eventually things start to improve. live look at doppler radar. drizzle, clouds, and a dark start here. light showers at best, but mainly drizzle showing up on live doppler radar. those areas of drizzle are moving slowly to the north and east. the winds are a factor today. gusts are strong up to 32 miles per hour in plymouth. a 37 mile-per-hour gust just reported now on martha's vineyard there. we have a wind advisory on the cape and island until 3:00 p.m. coastal flood advisory because of the high winds, and it looks like we'll have high tide between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. today leading to minor coastal flooding. beach erosion potentially, and areas such as hull could see minor flooding. we're keeping our eyes on hurricane joaquin. it's picking up speed moving to

that's great news for us. forecast models are lining up. it will be a cat 1 as it continues out to sea monday and tuesday. passing closely enough that we could see some of that high surf. kerry? >> all right, pamela. even though hurricane joaquin's churning out to sea, we're not entirely in the clear. strong winds, strong surf and heavy rains already battering the east coast. the now category 3 storm will have an impact here in massachusetts. on the south shore, concrete barriers are now in place to close up summer beach openings and support crumbling seawalls. we've got you covered all weekend. of course you can stay with us on wbz, on the air and online for the latest storm track and conditions. one story developing from the storm. the coast guard is still looking for a cargo ship

the 735 foot ship sounded a distress call thursday morning storm. it was taking on water and engines were down. there were 28 americans and 5 followish nationals -- polish nationals on board. a former catholic priest who raped an altar boy and spent ten years in prison will soon go free. as jim smith reports, not everyone believes he's no longer dangerous. >> ron was a monster to many. >> reporter: wayne still remembers what he once tried to forget. the first time he says the former priest abused him. a haverhill altar boy, he was about 10. the priest taking him and other boys to the swimming pool. >> i was the last one to change.

he made comments about me, my private parts, and i got kind of scared, ran out and jumped in the pool. on the way home, he had me sit next to him. while he was driving, he was fondling me. >> reporter: he's now being released, 13 years after being convicted of raping children. prosecutors say they have no choice but to release him because authorities say he's no longer dangerous. >> how would you feel? >> reporter: wayne got legal help, reaching out to attorney richard garabedi a. n. he got a financial settlement. >> there's no doubt in my mind based on his history and sexually molesting dozens upon dozens of children over decades that he will continue to sexually abuse children.

>> oh, without a doubt. >> reporter: his attorney did not return our calls. in haverhill, jim smith, wbz news. the swampscott high school football team is forfeiting today's game amid a hazing investigation. the school says five sophomores undressed in front of teammates and did drills in front of upperclassmen. participating in an event that includes students getting naked and being yelled at in a public park, the authorities say,not an example of treating all members of the school, community, with dignity and respect. some students may be punished individually. apologies and healing after a newly elected class president was targeted by racial slurs and text messages. his mother says she's satisfied with the resolution. >> reporter: it's been a long day for this family after an even longer week.

be able to learn from this and move forward. >> reporter: the six students involved have all been suspended. in lowell, julie loncich, wbz news this morning. this morning, we're waiting to learn the identities of those killed in a plane crash. two airmen were killed, among the six military personnel and five other americans who died when their c-130 transport plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport. >> this is a devastating day for the united states air force and hanscom air force base. our hearts of heavy as we grieve with and for the families of these airmen. >> the two men were not from new england. the tall la ban is claiming they shot the plane down, but the u.s. says that is unlikely. new this morning, a new hampshire driver is under

arrest, accused in a crash that sent his car into a home and his passenger to the hospital. police say 21-year-old jesse was drunk behind the wheel and speeding when he lost control of his car yesterday. the car hit several trees before plowing into a home at banks road and main street. his passenger was seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter. having your smartphone in the car can be a dangerous distraction. new technology can display messages on your windshield, but can it be done safely? we take a closer look. pamela? lots of weather watchers reporting dreary conditions out there with chilly temperatures and pretty strong winds. the wind speed of 22 miles per hour reported from denise in plymouth. kathy from worcester has a 14 mile-per-hour wind speed and winds are expected to guest up to 50 miles per hour in some spots. who could see some of the

it's starting to push away from the bahamas. good news compared to earlier this week, the forecast models are now aligning and looks like it will pass way out to sea. hundreds of miles off the coast but close enough that we'll experience high surf as well as the dangerous rip tides monday into tuesday. then the storm continues to weaken as it pushes off to the north and east there. live look at doppler radar. this drizzle, the clouds now the associated with joaquin. this is a stationary front that has been over us the last couple of days creating extremely heavy rainfall. record breaking rainfall 10 to 20 inches of rain. for us, we get the drizzle and light showers at best but not experiencing flooding issues. it could be worse. p.m. chance for an isolated, moderate shower or two. more drizzle overnight tonight

