3 the investigation continues and many questions remain this morning... from the massive train derailment in ellicott city. city. the pictures behind us show the scale of the wreck.21 cars from a c-s-x train jump the tracks... 2 teenagers die... and investigators are trying to gather enough evidence to figure out what hap. happened. joel d. smith was among the firstton the scene yesterday after it happened... and he is back there streaming now with the latest on why the emergency brake is at the center of the investigation. good morning joel d.

right now..... c-s-x crews are carefully up- righting wrecked cars.. and removing spilled coal.... but so many questions remain aa to how we got to this scene... a wreck that killed two 19 year old girls. the derailment around midnight tuesday killed , elizabeth nass and rose mayr, both college students. the railroad crosses over main street in ellicott city, and investigators now believe the students were sitting on the &prailroad bridge with their as it passed a few feet behind - them.... you can see where tte coal is pouring out there... this is where they might have been, when for some reason, the train jumped the tracks, causing open cars filled with coal to tip over. police found the girls buried under a hill of coal.. dead. initially, investigators wanted to knowwif the engineer slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting the young women.. perhaps triggering the crash. but investigators say the crew members on board, iicluding an engineer trainee, say they did not hear or see anything before the derailment. they say the emergency brake applied automatically. 3 (southworth/ntsb) "when there's a breaa in the brake

23 year old officer adrian morris was killed monday afternoon onni-95 near beltsville.he lost control of his police car... and ran off the road. meanwhile, the other officer has been released from the hosptial. missouri congressman todd akin is sticking with his bid for the senate... despite heavy pressure from nearly all sides to bow out. the flashpoint... his controversial comments on abortion. meanwhile... as andrew spencer explains... the republican party is preparing to take up the issue of abortion once again. 3 despite calls to quit his u-s senate race, republican congreesman todd akin let a withdrawal deadline pass tuesday night. he's under heavy fire for saying rape rarely leads to pregnancy. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. the political fallout prompted repeated apologies from akin. tuesday. rape is an evil act. i used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that i apologize. both presidential

campaigns have strongly condemned akin's comments. meanwhile -- the republican party's platform committee approved a platform calling for a constitutional amendment banning abortion. it does not contain any explicit exemptions for rape or incest. delegates will vote on it during next week's republican national convention in tampa. and republican senator scott brown rejected such a stance in a letter to the republican national committee. he wrote, quote -- "i believe this is a mistake because it fails to recognize the views of pro- choice republicans like myself." the romney campaign made its position clear sunday. a statement says quote -- "a romney-ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape." i'm andrew spencer reporting. the republican platform committee still has to finalize the draft platform language... before the convention. capitol hill is out with its annual list... of the wealthiest members of ccngress. representative michael texas
