>> i'm chris mckinnon. it's friday, october 2nd. hurricane joaquin settled in right over top of the bahamas. the heavy rain and storm surge is causing major damage. as for the east coast, virginia and new jersey already declaring states of emergency in anticipation of this storm. danielle niles is here with us now with more on a forecast. i am wondering if anything changed overnight. >> if you haven't watched, the track has shifted east. the hurricane is still a category 4 storm right now. moving to the west slowly over the bahamas right now at only 3 miles per hour. slowing down and preparing to make that northward turn. it will likely curve toward bermuda. it may take a curve back towards the west but anticipated to curve to the northeast out to sea. big shift towards the east. the cape and island still in

we'll have more on joaquin. it's cool, wet, and chilly. we've got a little bit of rain out there this morning. temperatures, 47 in worcester. we'll be staying in the low to mid-50s threw the day today. the light rain does extend back up to the south shore and there will be pockets of rain that continue at times through the after noon. minor coastal flooding again today. we have to talk about the weekend. i'll have the details for you coming up in just a bit. >> all right, danielle. shooter of a college campus. police say his name is chris, harper mercer and he's 26 years old. >> we start with danielle nottingham, who's in oregon for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. this shooting has sent shock waves through this community and no one knows why a 26-year- old armed with several guns walked into a classroom and shot several students. hundreds of mourners held candles and said prayers for the victims of thursday's mass shooting at umpqua community college. >> there is an active shooter at ucc. >> reporter: several people were killed, others wounded when a gunman identified by authorities as 26-year-old chris harper mercer opened fire in the classroom.

the incident sent the small campus into lockdown. >> i found out from my dad calling me. we weren't even notified. >> reporter: the suspect who died in a gun battle with police had four guns, including a rifle and body armor. he allegedly also blogged about violence, including the recent on-air murders of two journalists in virginia. mercer's father was visibly distraught when interviewed by reporters. >> obviously, it's been a devastating day for my family. >> may god bless those who were killed today. may he bring comfort to their families. >> reporter: they tried to determine a motive. they are calling on the media not to use the suspect's name but focus on those who lost their lives instead. once again, president obama

tougher gun laws, andthe president also called on voters to force that change. danielle noting him, wbz news. chris and kathryn, back to you. >> thank you very much for the update this morning. as danielle mentioned, a very frustrated president obama calling for the tougher gun laws says americans are shootings. >> it does not capture the heart ache and grief and anger that we should feel, and it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in america next week or a couple of months from now. >> despite the string of recent mass shootings, congress has not seriously debated tougher gun laws since the sandy hook shooting tragedy when they failed to implement universal background checks. >> many local schools train for a violent attack including the

possibility of an active shooter. bree sison is here now with a look at campus security in our area. >> president obama said in that speech that responses to mass shootings had become routine. that's the case, unfortunately, for community colleges in new england, not unlike the one in oregon. at middlesex community college, the dean assessed school threats the day after the virginia tech massacre in 2007. they hold active shooter drills, plan for an emergency management team and staff mete police officers. they have resource officers working to identify potential problems. >> we get flagged if there's any sort of disturbing writing or something a teacher didn't care about in the classroom. they file these reports. we have a computer program that takes that information and recognizes trends. >> middlesex says communication

safety, they are paying attention to student behavior and staff members and people just passing through campus. sadly, they fully acknowledge that no one is immune from this type of violence. >> stay with wbz both on air and online for the latest on the oregon campus shootings. we'll more coming up at 5:00. also developing this morning, the taliban is claiming responsibility for shooting down a u.s. transport plane. the c-130 crashed near the afghanistan/pakistani border. we continue to monitor hurricane joaquin's track. people along the massachusetts coast are preparing for whatever the storm may bring. south shore residents are securing their homes, installing storm windows, and scituate emergency vehicles are already in place just in case.

