memories of hurricane sandy is still fresh in their minds, and that is the big story today. will it or will it not? >> danielle was just saying you have new information this morning that just came in. >> so each day, you guys, the track has been shifting farther to the east. that trend continues. so in this case, look at what happens. i zoomed out the view. joaquin is starting to take the turn to the northwest. notice the track now. it curves to the northeast. it does make a little jog northwestward just a touch then curves out to sea. nonetheless, the cone of uncertainty, we would certainly feel effects from joaquin, although it would not appear to be a direct hit either way. no matter how you cut it, we'll be feeling the effects of surf and wind currents picking up.

periods of rain separate from joaquin. we have pockets of rain out there this morning generally when you get back south of town. 52 in boston right now, notice pockets of light rain. so i'm not concerned with flooding from this. so i'll just slow you down along route 6 and stretching back towards the south coast of bristol and plymouth county. where do we go from here? periods of rain will fill back in up towards the mass turnpike today, and we don't get out of the low to mid-50s for a high temperature. minor coastal flooding again for the early afternoon high tide. we'll take you up for the weekend. good morning, robi. happy friday. >> good morning. pretty quiet out there. let's look at the map. the accident is out in worcester 290 westbound at hope avenue, exit 10. chris, kathryn?

now to a developing story. a community in mourning today as we learn more about the person who opened fire on a college campus in oregon, it happened in the community of roseburg. of portland. cbs news is report the shooter is 26 -- reporting the shooter is 26-year-old chris harper mercer. >> several are dead and many are fighting for their lives. bree? >> reporter: a witness says the gunman walked into a writing class and asked students to stand and state their religion others report hearing gunfire through class walls and scattering from the building as fast as possible. trying to make sense of it investigators are looking at the trail the suspect left behind, particularly online. a myspace page shows him holding a gun with a caption that reads "me holding a rifle. poi "other photos and

descriptions appear to glorify the irish republican army. president obama delivered a speech he's delivered many times before. >> there is a gun for roughly every man, woman, and child in america, so how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer? >> reporter: the sheriff in roseburg, oregon,a staunch gun rights advocate. he refused to say the shoot's name saying he wouldn't give him credit. he appeared to blog about recent high-profile shooting saying "it seems like the more people you kill, the more you are in the spotlight." >> bree, thank you very much. now to a developing story this morning. the taliban is taking credit for the deadly crash of a u.s. military transport plane.

passengers were killed when it went down near the pakistani border. the cause is under investigation. turning to hurricane joaquin know. people across the massachusetts coastline are making sure that they are ready for the storm but could have problems even before the storm gets here. susie steimle is live with more on those preparations. good morning, susie. >> reporter: good morning, chris. we're live along the seawall in scituate where the wind is punishing. we're tucked right next to a house so we have a little bit of cover from the storm that's going on right now so don't let the live shot fool you. if you look at the water from the seawall, you can see how rough this is. joaquin. this is the storm before the hurricane could come so they could really be facing a one- shore. they are prepared for that. this is an area that has seen a lot of storms. yesterday. we have video for you of

preparations going on in this area. a lot of high tide. actually, some of the highest tide that they've seen because of the super moon this week. they are hoping that that subsides before joaquin comes in this direction. people have spent a lot of time. the fire department made a bunch of reverse 911 calls yesterday. we caught up with them about that. >> we're always plotting our emergency plans now to get resources ready now. >> reporter: so they are adopting the standard storm mentality here on the south shore. hope for the best but prepare for the worst. they are hoping the storm takes a turn out to sea but misses them completely. for now, we're live in

scituate, susie steimle, wbz news. this morning, dcf is making changes after the governor accused the agency of dropping the ball in a little girl's death. the governor says the foster home never should have abouten approved to take care of 2- year-old avalena and the home was crowded. dozens of 911 calls have been called to the address. and new information about a painy in lynn. an autopsy has not determined the cause of death. the boy was found in a family shelter and died sunday. dcf says they can't comment on the case until a cause of death hack determined. a drill begins at 7:00 and goes until 1:00. passengers will see smoke and a large emergency vehicle response but again, this would

ted cruz will fund raise in boston today before heading to new hampshire. cruz will visit boston's union club for a fund-raiser and then it's off to the fair. he will be in town tonight and tomorrow morning. hillary clinton spoke at a substance abuse forum. she says abuse often starts with prescription drugs. >> this is a vicious downward spiral, and i'm going to direct the fda to take another look and do a much better job at seeing who should receive these drugs in what doses for how long. >> in the meantime, the fbi is confirming it is investigating the security of hillary clinton's personal server. your friday morning. the tragedy in oregon has a lot of people talking about a new

