>> this is savage! . a cargo ship missing after sailing right into a hurricane. weather making a mess of many traditional fall activities. new information about the oregon college massacre. we begin with breaking news. a lifeboat that was found is from the missing cargo ship. >> that ship with 33 people onboard sailed into an area being hit hard by the

hurricane. jim, four people from maine are among the crew. >>reporter: that does appear to be the case tonight, and family members are heading to the state of florida to wait for word. right now the ship is still missing. >> the search took us near the storm. >>reporter: a crew flew directly toward the hurricane, missing cargo ship. they've now found a life ring, but no sign of the vessel. >> the winds were in excess of 400 knots and it was challenging. >>reporter: according to multiple reports, at least four of the people onboard are from maine, including the captain from windham. the coast guard said the

conditions, sending a distress signal saying the ship had lost power and was taking on water. >> there's between 20 and 30- foot waves out there. >>reporter: also reported to be onboard, crew from rockland, maine. the ship left jacksonville and by friday. the question is, why did they even go to see given the building hurricane. >> the conditions were, as he saw them, very favorable and he was confident. the ship was doing well. >> a short time ago we were told that the life ring was discovered about 75 miles northeast of the cargo ship's last known location. the search teams are taking chances themselves, flying as low as 500 feet above the

they'll get back at the search again sunday morning. we're live in the satellite center, jim smith, wbz news. >> we'll take a look at this. powerful wind gusts in plymouth today. the hurricane is thousands of miles away, so why is it so windy here? >> there's a big strong high pressure center to the north and lower pressure to the south, but not really directly hurricane. it's just because it's been low pressure and the big difference in a small area causing the wind here. when that storm gets closer to us, and it won't really get that close, it won't really cause any windsor rain here. it's still a category 4 storm,

it's going to be close to bermuda late tomorrow afternoon, and by then the winds should be down to 110, but it looks like it will cause damage there too. a hurricane warning is up on the island right now for a big stretch of bermuda. we're going to have big surf over the next few days to contend with. more in the forecast coming up shortly. strong winds today causing trouble for people who do not take precautions. a large sailboat was thrown ashore in quincy. boaters are warned to secure their boats before a hurricane hits. power lines were brought down in brookline from dudley to lee that was closed for a while while they repaired the downed wires.

the rain and stormy weather weekend. we'll take a look at local businesses and fall festivals. >>reporter: when the pumpkin patch is nearly empty and only one customer getting a tractor ride, it puts a damper on business. >> this is the boom of our season and what keeps us going through the winter. >>reporter: a damp chilly stretch of weather is keeping away the crowds that usually fill the parking lot. in a six week window to pick apples and enjoy a farm full of fall activities, including a massive corn maze where today it would be easy to get lost. >> this is not the same atmosphere as it could have been, but we're still making the best of it. >>reporter: while apple picking is still the big attraction, a few pickers had the orchards to themselves. everything depends on the

weather. >> there's a short window of time for farmers to make their money for the whole season. >>reporter: here at the topsfield fair they have 11 days to draw a crowd. there were no lines at rides or just about any where at the fair, which for some regs, feeling the chill was a bonus. >> we're sort of used to the crowd so it was a nice treat not to have to stand in line or anything like that. >> weather definitely affects the fair, but the good thing is a couple of the bad days are behind us. >>reporter: hoping the soggy will turn to sunshine to bring the crowds back in. people have court dates on monday after a brawl in worcester.

where 500 people tried to rush in. they decided to close the show, and officers feared there would be a riot. officers deployed pepper spray to get the crowd moving. a crash sent a car into a hospital. police say he was drunk and speeding when he lost control of his car. it hit several trees before plowing into a home in a new hampshire area. new information on the deadly campus massacre. investigators are analyzing anote. >> the medical examiner has determined the cause of death of the shooter to be suicide. >>reporter: authorities now say chris harper died by his own hand, shooting and killing himself after exchanging gunfire with police.

>>reporter: the shooter was down ten minutes after the first call to 911. >> to the families, our hearts are with you. >>reporter: the gunman killed nine people from 18 to 67. a 16-year-old was injured. she lost her kidney. a girl sitting next to her said he singled people out according to their religion. >> he asked about their religion and if they were christian, he said they would see god soon. >>reporter: he wrote about feeling like a loser without a girlfriend, his hatred for black men and going out in a

blaze of glory. >> tonight we know the names of the two airmen from the air force base killed when their transport plane crashed in afghanistan. one american was from pensacola and another from georgia. grief counselors are being offered at the base. there was a bombing of a hospital in afghanistan run by the group doctors without borders. at least 19 people were killed in an air strike carried out by u.s. forces. three of the dead were members of the staff. the american commander said the strike was intended to hit taliban insurgents. boston police are releasing pictures of a person wanted in connection with a carjacking

back in august. a 20y six-year-old nurse had just finished her night shift and was parking when a man forced his way into her car. she did manage to get away and the man took off. police released these photos of a person of interest. if you recognize the man, they want to hear from you. let's turn to campaign 2016. bernie sanders is attracting huge crowds. he spoke on a number of issues, but some of the loudest applause came in response to his pledge to end income inequality. >> that is the economy that we are going to change. we're going to create an economy that works for the middle class and not just the 1 1 percent. >> earlier today he was in

water, effectively shutting down the city. >> we need to help people get through the next two days with no one getting hurt. >>reporter: the high waters are affecting parts of the city that don't generally flood. >> we have a little water on the streets, but this is a disaster. if you are coming downtown you need an inflatable boat in the trunk of your car. >>reporter: a coastal city and other parts of carolina has heavy flood and rain that keeps falling. >> this is something we didn't expect two days ago. >>reporter: here in norfolk water has yet to recede in areas, possibly setting the stage for serious flooding when more rain moves in over the next 24 hours.

next 24 hoursthere is the powerful storm, but it's in awakening mode right now. earlier there were winds of 150, and it's making its approach to bermuda. tomorrow. the only problem with this, how close is this track going to be? the model shows it curving a little bit, which may take the strongest winds west of bermuda, but they'll still get some winds and damage. will be weakening. high temperatures tomorrow should be a little higher than today, 55 to 58 degrees, but a few spots maybe a touch higher drier. there's a chance that sunshine
