at risk of identity theft. hackers steal the personal information of t-mobile customers. inflight injuries. passengers are taken to the hospital when severe turbulence rattles their plane. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. authorities are trying to figure out what prompted a gunman to open fire at an oregon community college. one witness said before chris harper mercer began shooting yesterday morning, he demanded his victims say what their religion was. he killed nine people and wounded seven others. there was one security guard at the school who was unarmed. umpqua community college is located in a rural area, about 180 miles south of portland, and danielle nottingham is in roseburg. >> reporter: hundreds of

park well past midnight, holding candles and saying prayers for the victims of thursday's mass shooting at umpqua community college. >> we need love and compassion and healing. >> this is an active shooter at ucc. >> reporter: several people were killed, others wounded, when a gunman identified by authorities as 23-year-old chris harper mercer opened fire in a classroom. the incident sent the small campus into lockdown. >> we weren't even notified. i found out from my dad calling me. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news the suspect who died in a gun battle with police had four guns, including a rifle and body armor. he also blogged about violence, including the recent on-air murders of two journalists in virginia. mercer's father was visibly distraught when questioned by reporters. >> obviously, it's been a devastating day. gefting for devastating for me and my family. >> god bless the memories of

those who were killed today. families. >> reporter: authorities have searched mercer's apartment complex, as well as the college campus and parking lot, as they try to determine a motive. they are calling on the media not to use the suspect's name, but focus on those who lost their lives instead. >> that was danielle nottingham in roseburg, oregon. mass shootings in this country are piling up. according to the website shooting tracker.com, the tragedy in oregon was the 294th mass shooting in 274 days of this year and that is more than one every day. the calls for tougher gun control laws go unanswered. don champion is here in new york with more. >> reporter: good morning. the calls for stricter gun control have been constantly debated in congress, even though polls show an overwhelming americans from both sides of the political aisle are open to some restrictions on gun sales. yesterday, a clearly angry and

frustrated president obama called on the american people to demand action. >> we have become numb to this! >> reporter: more than a dozen times, the president has pushed for stronger gun control and failed. >> it cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun. >> reporter: the last time congress seriously debated gun control was back in 2013 after the sandy hook elementary school shooting in connecticut. when democrats lost control of the senate back in 2014, they lost the ability to reintroduce gun control legislation. congressional republicans argue no matter what type of laws there are, people who want a gun will find a way to get one. >> we should not target our efforts to needlessly restricting the constitutional liberties of law abide ing citizens.

the united states. the latest projected track has joaquin making a sharp turn north later today and heading east away from the coast. before that, joaquin continues to pound the bahamas with 130-mile-an-hour winds and flood producing rain. so far, there are no reports of deaths or injuries. but up and down the eastern seaboard from the carolinas to the jersey shore, preparations are under way just in case. state of emergency have been declared from south carolina to new jersey. meanwhile, flooding from a weather system not related to joaquin has already drenched coastal areas. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says even though joaquin is not expected to make landfall, flooding remains an issue. >> joaquin continues to be a very powerful hurricane. just been battering the bahamas. now just starting to make its northern turn and feel some influences from a dip in the jet stream coming down across

lift its way northward as it heads throughout the day today. the trend is farther off toward the east. from the hurricane center, taking it between bermuda and the east coast and eventually out to sea. still quite a bit of uncertainty here. you can't completely bank on out to sea track and the trends have certainly been encouraging when it comes to a landfall. that being said, flooding, a huge concern in the carolinas, up into virginia, eastern tennessee, and eastern georgia as we head through the next couple of days. a tropical plume of moisture reaching back from joaquin will be the focus here and we could see some huge rainfall totals and probably our single biggest concern when it comes to the weather the next few days. how much rain? local totals could be on order of 10 to 15 inches in south carolina and north carolina. if that happens, we are talking about historic flooding so everyone should be prepared for that potential outcome over the next two days.