welcome back at 5:12. we're looking back at scituate coast. bracing for whatever hurricane joaquin is sending their way. it's churning through the bahamas, but now with all of the rainfall, many people along the east coast are bracing for devastating rain. maryland, new jersey, north carolina, and virginia are already under a state of emergency. the good news is that we are hoping that this thing tracks to the east. >> better safe than sorry, right? a lot of people are talking about hurricane sandy and the after-math and fallout from that. so it's best to be prepared, right? >> absolutely. danielle niles has a check of the forecast and a look at joaquin and where the hurricane is headed now. >> the latest update from the national hurricane center has now the motion of joaquin to the northwest.

very slowly at 3 miles per hour, but yesterday, it was moving west-southwest and southwest. so it's now starting to make that turn. a massive storm just battering the bahamas. 130 mile-per-hour winds gusting higher. joaquin is going to stay a major hurricane likely for the next couple of days. the latest track is passing west of bermuda as we head sunday into monday. weakening to a category 2 at that point. there is still a cone of uncertainty. it could come to the cape. if that were the case, that would be transitioning from a hurricane to a tropical storm at that point. if it did come farther west, particularly the cape and island, we'd have to monitor for wind impact into the start of next week. overall overwhelming trend has been farther to the east. either way as it makes its closest pass, we'll be feeling

the rip currents and building swells and seas. we've already seen building seas with the onshore wind gusting between 20 and 35 miles per hour, even higher on nantucket. we have a wind advisory that's up for the south coast, cape and island through the day today until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning that lasts until 3:00 p.m. for occasional wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. the building seas, onshore wind and leftover high tide. you know the drill. coastal flood advisory up at the coastline during the day today for minor coastal flooding and splashover. high tide comes up generally right around 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. so we'll watch that. start. we have pockets of light rain along route 3 back down to the cape and islands. upper 40s in worcester. notice the steadier rain is focused in the southeast part of the state. we may all get into some of today. it's all thanks to the front that came through us yesterday

and now stalled off shore. the rain will be turned back northward during the day. the reason, too, people in virginia back down through the carolinas or on guard, separate rain. that will be the headline in terms of flooding that will days. notice the northern edge comes afternoon today. i'm not concerned with flooding, but we'll have wet times. this is overnight tonight. the rain continues, tapering off tomorrow morning, but there will still be pockets of light rain around. tomorrow afternoon, light rain, scattered showers, pockets of drizzle, certainly not a good, fall day. improvement. this is the map on sunday. notice it's a little green in dry. i would not be surprised to get a couple of breaks of sunshine that may come out as we head into sunday afternoon. weekend days. rainfall amounts through the

day into tomorrow morning. could be two or more inches in nantucket. it's generally 1 to 2 here and the amounts will taper off quickly the farther north you head. less than a half inch when you get over the border in southern new hampshire. today's highs, low to mid-50s. not much change. same for tomorrow. we could come up near 60 on cape cod and on sunday, upper 50s and low 60s will do it for us. it's a cool, raw stretch the next couple of days. joaquin makes its closest pass on sunday. we'll watch to see if that pass goes farther west. traffic and weather together, robi. >> should i be rocking the rain pants tonight for friday night football. >> not terribly fashionable but you have to do what you have to do. >> that's right. i want to be comfortable and dry.

290 westbound at hope avenue is exit 10. total traffic network says it's early so we're not seeing a backup yet. this morning, the nation is once again left dealing with a deadly school shooting. >> rather than blaming our country's gun problems, we need to take a closer lack at pop culture in this morning's commentary. >> reporter: good morning, in his remarks last night of the latest atrocity involving a heavily armed shooter, president obama was visibly appalled, as well he might be. while his outrage was justifiable and litany of disgraceful facts was correct, the president's speech did miss some important points. for instance, wall he acknowledged we don't know much about the shooter yet, "we collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction," comparing the failure to have uniformly tough gun control laws unfavorably with the action we take to

protect people from bad weather, but what if this was a terrorist act? what if the guns and ammo used came from outside the country? i suspect many people would then balk at accepting collective guilt over the choices made by one der ranged person just as they reject responsibility for people who drive recklessly on the roads flood zones. the president's frustration of the intransigeance of the gun lobby is completely understandable but i aed like to hear more about the violence that permeants our country and murder is cool that oozes out of our video games, movies, tv shows, and ipods. the nra may make it easier for creeps to arm up, but popular culture helps propel them to having the weapons to using them. laws are a crucial part of imposing order on a society but

