--it's time to lace 'em up... and throw it down... we're all about high school hoops this week on the show! we'll go around the country highlighting the top prep basketball players in america, and give you an idea of what to expect this season... the high flyers... the sharp shooters... and the inspiring leaders are all coming your way next... -- (show open) hi everybody, and welcome to the show that goes across the the nation searching for the best prep athletes america has to offer... i'm your host, charles davis.

today, we're focusing on the hichool basketball season, giving you a preview of what to expect this year... we'll get started in a city with very proud hoops history - chicago... -- the windy city is used to seeing big time talent on its high school basketball courts... quite a few nba stars the chicago area...l in including recent top overall picks derrick rose and anthony davis... as well as one of last year's top prospects, current duke blue devil jabari parker... thisear, however, chicago may have its most talented crop of seniors ever... it's headlined by jahlil (jah-leel) okafor (oak-uh-four), a cter at local powerhouse whitney young... he's the nation's p overall player in the 2014 class, and his coach believes his legacy could grow far beyond that... coach - " the history of chicago basketball is daunting." "y've d players of who have done great things in the nba. so, when you start trying to label or rank where jahlil will be, it's really a challenge. and i think in any barber shop, in any park district, the debate will range on for years. but from my standpoint, i would say that jahlil arguably h a chance at

the end of his four years of high school basketball to be ranked one of the top three or four players in our state as a high school player, and by the time he's playing basketball in totality, we'll have a chance to debate if he's not only one of the best in chicago, but in the unit states of america." it helps to have talented teammates, and okafor does in paul white, a georgetown commit who is a consensus top 100 prospect himself... white is a confident player who is out to prove he's one of the nation's best... paul white: i used to be in the top ten in my class, and injuries set me back. i'm determined to return to my original spot and push even further than that. there's also plenty of talent in the area outside of whitney young.... like cliff alexander... an athletic six-foot-eight power rward at curie (cure-ee) high school. he loves to attack the basket and control a game... not only is he talented enough to lead curie to a state title, he's also good enough to challenge okafor for the top overall spot in the 2014 class.

cliff alexander: it means a lot to be the number one player in the country. every night there's a target on your back. and i want that type of competition. and not to be overlooked in the greater chicago area is tyler ulis (you-liss)... actually, the five-foot-eight point guard has been overlooked most of his life. and his coach warns that that's a mistake. mike taylor: people think i'm crazy for saying this, but every game since he's beshman, he's been the best player on the floor, and that gives us a chance to win every night. tyler ulis: there's always gonna be that question: is he big enough, is he tall enough, but it really doesn't matter to me. they thing you have to be a certain height to play the game, ou know how to play, then you can get around all of that. one person who definitely didn't overlook ulis is kentucky head coach john calipari, who offered ulis larship, and tyler is verbally committed to join the wildcats next fall... with all of this talent in one city, it should be another great season for chicago hoops... and we'll have more on all of these players in future episodes... -- checking out our top five players in the midwest, okafor and

started with basketball around 3. just being in the gym with my dad and getting shots up, just shooting and trying to dribble. i just see myself playing basketball my whole life. at one point, i gave it up because i felt i didn't have the love for the game anymore. i loved baseball, so i tried baseball three years ago. fortunately enough for coach turco, i turned around and played basketball again. i think it's been a great decision i made. i just found a love for the game again, and that's why i work so hard every day because i have a newfound love for it. look for more on towns and whitehead later this season... those two sit at one and two in our northeast top five. check out the rest of the list... -- now to the southwest... after producing three of the nation's top ten players a year ago, the state of texas is at it again... two texans sit among the nation's top five this year, and quite a few more are scattered throughout the top 100... the headliner in texas is

emmanuel mudiay (moo-dee-ay)... the six-foot-five point guard seemingly scores at will for prime prep academy in dallas... he's been the face of the program since it opened a year a, and all eyes will be on this s-m-u commit as he tries to lead his team to a national championship... just across town is probably the fastest riser in the 2014 class: myles turner of euless (you-liss) trinity... turner was a relative unknown a year ago... but after a strong summer of a-a-u ball, he's now a top five prospect who has several quality programs begging for his commitment. he's looking up at mudiay for now, though, in our southwest top five... with houston-area stars justice winslow and justin jackson right behind him... -- we'll take a break, but we have more regions to get to, so don't go anywhere... ♪ music

