they shared. today we heard from the man accused about what he says happened. wbtv's michael clark has that story now on "primetime." >> with tears in his eyes the accused killer tells a jury he didn't mean to stab his wife, elaine, to death. >> reporter: his plan was to talk to his wife of 35 years, but prosecutors say he had a knife in his hand the entire time. one he claims was meant for himself. >> [inaudible] >> reporter: the emotional testimony came after two officers testified they listened to him confess. once to a deputy and another to a sister as they were in

>> there was a confrontation and she begged him to stop. >> reporter: her husband taped a sign to the door so his grandchild wouldn't come in the room. she lives in the same house and typically sleeps with them. he says he called family members to apologize and tried to kill himself. investigators say he never claimed it was accidental. >> he cut his own wrist and got on the bed next to his wife's and told her he would die with her. >> reporter: his dna was on the knife and prosecutors say he never called anyone for help. tensions will be left to the jury. >> did you intentionally stab your wife? >> no, sir. >> reporter: michael clark, wbtv on your side. >> maureen: he faces 30 years to life if convicted. 5 live look now through our

and it was powerful. it produced several small tornadoes. a florida woman is fighting for her pet alligator. in a recent interview she explains her fight to keep him. >> since they want to put him outside he is sun sensitive and he can't go outside. they have a two and a half acre rule. >> my land does not meet that. but he does president meet it because he can't go outside. he is special needs. >> maureen: rambo is 125 pounds and mary thorn says she has had him since he was about four years old. she decided to take him home from a wildlife facility when they didn't know what to do with him because he was so sensitive to sunlight. >> maureen: look at these massive flames coming from a luxury yacht in the virgin islands.

south carolina highway patrol is warning drivers after a video of a brake check suv flipping went viral. it happened in wisconsin and caused the tailgater to lose control and skid into the median there. in south carolina you could get a reckless driving ticket for doing this. that means six points on your driver's license plus a fine. a second conviction results in a suspended license. >> maureen: booze it and lose it is underway. people died because of unrelated crashes. law enforcement are outlooking for those who are drinking and driving. it will be -- there will be sobriety checks set up all across the state. >> it is very convenient and very cost effective i think. it is all of the costs involved.

the legal processes and insurances. >> maureen: if you were to get a dwi in north carolina it will cost you, as you heard, several thousand dollars. >> maureen: a charlotte attorney accused of sleeping during a trial has changed according to the state bar association's website. he is no longer listed as active according to the state website. his status has changed because, quote, the lawyer is end quote. he is the attorney who had a racketeering case tossed out because he kept nodding op -- nodding off during the trial. sentence. we are told the status change happened because mackey didn't fulfill his continuing education requirement. he has 30 days to wrap up the

accept new ones. >> maureen: if you like owls this next story is sure to make you smile. the raptor center has taken in a gray horned owl, but this tiny bird of prey is not without a mother. >> reporter: i was warned before opening this door that the adult foster mother might very well try to attack. but she didn't. maybe that's why she knew we were here to do a story on her and the foster owl. >> that was the clacking sound she was making with her beak. they puff up to make themselves look big. i am surprised she didn't step in front of the baby. normally she tries to get in front. sometimes she can be very, very aggressive, but she was being good today. >> she has been a surrogate

years. the latest under her wing came in with a broken shin bone. he did a surgery to fix his leg and now he is healing and learning the owl ropes from his fill in owl mom. >> he will heal just fine and that is our hope and that's our goal. this will work out pretty well though. his leg is doing well. >> he doesn't have a name. he goes by 19424. the staff here try not to bond with the rescues because one day they won't be rescueses anymore. they will be another successful release back into the wild leaving room under his wing for 19425. in huntersville with the good news, kristen hampton, wbtv on your side. >> maureen: that face is so adorable. i am so glad she did that story. the carolina raptor center gets 175 orphaned birds a year.

the viewing area. the cold air is not quite here yet. there was a front moving across the viewing area. let's do comparisons. how about lancaster. south carolina 77. you are cooler than morganton. how could there be a cool front moving across the area. sometime the chilly air takes awhile to get here. you can see this sharp boundary and the dew point has shown up and there is moist air ahead of it. the dew points in the low 20s in the catawba valley and still around 50 around monroe. there is a measure of the moisture in the atmosphere. that will continue to proceed and then eventually the cooler air will show up. it won't be quick to get here. we will be around 60 and it will be pleasant and mild in the morning. you shouldn't have disruptions

to the east. you have all of these fair skies showing up by first thing in the morning. 43 in the mountains and fair skies and mild conditions. mild and very nice and 50 degrees. but tomorrow things begin to change as you will see. we are pretty quiet and we'll track this rain. this is coming up the east coast over the weekend. until then it is about the cooler air making its way into the picture. 69 at noon and 74 at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. it is not 80 sick. that's already -- it is not 86. that's a big difference. everybody will see plenty of foothills. bringing you to the peaked moppet and the temperatures in -- piedmont and midto upper 70s. another delightful day on tap, well. the seven-day first alert forecast and a couple dry days on thursday and friday and then the area of rainfall works its way up the eastern seaboard on saturday.

tell us about vanities. it has been a hit for a longtime. >> have i been doing this off and on for almost 20 years. it can withstand the test of time. they go through high school and then college and then they grow up. >> maureen: looking at the video and you see these stages and it really is a transformation to see you in character and in costumes. describe those three stages for you. what was it like to transform? >> i have a specific vision and i stick to it. i don't change.
