>> brody: this is mcneeley avenue, we have a crew there live on the scene. we're told apparently when firefighters got on scene they saw smoke coming from this house but from this live look you can tell no sign of flames, they are extremely close to the home indicating that there might not be any severe threat at the moment from any flames. looks like they got it under control what may have happened but they have the caution tape up around the home, earlier we saw two to three fire trucking outs, noword on what caused this smoke or fire here, also no word on any injuries at this point. iredell county communications have been helpful filling us in on the scene there and apparently this started an hour and a half ago athour-and-a-half ago. back to you. >> christine: 6:02 right now. police are searching for a man

south charlotte this morning. it happened around 4:30 a.m. at the kangaroo express on park road at woodlawn. a man with a knife or screwdriver went in the store and stole an unknown amount of money. we're staying in touch with police on the latest on the investigation, whether we learn more we'll bring it to you more on air and online at wbtv.com. >> john: two people killed until a healed-on collision in south charlotte. of this was the scene yesterday morning on i-485 near providence road. one of the drivers was driving the wrong way when it happened. mark davenport joins us live this morning with much more on this story and mark, i find it interesting people who live in the area are not surprised this kind of crash happened, what is going on? yeah, around the crash, that is providence road near 485, we spoke to them back and forth why they weren't so surprised when

they hear ambulances, police cars, all emergency vehicles pass by their houses on a daily basis to go to accidents on 485. when they heard about the news they were not surprised at all. i want to show you more from the scene off providence near 485, a man named luis menacho got on the wrong side of i-485 on the outer loop, driving in traffic for a few miles. around 2:00 m. a sunday 2:00 a.m., he crashed head-on to victor castillo. they have not confirmed if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. toxicology report will take a couple weeks. there have been two other wrong way crashes since 2009, neither resulted in death. alcohol was a factor in both cases. the family we spoke to off providence road say they are not surprised these wrong-way collisions don't happen more often. >> the area, it could easily happen.

either, especially up the road. >> reporter: troopers are looking over traffic cameras to figure out where this driver got on 485 in the wrong direction. once we get more information, we'll get it ba can to you as soonback to you.mark davenport, wbtv on your side. >> christine: a teen was killed when she was hit by two cars in cleveland county. 16-year-old nccia copes and a man were standing at in the intersection in many shelby hit both of them, a second driver hit nycia copes. the troopers say copes dialed on impact. alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors at the time. >> john: tim moore hopeses to call a special session to discuss charlotte's controversial non-discrimination ordinance. discussions are happening with

of the ordinance centerses on allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify. the new ordinance goes in effect april 1st. the regular session for legislators begins after that date on april 25th, why they may meet early they want to get in before the ordinance goes in effect. under state law the house speaker and senate leader can call a special session if three-fifths support the move. moore is pushing for special session to take place at the end of the week. u.s. immigration and customs enforcement has temporarily halted deportation of a north carolina high school student.

until durham, he's being held in georgia. >> education not deportation. >> christine: while his detore payings was delayed, advocates are trying and rallying for a charlotte-mecklenburg school student to be released and more like him. was arrested in january, faces deportation,. >> he was born in a different country does not mean i get education and he faces violence. >> he is in a detention center with a pending stay of removal request. ice officials say he has plenty of time to file an appeal to a final order of removal issued by a judge in january but they have not received one. still plenty ahead in the

in the alert center with new details on an officer-involved shooting from durham. >> brody: one officer shot, apparently suffered minor injuries, happened around 3:45 this morning. apparently something didn't go right in the transfer process of an inmate, because it says that the officer was actually shot in the sallyport at the durham jail. the officer was shot suffered minor injuries, treated at the hospital and released. the suspect was in custody at the time of the shooting. the name of the officer not released yet. they have not said anything about what led up to the shooting. something we'll keep an eye on but happy to hear the officer only suffered minor injuries. >> john: 19 after 6:00, the nascar sprint cup series wraps up the west coast trip to fontana, california. austin dylan on the pole,

up in the mountains, upper 30s to low 40s, getting back toking 43, 44, no chance for any rain or snow for that matter. you had some yesterday, in the foothills, 57 morgan-on-to, lenoir, taylorsville, bright sunshine, little bit of a breeze this afternoon. in the charlotte area, upper 50s, may be a few spots toward wadesboro and rockingham that get close to many 60, 58 shelby, mooresville over to concord and lincolnton, we go south of town, upper 50s to about 60 from patrick and pageland toward rock hill and fort mill. sunny skies. the growing season has not started yet, no advisories in the mountains, but we have a freeze watch tonight and frost advisory east of there, as temperatures will be cold enough or likely to get frost to develop down close to freezing for most communities, outside of the mountains even, this is going to be the colder night coming up tonight, we rebound tomorrow afternoon, getting in the mid and upper 60s, if you like that you'll love going

in union county, they are going through the north carolina school board association, they will get together a list of candidates for the union county school board to choose from. this morning we may find out if the that association has put meeting. this special meeting to discuss the superintendent search taking place at 11:00 in the morning in union county. the one thing they learned from cms' search is getting the process starting instead of putting it off. some of the school board members wanted a new leader in place by next year. but they want to make sure it is done correctly. the new hire will replace dr. marchry ellis,dr. mary ellis. i'm mark davenport, wbtv on your side. >> john: voters in lancaster county will head to the polls for special election tomorrow.

million school bond referendum aimed at easing overcrowding, will build a new elementary school and high school in indian land. the bond would require residents to pay higher taxes. >> christine: all new, dozens of student and staff have gotten sick at one school until many in rockingham county. 15 students went home friday due to nausea and vomiting on sunday they reported 60 people are showing symptoms. there is no word what the illness is but officials say the school has been thoroughly clean cleaned. >> john: charlotte officials are asking for your opinion on new projects in the city. they are hosting a transportation and planning workshop from 4:00 until 8:00ing tomorrow night at grady cole center. on wednesday, proposed increaseses to fares for buses and trains.
