we have a team of reporters covering it all tonight. looks like a miss here at this point. >> it does at this point. certainly encouraging trends here. watching the latest updates from the hurricane centers some new information coming in and this is where we stand here. it has begun it's turn after churning in place for the 24-36 hours. it has now started to move. the signs continue to point farther to the east. that trend being out to sea. are we completely in the clear yet? i would say no to that. is close enough where you have a large powerful hurricane even if it is a few hundred miles offshore. we want to keep a progress on it. latest stat have weakened just a touch. now moving north at 7. that is a little bit faster than this afternoon. that will continue. here is that latest updated track. it is working it's way between that gap right there.

still a few hundred miles away from there. it is close enough where you discount. all the trends have been joaquin. we have a huge area of high pressure building across canada. between the two. that will keep the wind blowing from new england down all the way to south carolina. that produces flooding and erosion. >> even though it is a unlikely it will make landfall here the storm is expected to make a mess in the mid-atlantic. >> they could all see some flooding. now to the latest in north carolina. >> we are dealing with strong wind and rain but there is good news. officials here today knead call

that an evacuation -- made the call that an evacuation isn't necessary. you are right, they are expecting some difficult conditions over the next few days. the waves are crushing in virginia beach as a powerful rainstorm makes it ways up the coast. . >> almost all the models in agreement now. it is a northward movement well away from the u.s. coast. >> the category hurricane is straight day. moisture from the storm is causing the heavy rainfall along the east coast. streets are flooding in ocean city, maryland. on the jersey shore bull dozers created sand piles to act as barriers just in case.

concern is coastal -- north coastal erosion. you can see how it can wash away what is left of the beach barrier even though it is a lined with massive sandbags. >> no one wants this beach to wash away. no one wants these restaurants behind it to flood out. >> the flooding could continue through the weekend. >> and officials here expect the worst of joaquin will move through here on sunday and then into monday. of course the bahamas has been dealing with it now for days. the coast guard is looking for a container ship that has 33 crew members on board there and they are not able to locate them. back to you. >> thank you. here in new england we are keeping a close eye on the coast. winds and waves are already pounding some of the shore communities.

could intensify as joaquin moves north. >> that is the question, what could the residdal affects of the hurricane be. the waves have been putting on a good show gone day. this is the spot where they typically -- again today. this is the spot where they jump up here. residents admit they are still watching the forecast. it is part of the prewinter precaution in marsh field. moving in concrete barriers to board up summer time beach openings and support crumbling seawall. the forecast has moved up the schedule. >> it looks like it will be going out to sea but looks like there will be some rough surf with high tide so we like take precaution. >> residents with homes perched right on the ocean are still watching joaquin.

this as we are learning more about the heros of that day. chris martinez has the latest from roseburg, oregon. >> the expect motive here remains unclear still at this hour. we now know the gunman had a lot of weapons. he had a lot of m am -- ammunition and body armour. >> investigators so much searched -- searched the apartment he shared with his mother. cbs news has learned he left a note suggesting he may have been depressed and angry. >> this is for an active shooter. >> the shooter killed 9 people and wounded 7 others in a rampage at umpqua community college yesterday. >> 7 weapons were recovered at the shooter's residence. >> some of the surviving victims

three of the most seriously hurt were taken to a hospital in eugene >> there is a gofundme page for chris mintz who tried to stop the gunman in his tracks. he tried to block the door to keep the gunman from going in. he was shot five times. >> they are friends with a 19-year-old victim who's in surgery a second day for her injuries. >> she just told me how much she has wanted to go to college. she goes back for her first [ crying ] >> counselling is now being offered for all of those affected in the community. community college is closed today. it will stay that way at least through the weekend and we are week. back to you. >> you can stay with cbs boston

tonight at 6:00 some tough talk from president obama last night on gun control. it looks like we have heard that speech before. will anything get done? we will take a look at that at 6:00. break high school, they are forfeiting a football game in the wake of an incident involving under class men. they learned a week ago that they got naked and performed drills on the 50 yard line. the superintendent insists there were no adults involved, that the students did this on their own free will. the school system decided it was conduct unbecoming and forfeiting the game. individual punishment may come next. it is still unclear whether there could be criminal punishment we have developing news tonight, two airmen from hanscom air force base are among 11 americans killed in a military air crash. >> tonight we now know that the two airmen killed were stationed at hanscom air force base but

were not from new england. they have not yet released their names. they said the other four where from texas. they were all -- were from texas. they were all serving in afghanistan. their plane crashed shortly after take off. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. the air force today expressed their deep condolences to the families. >> as you can imagine this is a devastating day for the united states air force and for hanscom air force base. our hearts are heavy with sorrow as we grieve with and for the familys of these brave airmen. there are no words that could adequately express the deep sadness we feel at this time. >> the taliban is claiming responsibility for shooting down plane but u.s. military officials say that is unlikely. back to you. still to come, it is being called yelp for people. >> coming up controversial new rating system app that gets personal.

wind coming on shore. there will be some dramatic images all through this weekend. it starting it's turn now moving northward at 7 miles per hour. the central bahamas have taken such a hit from this. most of the population, other impact. hopefully not too much damage. 125 mile per hour winds is now going to accelerate off to the north and west and it looks like it stays off to sea. the reason they this has ban been -- been a difficult forecast, the stirring [ indiscernible ] you think it would just create it's own destiny and that is not the case. the trough is now digging in.

see the flow of water vapor to the south. at the same time we are trying to time out this little area of low pressure. this will rotate over the north side of it. by the time that moves inland this kicks out and pushes the whole thing to out to sea. it will pro dice a lot of rainfall -- produce a lot of rainfall. for us we have rain streaming up the coastline. most of this is light to moderate. the heaviest rainfall where some towns are now up over 5 inches of rainfall for the week. winds have been a big issue. still gusting well over 30 miles per hour. there has been disruption to the ferries. you want to check with them throughout the course of that weekend first. wind advisories in affect till

south coast peak gusts could be as high as 50 miles per hour. throughout day it gets a little bit dryer. enough dry air starts to wedge its way in. there's a chance here we will break into the sunshine. it is not a complete loss for this weekend. about a half inch to 1 and a half inches of additional rain here. we are also looking at another high tide cycle. the seas build 10-15 feet. all the rough water likely going to lead to some beach erosion. low temperatures tonight to the low 40s. we are looking at upper 40s to low 50s across the area tomorrow. very chilly tomorrow night. a little bit of spotty drizzle

but not much rainfall. sunday is now looking like the better day to be outside. some breaks of late day sun are possible here. here is your seven day. our temperatures rebound. the sun comes out and a quieter weather stretch. >> looking forward to that. take a look at this, this is a image of joaquin from space. they are flying in to get a better look its strength. >> the eye of a hurricane has experience. >> it is kind of intense. >> yeah, it is really like -- it has a weird feel to it. piece. he says a lot of research went into the creation inspired after katrina affected her friends and family on the gulf coast.

kes a surprising appearance in the city and gets up and close and personal with one fearless witness. you know the restaurants through the region, now they are making their culinary mark in boston. >> last night they walked the red carpet in the opening of the new restaurant near fenway park. paul is a well known chef. his famous brothers were there too with proud mom and while paul claimed he was going to eat ten burgers, mark said he could not indulge because he is training for a movie. that has to make you wonder what do the movie dose e -- movies to do -- do to you if you can't eat them and look like him. they are going into business together.