good morning. welcome back. it is friday, october 2nd. glad you are here with us. i'm kathryn hauser. >> i'm chris mckinnon. we're talking weather. of the forecast. hi, danielle. >> i want to bring you that first, guys. the category 4 storm still battering the bahamas. it's made the move to the northwest, very slowly, 3 miles per hour right now. the latest track of joaquin brings the storm to the north still as a major hurricane over the next couple of days passing west of bermuda and taking a curve out to sea. still a cone of uncertainty brings it out. we'll have bigger implications mainly on the cape and islands but the overwhelming trend has been to curve joaquin out to sea, making its closest pass to us as we head into late monday

so we'll keep you posted on the latest. we have a high look at the high resolution. you'll notice the south shore back edge marshfield, north pembroke, halifax bridgewater into the light rain. temperatures won't be getting out of the 50s today. watch what happens to the rain, too. it comes back northward during the late morning and midday, so expect periods of rain, light to moderate at times right into the evening. the farther inland you go, we might get a light rain. we'll take you out through the weekend coming up. let's get you on the roads. traffic and weather together. hi, robi. >> reporter: danielle, we still have an issue west of boston. it was a truck accident last night in worcester. the cleanup has two lanes closed. 290 westbound at exit 10 starting to see minor slowdowns out there right now. chris and kathryn? now to a developing story

grief counselors on hand at a community college in oregon. the scene of yesterday's deadly mass shooting. nine people were killed as well as the gunman who first opened fire. >> and their sense of safety as you can imagine, shattered. danielle nottingham joins us live from roseburg. good morning, danielle. >> reporter: good morning. the shooting has left this small, rural community in shock. still, no one knows why a 26- year-old armed with several guns walked into a classroom and shot several students. hundreds of mourners filled stewart park well past midnight holding vigil and saying prayers for thursday's victim as of the mass shooting at umpqua community college. >> there is an active shooter at ucc. >> reporter: several were killed and others wounded when

the gunman identified by authorities as chris harper mercer opened fire sending the small campus into lockdown. >> we weren't even notified. i found out from my dad calling me. >> reporter: the suspect who died in a gun battle with police had four guns including a rifle and body armor. he allegedly blogged about violence including the recent on-air murders of two journalists in virginia. distraught. >> obviously it's been a family. >> reporter: president obama prayed for the victims' families. >> may god bless the families of those who were killed today. may he bring comfort to their families. >> reporter: the college campus and parking lot was cleared as they trayed to determine a motive. they are calling on the media not to use the suspect's name but focus on those who lost

their lives instead. once again, president obama called on congress to pass tougher gun laws. the president also called on voters to push that change. live in roseburg, oregon, danielle nottingham, wbz news. chris, kathryn, back to you. >> danielle, thank you for the update. we appreciate it this morning. many local schools train for violent attacks on campus, including the possibility of an active shooter. >> let's get to bree with a closer look at campus security right here in our area. bree? >> reporter: chris, kathryn, president obama said in his speech that responses to mass shootings have become routine. that's the case for some community colleges in new england. at middlesex community college, their deans joined a law enforcement group that assesses school threats the day after the virginia tech massacre in 2007. they hold active shooter drills and staff an armed local police officer on campus.

though, the resource officers working to identify a potential problem. >> we get flagged if there's any kind of disturbing writings that occur or something a teacher didn't care about in a classroom. they file these reports, and we have a computer program that takes that information and recognizes trends. >> reporter: middlesex says communication is key and when it comes to safety, they are paying attention to not only student behavior but also staff members or people passing through campus. sadly, they fully acknowledge that no one is immune to this kind of violence. kathryn, back to you. a warning for boat owners, whether we get a direct hit or not, the essex police department says get your boats out of the water while you can. wednesday's rain caused widespread flooding both on and off the water. as we reported, a swampscott man drowned trying to save his boat after it broke from its

boat owners baton down the hatches, homeowners are securing windows and doing whatever they can to get ready. the new york police department is making major changes when it comes to use of force by its officers. this comes after tennis star james blake was tackled by an officer who thought he looked like a suspect in taye credit card -- suspect in a credit card fraud case. now they will document every encounter with the public. apparently not everyone runs on dunkin'. >> coming up, why the coffee chain is closing 100 storesp. >> and it's a family affair as the newest hot spot opens. >> a lot of reports coming in with temperatures running in the 40s and 50s right now. let's check in bruce mcdonald in uxbridge says 40 degrees.