ermon lane, a 6'3 wide out from homestead florida is big dreams.out to catch ahmad ward: ermon lane as a football player, he wants to go against the best. i have seen him do things that i have never seen other football playe do before. ermon lane: i know that i can play some football. when i first played the offensive side of the ball, i scored 28 times in one year. tara luton: he's been improving every chance he gets. he has a dream that he needs to fulfill, and he's doing all he can do to get there. ermon: my dreams are to get to college, be there for my family, make it to the nfl, ermon is a dedicated player, whose worth ethic and determination inspires his teammates. ermon: my teammates, they look up to me. they say how much the colleges come in and out of the school. and everytime they need me, i just talk to them, keep me on the right track. coach: all the kids here see that if i want to get the level that he's at, i have to work hard. tara: everybody's talking about him.he has a good fan club, everybody loves him. ermon: growing up, everybody has a hero. if i could be somebody's

hero, that would be a great opportunity to give even heroes need support, and ermon finds comfort knowing that his family has his back. ermon: my relationship with my family is good. they support me 100 percent. just want to be the best. coach: the biggest motivation for success is his family. he always speaks about his mother and his grandma. he says he always wants to make sure that he can take care of them. tara: to see him go to college, that would mean a lot to me. he would be the first one to go. i want him to go somewhere and make something out of himself. to be where he's at today, i'm just so proud of him. ermon: it'll be a proud moment when i step on a college campus, where academics is important, because you can't play football forever, you've gotta have a backup plan. i'm just chasing a dream. -- to the southeast, now, where the player to watch may not be a blue chip prospect, but you certainly don't want to miss him... with over 5 million redents , atlanta is the 9th largest metropolitan area in the united states. just a few miles north of

downtown is the suburb of alpharetta. while it looks le just another suburb off the interstate it is also home to one of our nation's most inspirational athletes. meet zach hodskins, a senior guard at milton high school. despite being born without a left hand, zach is one of the best shooters in the state. for his parents bob and stephanie, zach's accomplishments on the basketball court can be attributed to a strong faith and a positive attitude. bob hodskins :30 "well it was pretty shocking in the delivery room because we weren't expecting it. we didn't have any forewarning it all. it was traumatic at the time but we felt it was in god's hands so we accepted it and moved forward." stephanie hodskins "well initially we were shocked but the main thing was that he was breathing and he amazed us, at first we thought well there's going to be struggles and thought are there things he won't be able to do. in a short period of time we realized there's nothing he can't do." the hodskins family moved to the alpharetta just before zach's junior season, specifically so zach could attend milton high school.

the eagles' basketball program has emerged as a powerhouse over the last 5 years. the recent arrival of head coach van keys has helped the eagles maintain the success that started in 2008 . though he initiay might have had concerns about his newest player, it didn't take long for him to become a believer. 1:16 "i heard about it and you know that's the first thing you're drawn to but once you get him on the court, he's no different than any other kid. zach's a competitor and it's amazing what he can do on the court. we don't change anything for him. he does the same thing everyone else does." 1:36 4:06 "zach is really a high-level shooter. this is my 30th year of coaching and he's one of the best i've ever had." 4:12 zach 1:10 "growing up i got a lot of looks, especially at school but i learned to deal with that just through life. i know people aren't looking at me because i'm different, it's just that they're curious." 1:20 spend just a little time with zach and you quickly realize his success is due in large part to a positive attitude and deep desire to prove that he belongs.

this week's life changer of the year nominee is christy grigsby of early college academy in columbus, georgia. she's an english teacher who works hard to make the material fun for her students. christy: i don't want kids to be bored in a class. learning is so much more fun whenever teachers put in the time and energy to engage the students. christy's enjoys getting creative in the classroom unique methods have yielded positive results... (singing) christy: it's lots of fun. the kids get to listen to miss grigsby rap, which is hilarious because i can't, but it's all in good fun and they're learning sat level words. shania holmes: the songs are really catchy, and everybody wants to get up and jam to it. her efforts have gained her the respect of her students and their parents. cliff rutledge: of all the teachers that you have, ms. grigsby is going to be the one you remember most in years to come because of her firmness.
