for one of the least of these, you do for me." now you have a chance to truly reach out to the least of his brothers and sisters, to help the poorest of the poor and show tm god's love through your compassion today. so, please call or go online. suering children are counting on you. >> announcer: here in a remote area of haiti, 7-year-old dieuestbon starts his day. he collects rocks from the mountain paths. it's a struggle just to pick them up, let alone carry them all the way home. but these rocks represent his only hope -- hope that he can use them to build a new house someday. his name means "god is good," a name that seems to be sharp contrast to the desperate, harsh
9:07 am
life he leads. dieuestbon lives here with his mother and father and little brother keren in borrowed tent. there's nothing inside but a few scattered possessions. he sleeps on a tarp on sharp rocks, with nothing to cover him at night. when it rains, water comes rushing in. he has to stand up until it stops. it wasn't always like this. they once had a home and a much better life in town. then, dieuestbon's father, marius, had a major stroke that left him partially paralyzed. he lost his job, his land, and they were forced to move out of the village to this isolated hill. dieuestbon's mother, evelyene, earns a little money washing clothes, but there hasn't been any work, so there's no money
9:08 am
for food. she has to resort to begging for help. >> [ speaking native language ] >> interpreter: i have nothing, and i don't have a place to live. it's only neighbors that are helping me to find something to eat. i have nbed. i have no table. i borrowed everything from my >> announcer: dieuestbon once went to school and was aood student, but when his dad got sick, he had to drop out. the burdens of being the man of the house have fallen on his shoulders. for some food, dieuestbon does there will be food to cook. do malnrition has stunt his growth. he weighs about half the weight
9:09 am
of a normal 7-year-old, but he's doing the work of a full-grown man on an empty stomach. food is scarce, but water is even scarcer. it's dieuestbon's job to make e 4-hour round trip to the nearest freshwater source. he never seems to stop. but after hours of work and no food, he grows weak. and it's not just from lack of food. dysentery and chronic diarrhea are draining his frail body of protein and iron, and there's no money for medicine. >> [ speaking native language ] >> interpreter: i'm alys so hungry. i have pain in my stomach. i feel like my head is turning, like i'm dizzy. i have diarrhea. i don't feel good at all. >> announcer: this exhausted little boy is yearning for the only thing that can take away the pain.
9:10 am
>> [ speaking native language ] >> interpreter: when i'm hungry, i drink saltwater. >> announcer: evelyene couldn't find any food today, and it's heartbreaking for her to see her children go hungry. so she does the only thing she can to help dull the pain of hunger. she has some dried salt. she carefully picks out the dirt, washes it, and then throws it in a pot. the saltwater helps the pain go away, but she doesn't realize how dangous it is for her children. it causes dehydration, diarrhea, and possibly even death. >> [ speaking native language ] interpreter: most of the time, i'm crying days and nights because can't sleep. i don't know about tomorrow -- how i'm going to find food. and then, when they all start crying and hanging on my l, the only thing i can do isry
9:11 am
with them. well c. i'm always praying for dieuestbon. i don't want him to live like this. i'm praying to god to make a path for him. i'm asking you, jesus -- in this situation, i can't make it anymore. i ask you, lord, open the door for me so i can get through. hold my hand, lord, so i can make it. and i pray to you, lord, in the name of your son jesus christ. amen. >> announcer: dieuestbon dreams of a different life -- a home, a full stomach, a life free from worry and pain. you can help lift his burdens and make his dreams come true. you can help save his life and future. call now.
9:12 am
>> i invite you to say a prayer for these children today. they have no one else to turn to. and every day without food is another day of pain and despair. so, please look into your heart and consider the enormous blessing you can bring to a child when you become an angel of the poor today. your monthly gifts will rush food and medicine to save lives. please, make that call now. >> we walked into a home once where there was a little child eating a handful of rice, and his little brother, who was about 4 years old, was standing there, looking very woefullyt his little brother, who was eating. and we asked him, "why are you not eating, also?" and he said, "today, it's not my turn to eat." imagine the pain and agony of a mother who has to tell her child who's crying of hunger, "today,
9:13 am
it's not your turn." if we do not get help right now, if we do not get help today, there are a number of children who will definitely lose their lives. the ones that we help, we see the sparkle in their eyes. we see the energy that comes from being able to have some food and clean water. but it's the ones that we haven't reached yet, because those are the ones that even tomorrow might be too late. >> you have an opportunity to change everything for children who go to bed hungry, who wake up hungry, who spend much of their day in a desperate search for food. they get sick, and there are no medicines. they simply suffer and hope the sickness will pass. and many die as their mothers watch, helpless to save them. this is the plight of so many children in the impoverished places where food for the poor serves. please, pick up the phone or go
9:14 am
online to help. >> announcer: there's deep sorrow in angela's eyes. this frail 10-year-old carries a terrible burden of suffering. she lives in crushing poverty in this one-room shack with her mom and four siblings, poverty made worse when her father committed suicide a year ago. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: the children get very sad because we have nothing to eat. they tell me, "we don't have a house, mama. we don't have a bed, mama. other children have a mom and dad. they he a bed and clothes. they have everything, and we have nothing. why are we living this way?" i tell them i don't know. >> announcer: widowed, orphaned, this family has nothing -- no
9:15 am
electricity or clean water. they sleep huddled together in the dirt with only each other to keep them warm on freezing nights. angela doesn't go to school. instead, she and her 12-year-old sister stephanie do whatever they can to help their mother, bonifacia. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: we go to the dump two times a week. sometimes we find things in the trash. sometimes we find something to eat there. [ voice breaking ] we also find cans and bottles, and we bring them home to sell so i can buy something for my children. >> announcer: this is a dangerous place for a child. shards of glass and scraps of ragged metal lie everywhere. even worse, the girls have no shoes. one cut could be lethal, but they forage on.
9:16 am
a lot of hard work earns very little return, maybe a dollar if they're lucky. not nearly enough to feed them all. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: now that my daddy's not here to give money to my mom, i feel so poor. we want a house. we want a blanket. we want a bed. but we don't have them. it hurts so much because i'm so sad that my daddy's not here. it hurts in my heart that my daddy's not here. >> announcer: chronic hunger has left angela thin, malnourished, and constantly sick. she's too weak to fight off the colds and fevers that plague her. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: mom gathers herbs when we have a fever. the other day, we could not even get up. mama gives us the herbs, but we
9:17 am
never get better. >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: when the children here get sick, they often die. i've never taken my children to the doctor because i have no money. [ voice breaking ] i'm afraid that they will get sick one day and one of them will die. this is what scares me. >> announcer: what will the future hold for angela and her siblings? how long can they go on without food, clothing, shoes, or medicines? >> [ speaking spanish ] >> interpreter: the fear i have is that when my children are older, what will they do? [ crying ] what will they be? i just don't want my children to grow up the way i did, the way i've suffered. >> [ sighs ] >> announcer: depravation this extreme can crush even the strongest spirit.
9:18 am
but you can see in angela's heart there's still a spark of hope -- hope that someone will reach out and save her from the darkness that's closing in, someone like you. >> the little ones you've seen today are children of god. we cannot forsake them. for so many of these girls and boys, the situation is critical. too many are dying. so, please, say a prayer, look into your heart, and consider the blessing you can bring for such a small amount each month. make that call now or go to foodforthepoor.org. >> announcer: right now, you have the power to save the lives of children who may die from starvation and disease. call now and become an angel of the poor for just $19 a month.