i had the heat on in my car, danielle, i don't know about you. >> did you have the heat on? >> i did. >> did you pop the seat heater on? >> no, i didn't. >> i had the heat on low, too, because i had to defraught. we're in the pattern, you guys, where we're not getting out of the 50s. a lot of people are asking about foliage that was delayed a little with the warmth and dry conditions as well. however, northern new england is starting to peak with pops of color here up and down the mountains with high color back into vermont, the mountains of maine. i don't know about you, but i've been seeing colors pop in southern new england, too. we typically don't peak until the end of october. big weather story joaquin. category four hurricane. 130 mile-per-hour winds. its motion is now 3 miles per hour. obviously joaquin is moving

really slow, but going to take that turn to the north and northeast here will likely pass west of bermuda as a strong hurricane weakening from category 3 to 2. i think we still need to be on guard here. the cape and islands especially because even though joaquin has shifted east, official track from the national hurricane center there is still this cone of uncertainty. so if joaquin were to track a little farther towards the west, we'll have bigger implications here in southern new england. no matter where it tracks offshore. we're still talking about building seas, rip currents and high surfs over the next few days. winds are gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour. over 30 on the vineyard and nantucket. the wind advisory is up through the day today until tomorrow morning. lasts longer until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow on nantucket. so same outcome as yesterday afternoon's high tide.

again today with a coastal flood as of advisory in effect effect. the coastal high tide around most communities. minor coastal flooding and splashover all the way to the outer cape. start. we're at 52 in boston right now. pockets of light rain around route 3 to the cape cod canal and outer cape. kind of the northern extent is back toward pembroke, abington. this is not a flooding concern. this is just your general light rain but the issue is it is going to move northward during the day today. it's all because of the same front that stalled off our coastline. so it's separate from joaquin, but this is the front that's stalling out and we'll bring periods of heavy rain that will bring moderate to major flooding for parts of the carolinas here in the next several days. for us, the rain moves northward. during the late morning and midday it's up to boston. notice it comes to the mass/new

of showers into southern new hampshire. the steadiest rain along and south of the pike will continue overnight tonight. here's our saturday. so areas of rain in the morning. afternoon, still pockets of rain. areas of drizzle as we head into the evening. so admittedly, tomorrow is not looking like the best day. i do think there will be improvements on sunday. notice not a lot of gray on the map sunday afternoon. there will be some breaks of sunshine but a cool chilly feel with temperatures only running in the 50s to around 60. projected rainfall could see 2 or more inches of rainfall through the day today, tonight into tomorrow morning. the amounts will taper off grammatically the farther north you go. this afternoon then, have the wet weather gear, 54 degrees. we're 52 right now. we're coming up on a couple of degrees. areas of rain cool dropping into the upper 40s. highs tomorrow don't get out of the mid-50s. there will be areas of scattered showers, drizzle and the northeast wind gusting at the coast. 50 miles per hour early on the

so mother-in-lawer coastal flooding will be the story the next several days for the high tide cycles. watching joaquin for the closest path to us late monday and then the sun is back out. we go 65 to 70 through the middle part of next week. traffic and weather together. how's it looking? >> that darned cone of uncertainty. i want to see what that looks like, by the way. there's no uncertainty with the traffic. awful. slowdowns and breakdowns to tell you about right now. right now, a broken down car blocking the shoulder just before route 16. looks like a tire changer there. to the south, the expressway heavy from the split to furnace brook. 128 southbound boggs down between route 37 to the split. to the north, 93 southbound is sluggish between 495 and 133. massachusetts is preparing nor whatever hurricane joaquin may bring to us. >> here are your top stories on this friday morning.

college in oregon is identified mercer. he died in a shoot-out with police. nine other people died in the away. the shooter demanded people state their religion before he pulled the trigger. coming up at 6:00, the proactive approach new england schools are taking to connect the dots when they receive threatening information. i'm susie steimle live along the seawall in scituate where the south shore is preparing for a one-two punch of storms. first, this weekend's storms which brings with it heavy winds and a coastal flood advisory. then next, what hurricane joaquin could bring to the south shore. its path is still uncertain but residents are readying themselves any how. we'll show you how coming up in about ten minutes. susie steimle, wbz this