>> we're already sounding our emergency plans now to get resources and low jestics that we have -- logistics that we have to get ready. >> the south shore was already dealing with rough tides yesterday afternoon. a second person in massachusetts has died from the west nile virus. health officials say she is a 90-year-old woman in suffolk county who likely contracted the virus in the area. this morning, dcf is making changes just one day after the governor says the agency dropped the ball and is partially to blame for a little girl's death in foster care. in that report released yesterday, the governor says the foster home never should have been approved and that the foster mother lied about a boyfriend with a troubling past who lived at the house. the home was also overcrowded. dozens of 911 calls were logged to the address. >> i also believe that fitching those systemic problems is

something i call grunt work and grit. i wish i could buy myself six months where we just spend time focusing on this thing and where nothing else happens, okay? we're not going to get that. >> dcf says two agency employees have been re assigned and that avalena probably died of heat stroke. an autopsy has not determined a baby's cause of death. a boy was found unresponsive at a family shelter and dcf says they can't comment until a cause of death is determined. today, the attorney general will be advising on opioid abuse. this is one day after hillary clinton spoke at substance abuse forums. she says abuse often starts with prescription drugs.

i want to direct the fda to take a better lack and do a much better job to determine who should receive she's doses and for how long. >> and investigating the security of hillary clinton's private e-mail server, but the presidential hopeful did not comment on that yesterday. a true patriots fan making a sacrifice to his team. >> dunkin' donuts closing some stores, but will it impact us here in massachusetts? we'll let you know. >> a suspect is under arrest in a decades old cold case.

out of that cone of uncertainty. not to say that joaquin won't make a close enough pass. you'll notice that change, that big shift, especially since this time yesterday morning. joaquin will be gradually weakening as it makes that northward turn over the next several days. we'll keep you posted on that. in the meantime, yes, it's a cool, raw feel. over 30 miles per hour at boston right now, gusting close to 40 on the vineyard and nantucket. there is a wind advisory up for the south coast, cape and islands until 11:00 a.m. saturday. it's in effect until 3:00 p.m. in nantucket for gusts as high as 50 miles per hour. the coastal flood advisory, guess what, it's up again today. for minor coastal flooding all the way from the north shore to the cape and islands, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. today. high today is two hours either side of -- high tide is two hours either side of that that

we experienced yesterday. we do have rain out there this morning. it's generally light back down to the cape. seeing pockets of rain and temperatures only in the upper 40s to lower 50s. pretty much what you see is what you get. we may come up by a few degrees this afternoon. the eastern seaboard separate from joaquin, seeing flooding rains to be an issue in the next few days of the carolinas. for us, though, look, the rain fills back in. the farther north you go, a better chance of it staying dry. a lot of us in and out of the periodic rain. not concerned with any flooding but light to moderate pockets here's your saturday. notice through the morning and afternoon, pockets of showers, areas of drizzle, not the best looking day. i do think we'll be able to squeak out some dry periods. weekend. there will still be clouds around but notice no green on the map. so we may get an early morning shower and then it's mostly dry on our sunday.

this morning now as a category 4 storm but it could grow stronger heading up the eastern seaboard. the residents in massachusetts are bracing just in case the storm impacts us. it is expected to reach cuba, republic. luckily it looks like it will be trending out eastward. an arrest in a decades old cold case. >> the victim, a tufts grad. >> reporter: in the summer of 1992, she was on top of the world. lena bruce had just become the first black woman to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering at tufts university. >> had she been allowed to grow into a successful woman, there's no telling what she could have accomplished. >> reporter: that july, shes what bound, sexually assaulted, and murdered in her south end apartment. 23 years later, a dna break. a grand jury indicted career criminal james witkowski of

murder. >> at the time of her murder, he had only a minor record of larceny-related offenses, and there was nothing to link him to the crime or crime scene. >> reporter: the 42-year-old already an inmate at the house of corrections, matched dna samples and other evidence retrieved from the crime scene. >> inside that wallet was one slip of paper. it was tested and revealed one fingerprint. it matched to james witkowski's left thumb. >> reporter: investigators don't believe lena bruce ever met her attacker. in fact, they think witkowski was a complete stranger. lena bruce's parents passed away before learning of an arrest, but the 23-year-old's legacy lives on each year through a college scholarship in her name. >> we never forget. you know, it might take us some time. >> reporter: julie loncich, wbz news. ted cruz will fund raise
