killed her was her son. irwin-j feldman. they say he voluntarily went to the police department after being called in. coupling physical evidence with many interviews they were able to make the arrest. >> most importantly i know occurred there was great concern in the neighborhood and some fear and trepidation which i understand i share those fears. i can tell you today that there is no reason for that community to be afraid of any sort of random violence or any sort of outstanding suspect. >> maureen: wbtv has covered this story since it broke. a 9-1-1 caller said it looked like feldman was robbed, but there was still jewelry on her body. back then we spoke with neighbors who were shocked that something like this happened in their maybe.

it is primarily retirees and primarily people even older than i am. i am 70. >> very quiet neighborhood really. i came out this morning and saw the fire truck and i figured somebody was sick. >> maureen: wbtv has a crew continuing to work on this story tonight. we will have a full update on wbtv news at 11:00. >> maureen: continuing coverage of a suspected it norovirus outbreak affecting two local schools. charlotte metro school and wingett university confirmed students and staff at charlotte metro have exhibited symptoms associated with the virus. today the director of the mecklenburg county health department addressed the outbreak at the charlotte metro school. >> we know 63 students did not come to school. so we are assuming the majority of them are from this infection. and today an additional seven students were sent home because they were having symptoms.

taking a closer look at this nasty bug. exactly what is the norovirus and what is the best treatment? wbtv's alex giles has details new on "primetime." >> stomach bug and stomach flu. if you had the nausea and diarrhea you know the norovirus all too well. >> doctors say it can be spread through fecal matter, saliva and contaminated foods. >> it is all contagious if you are not doing good hand washing and especially the children playing with toys and hand-to-mouth activities. >> there is no medicine to treat the virus so rest and hydration are key to recovery. >> it is a virus and you have to treat the symptoms. trying your best to stay hydrated. keeping your electro lights up. anything for the

higher and that's when you suspect dehydration is setting in and you should seek medical attention. >> you are most contagious when you are sick with the virus in the first few days after it passes. i'm alex giles. >> maureen: it is a horrible, horrible thing to have. if you are an adult with symptoms that last more than 24 hours and cannot keep anything down you may want to see your doctor. for kid the window of time is smaller. charlotte metro school will be closed on friday so the schools and buses can be thoroughly cleaned. >> maureen: just into the wbtv newsroom, this has now been confirmed as an f0 tornado in chesterfield county. we have this picture and i believe this is from yesterday at the height of the storm. our chief meteorologist eric thomas just got the news in. explain to us what you learned. >> maureen it looks like an f0 that would be a tornado.

it was between 3:15 and 3:30 and we were on the air covering that and it was between patrick and shara. that's what we have. thankfully it was not stronger than that. we had close calls. today we are on the backside of that system, and you can see the snow. it is wrapping back into the north carolina high country along with the gusty winds. you can see it. the snow over avery county and mitchell and yancey as well. the winter weather advisories continue. they had four to six inches in the highest elevations. one to three in the more populated areas. locks like another one to two overnight. the wind advisory for gusts maybe 50 miles an hour. a well placed advisory. wind gusts are at 47 and they could still be around 33 miles per hour at 11:00 this evening. and you will see it will be breezy into the piedmont. that's the way things are looking right now. the next couple mornings are

bundle up. it is part of your seven-day first alert forecast. >> maureen: neighbors in pageland are holding a meeting on the police chief who is on administrative leave. we covered the story since november. that's when chief larry brown was put on leave. since then neighbors say they haven't gotten answers as to why this happened. we spoke with neighbors this week who tell us a meeting was held on tuesday night that started at 6:30 and lasted until 12:45 on wednesday morning. they hoped for answers about the chief situation and they tell us they didn't get those answers. go to wbtv.com to learn more. we will continue to follow this bringing you updates as soon as they become available. >> maureen: the south carolina democratic primary is this saturday. we are introducing you to a man who could be hillary clinton's biggest and oldest fan. russell stevens is 100 years old and he knows who he will vote for. take a look at his book and

shoppers meanwhile were perplexed and they got plenty of cell phone video. >> maureen: several were rescued off rockaway beach. watch as the coast guard swoops in and takes them one by one to safety. the man needed to be rescued after their 74-foot fishing boat ran aground for unknown reasons. during the rescue waves reached 10 to 12-feet high. >> maureen: a massachusetts man's sobriety test has gone viral after he those -- nose-dives and appearing to fall in the middle of it. this after his mini-van hit a pick up truck and a pedestrian. the man had a bond hearing in the hospital room. he was given a $15,000 bond. we do not know the victim's condition, but that man should not have been behind the wheel. >> maureen: a mother speaks out about the moment she decided to use a mattress to protect her kids from a tornado.