as well into sunday. very similar forecast where we will experience today. especially along the coast, the drizzle, the clouds hang around sunday afternoon. then we see breaks in the clouds farther inland and to the north there. wind gusts are strong at this time between 25, 35 miles-per- hour in many locations. this is all coming from the north and east. there is a wind advisory until 3:00 p.m. today for the cape and islands. the winds could gust up to 50 mile-per-hour there. with the strong winds pushing up the surf a little bit, and there is a coastal flood advisory coinciding with 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. minor coastal flooding to moderate coastal flooding. we could see beach erosion as well. temperature 50 in boston. 40s out there, lower 50s. not much of a change out there, either, up to 53 degrees at best. periodic rain chance, gusty winds throughout the day.

people accused him. be released. two airmen killed in a plane crash in afghanistan were from hanscom air force base. in all, six military personnel and five americans were killed when the c-130 went down after takeoff from jalalabad airport. the two men stationed at hanscom were not from new england but everyone on the base has access to grief counseling. the taliban claims it shot down the plane but the u.s. calls that unlikely. this morning, we know who the victims are in oregon. nine people gunned down by a fellow student. we're learning more about the hero who tried to stop the shooter. what we still don't know is the motive behind it. >> reporter: these are the faces of the nine people who lost their lives thursday in the umpqua community college

assistant english professor lauren slivine, 67, the oldest. 19-year-old sarah wanted to become a pediatric nurse and 20-year-old trevor was a member of the local fire and ems family. rebecca, lucas and cooper were the youngest. cooper's family released a statement to police. >> i don't know how we're going to move forward with our lives without him. our lives are shattered without repair. >> reporter: police say the shooter was an army boot camp dropout who was enrolled in the english class where the shooting happened. investigators recovered 13 weapons and a letter from the shooter suggesting he may have been depressed and angry. corey who lives in a nearby building where the gunmen shot his sister. she survived. >> he started asking people to get up. asked my sister to get up. she didn't move, played dead. >> reporter: the clark sisters are friends with a 19-year-old who was shot five times. >> she got shot right here and went up through the front.

>> reporter: a steady stream of people lined up for hours to victims. paula ebben, wbz news this morning. the green line is back up and running after a tree forced service suspensions. you can see the overhead wires. the mbta shut down service for a time in order to cut down the tree and remove it. emergency workers at logan airport are sharpening their skills to handle a disaster. they took part in a drill yesterday simulating a plane crash on the runway with fire, injuries and evacuations. airports have to hold a drill like this every three years. u.s. attorney general loretta lynch is taking on the opioid epidemic here in massachusetts. yesterday in waltham, she spoke to hundreds at an opioid and

challenges and combat and this issue. >> opioid often begins with a family medicine cabinet. this is the source of so much pain as well as help for people. >> just last night, the state senate approved the measure encouraging health care providers to consider alternatives for easing patients' pain. it's what the patients noted in the medical file if they don't want to receive opioids. many may know october is breast cancer awareness month. the greenfield police department wants to unlock this. many replaced their silver handcuffs with pink ones and swifted the blue and white color pins to pink and white ones. "black mass" is not appropriate for kids with one notable exception. one boy is playing a key role in the film's most touching scene.

category 1. close enough to us that we'll still see the high surf and even the rip tides. then it starts to continue to move to the north and east and out of our area by wednesday, thursday, no affects in the weekend as it typically hits that area. for us, we're dealing with a stationary front. areas of drizzle, clouds, and cool temperatures. we cheap the drizzle in and a chance for an isolated shower or two throughout the rest of this afternoon. into this evening, too, the clouds hang around northern parts of new england with the best chance of seeing breaks in the clouds. we'll see an onshore flow giving us the chance for drizzle and fog along the coast sunday afternoon. farther inland, you might see bursts of sunshine. all of us by monday will see peeks of soon. wind gusts -- peeks of sun.

seawalls and clearing away loose branches. joaquin could still cause flooding up and down the coast concern. a former haverhill priest who pleaded guilty to raping an altar boy will be released. two experts testified that ronald paquin is no longer sexually dangerous, which means prosecutors were forced to withdraw their petition to have him committed indefinitely as a sexually dangerous person. although he was only convicted of one rape, several others accused paquin of sexual assault. he has been defrocked by the vatican. two airmen from hear son air force base were among those killed in afghanistan in a military plane crash. six military personnel and five other americans were killed. their names have not yet been released.
