 aad just at 58 miles per hour on the jfx. now speaking of 83, let's take a live look moving through baltimore county this morning, here it is at shawan road. you can see a few scattered cars here on the northbound and southbound making the push toward the beltway. once you hop on the beltway, let's take a look at the pikesville. it's getting busy on the outer loop lanes toward 795, but to brake lights in either direction. as you go around the bend, near 795, let's take a live look near liberty road and see how that is shaping up. it's going to start to shaping in as the cars are filtering in. that volume is accumulating, but again, so far traveling at top speed. pretty much the same deal traveling at 695 moving at frederick road for you. traveling in the catonsville

best guide, because even expiration dates can be confusing. first of all, they're not even regulated by the government. it's all up to the manufacturer. >> expirations have to do more with quality of the food rather than the safety of the food. >> reporter: first the sell by date, that when the store needs to move the merchandise off-the-shelf. the best buy or use by date is when the product is going past its peak, also a good guide of when to toss things out. >> you know when the milk smells off or just a little of the taste is bad, that most of the time is not dangerous, but it is -- but the quality is bad ask it'bad andit's a good idea to tt ors milk will last two days past of the due date, and yogurt a week. and did el deli a few days paste day. and here is the big catch with

expiration dates, often they don't apply once you have opened the container. >> if it's best by 1-11-12, but that is not true after you open it. >> right. after you open it, that's a whole new story. >> reporter: a good guide for most opened food, it should be used within a week. >> how are you supposed to know that, there's nothing here that says used within a week or 10 days. it says it must be refrigerated. but it doesn't say how long it has after you open it? >> that is one of those judgment calls you need to make. >> reporter: this expires 10-20-2010. that is today. >> that is good. >> do we keep it or toss it? >> you know, looking at this catsup, you know i might use it a few more times and toss it. >> reporter: the catch with cap sufficient and other foods, -- catsup and other foods, keep it clean around the top the container. outside of the fridge that olive oil will last for months. you will taste the difference

sports. with the victory over the miami dolphins, the ravens national profile has risen even higher. indeed the latest espn power ranks have them number one in the nfl ahead of pittsburgh and that of course makes it even sweeter. that means the ravens are becoming a team the nation wants to see. they defeated the jets on monday night on week one. when you're the only game in town on a given night, it adds to a certain sense of excitement and the ravens are no exception to that rule. >> the players are thrilled to be the only game. it will be a great environment. it's going to be loud. it's going to be at their place. our guys are comfortable with that. we have done that a lot in the last three years, it will be 10 times that we have been on that kind of environment on the road. we loo will be looking forward . >> thursday night it will be a great atmosphere. i know our guys are excited.

we played on monday night and this is the first thursday night opener. i don't say it feels like week one, but it feels good that we're on a short week and we have a challenge ahead of our team. we relish challenges and it's going to be a great game between us and atlanta. >> the time cuts down and the ordinarily the players have monday, and tuesday off. they don't hit the practice field until today. later today they will be getting an airplane for atlanta. that is not an optimum situation, but the ravens see it as something that has to be overcome. >> i know that we're going do our best. we got a short week. it's on your schedule, it's on your schedule, deal with it. the close talks the two games before we played the first game. we knew what to expect coming into this game. we will be ready. >> try to rest as much as