is tonight on wbtv and cbs. >> maureen: a tragic story out of san diego. a 10-year-old child died after saving two younger children from a run away car. wbtv anchor molly granthom has the story new on "primetime." >> reporter: there are flowers, balloons, a candle and teddy bear near where kiara larson was killed.

the lives of two friends before she was run over. >> she saved both my daughters' lives. these are my two kid i have and both of them could have been gone in an instant. she stepped in and took over and did what she snows -- what she knows to do which is protect people. >> reporter: they have scratches from being pushed out of harm's way. >> she was a big sister to them. she was always looking out for them. she would give her life for my kids. >> reporter: the mercedes was parked on a slope. they don't know how it was put into neutral and started to roll. kiara pushed the two little ones out of the way. the car grabbed her and she was pinned. >> a sweet little girl. she was best friends with my

it is very sad. she was loved by everybody. >> she is forever a hero and forever my kids' guardian angel. >> maureen: that face. kiara was in the fourth grade. a go fund me page has been set up to help family with expenses. at last check over $42,000 has been raised. >> maureen: right now 0 "primetime" mecklenburg county is one of the counties under the state of emergency. the other counties include gaston and forsythe. here at home in charlotte some schools were either closed or delayed because they were still without power. school administrators said they would be closed because there was no way to prepare meals for kids. crews worked there to restore power.

been confirmed from the storm. one of them hit a home in williams burrow. that is northeast of durham. a mother and her children were inside the home. she used a mattress to protect her family. brigida mac has that story now on "primetime." rapt -- >> reporter: it was around 4:45 and crystal west knew she had to get her children to safety jie. and when i -- >> and when i got them into the bathroom i could see it touched down. it was crazy. you can see the tin going in circles. there was insulation from other homes and it was circling around us. >> reporter: they came out of their home to find this across the street. another home, one in their family for a a hundred years torn apart. >> it is where my grandma and him grew up. it was destroyed now. >> it was one of the scarest things i have been through in my life.

been through rough storms before, but nothing like this. >> nothing that hit this close to home and that has ever destroyed anything that meant something to us. >> reporter: while a piece of family history is gone they are thankful no one was hurt. >> we are thankful us and our kids and our families are okay. >> reporter: wbtv on your side for "primetime." >> sounds like she knew exactly what to do. take a look at the data from the national weather service regarding yesterday's storms. this is on tuesday. there were 18 total reports of storms and one reportf a possible tornado. watch as we advance each day on the 23rd, 48 reports of possible tornadoes. 133 storm reports. and then 28 reports of possible tornadoes and 513 storm reports. that's one system over a three-day period. and that's something you said be prepared.

this is when it will arrive and it happened exactly as you forecasted it. >> we appreciate the patience of the viewers. we were on the air for this and the data was very good. i can still remember and lyndsay is over there talking about patrick and talking about shara and rolling up along highway one. have a look at this map, maureen. it was almost uncanny how it followed highway 1 into north carolina where it was a problem in richmond county as well. the ef0 which is a category of 85 miles an hour winds. and the storms are producing this wind even in the absence of the tornado. that's what we were trying to stress yesterday. this was the motion of the storm off to the northeast. there is patrick. highway 1. this was happening between 3:16 and throughy:25 in the

afternoon. you can see the snow associated with it. it is across avery county and it is still pretty active into mitchell and yancey counties. it is likely we will add another one to two inches in the populated areas and perhaps even three or four more on the highest elevations in the ski slope areas and on the western slopes. the current wind gusts are no joke. it is still blowing up there about 41 miles per hour. still a wind advisory in affect. along with that winter weather advisory for that additional accumulating snow. look at this. wind gusts 20 to 30 miles an hour. there it is. you are heading out in the queen city. you know how that wind can channel through the skyscrapers. if you are heading in the uptown area you can expect the wind gusts. the temperatures won't fall that quickly. the wind does mix the air and so it doesn't cool as efficiently near the surface. beyond that have a look at the

it is still hanging around the mountains. how does it look for your out the door forecast. no matter what your level of skiing is, you know what, it is snowing. that's all that matters. it will be tapering off. the temperature is about 23 degrees during the morning hours. we take you here back closer to charlotte. another cold start and 35. that's at 8:00. the official low is probably below freezing in the queen city that will be the case over the next three days. the snow will continue to lighten up and taper off as we take you through the day on friday. closer to charlotte and the temperatures will start off again at 35 around 8:00 and take you up to about 50 with a brief surge into the low 50s for those official high temperatures. so your seven-day first alert forecast, 53 and a beautiful day on friday. we will carry that into saturday and sunday as well. it looks to be great. mid50s on saturday and then how about mid60s on sunday. outside of that a gorgeous day
