to 40 shelby, gastonia, charlotte, cloud cover thicker, winds up more, not quite so cold, again the sun doesn't come up now until 7:30, we have a lot of time where we can fall off. temperatures tonight or today getting back up to 58 degrees this afternoon, below average but improvement over yesterday. we should see a lot of sunshine today. keep in mind, much colder tonight in the charlotte area, we have freeze watches and frost advisories in effect. i'll break that down in the seven day planner in a couple minutes. back over to you. >> john: thanks, al. we're working to learn more about two driverses who were killed in a head-on crash on i-485 in south charlotte. troopers say the crash happened at 2:00 yesterday morning. one of the drivers going the wrong way on the highway. wbtv's christian flores spoke to neighbors who say they are surprised crashes like this don't happen more often in the area.

happens a lot. >> reporter: the family is used to hearing about accidents. >> daily. >> gets chopped up during rush hour traffic as far as 2:00 in the morning, it is pretty pretty dark. >> north carolina highway patrol troopers tell wbtv luis menacho got on the wrong side of i-485, he crashedded on with victor castillo near the providence road exit. troopers have not confirmed if drugs or alcohol were fac crashes on i-485, neither resulted in death but alcohol was a factor in both cases. the family says they are surprised there aren't more wrecks like the one sunday morning. >> it could easily happen. >> there are not a are not a lot of signs.

>> she made the comment after this wreck, she would try to get over but it doesn't matter. >> you don't know what you would situation. >> that was christian flores reporting. we couldn't get in touch of either families. most members are out of the state or out of the country. troopers tell us they are looking over traffic camerases taken. a 16-year-old girl from shelby is dead. troopers say two vehicles head nycia copes at borders and oak grove road saturday morning. copes and a male passenger were standing in the intersection after getting out of their car. one driver hit both of them, then a second driver came by and hit copes. the male passenger was taken to the hospital for treatment. alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors at this time. several roads in greensboro are shut down after reports of a loud explosion. crews are investigating two

last night. buildings were evacuated, people sent to police headquarters for shelters this. shelters. there are no reports of injuries. the u.s. immigration and customs enforcement has temporarily halted the deportation of a high school student from north carolina. a congressman says will done accosta's deportation has been stayed. the director of ice issued an order preventing the deportation of the 19-year-old so the legal process can take place. he is being held in rural jail in georgia. his arrest is part of the efforts to find and deport immigrants part of the 2014 surge of illegal crossings. >> education not deportation. >> while his deportation delays advocates are rallying for

and more like him. yefri sort aa is facing deportation. the >> because he was born in a different country that he has to face violence. >> he is in a detention center with pending stay of removal request and he has had plenty of time to file an appeal. a final order of removal issued by a judge in january but they haven't received one. looking ahead a man accused of killing his child will continue his defense without an attorney today in charlotte. todd boderick accused of beating his six-month-old baby to death four years agoing in a charlotte motel. after a week of delays, court ended friday with a first witnesses on the stand. the mother is also charged with murder and is expected to testify for prosecutors today. hundreds went to

funeral of darryl hunt, the man who spent 20 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. at long time friend of hunt says they found the note from him saying he loved his community and describing himself as drum major for justice. the friend found the farewell note at his home. his body found march 13th by police in a vehicle in a parking lot. they said he died from several-inflicted gunshot wound. friends say he was suffering from cancer. firefighters across the carolinas are sending out their condolences for firefighter in south carolina hock died after being hit by a fire engine on the job. conway fire and horry crews responded to a big house fire yesterday. firefighter christopher ray died at the scene. he worked for the city six years. he leaves behind a wife and two daughters. the state highway patrol is investigating the accident. looking ahead an officer who was shot in the line of duty and three officerses who saved him

grayson farrell shot a lieutenant last may as officers responded to a domestic dispute. four officers will be recognized at the cornelius town meeting tonight. several charges included attempted murder are pending against farrell. members of congress are headed back to the capitol after spending three days in south carolina exploring lessons about race relations. the congressional civil rights pilgrimage ended yesterday at mahmoudemanuel ame church. dylann roof, the suspect, is white. john lewis of georgia was joined by tim scott, representative jim clyburn and more than a dozen other members of congress. historic trip for president obama, a look at what he hopeses to accomplish this week in cuba.

different story, of course saturday it was warm at 70 but got cool in the afternoon. yesterday was flat out cold and we did have rain last evening with all the cloud cover, getting back to 47 in charlotte. keep in mind we have a couple of watches and warnings already out here across the wbtv viewing area. freeze warning in effect for all of the blue counties that you see north and west of charlotte. that goes until 10:00 this morning. that is likely to be reissued tonight as temperatures are going to probably wind up colder tonight than this morning. we have a freeze watch in effect for the charlotte metro area and frost advisory east of us. we had a little bit of wind and cloud cover, that is helping to keep temperatures up a little bit. with he won't likely get down to freezing in charlotte. below freezing in boone and many of the outlying areas in the 20s. phil english reporting 21 up in linville, with a dusting of snow. streets are dry around boone but

snow from yesterday there may be a few icy patches. 40 in charlotte, wind died down, with clear skies, that is probably going to fall considerably before the sunrises, which is about 7:30. we have time here to go on this. some. outlying areas 30 in boone, 40 in the monroe area. other temperatures, 39 shelby, 40 rockingham, wadesboro, albermarle and 37 in concord. so a chilly start to the day and will be a cool day today but improvement over yesterday, by 10, 12 degrees. upper 50s, maybe a couple clouds around. tonight, lows will be down in the low 30s in the metro area and below freezing up across the mountains, that is why there is concern for frost and freeze, less wind around, frost conditions may persist, tomorrow we get in the 60s in the afternoon. in the you don't like that,
