on the tarmac after what quickly became a terrifying flight after word the pilot had passed away. the phoenix to boston plane was diverted to syracuse. passengers at first only told the pilot was sick. >> flight attendant come on fasten your see belts so forth. her voice was quivering. so i knew it was way beyond an illness. reporter: passenger photos and videos show the emergency operation, but most people on the plane did not realize how serious it was until later. >> they put tarps up so we couldn't see anything out the windows. the cops evacuated everybody away from the windows. when we got on our flight here four hours later they notified us he passed away. >> we had to wait for the body to be removed from the plane. it was pretty intense. reporter: a replacement crew eventually came onboard and airport. passengers said that original

extremely well especially the co-pilot who landed the plane with 154 people onboard. >> i think the airlines needs to be commended. i think whatever happened in know. that co-pilot did a great job i got to tell you. all of our lives was in his hands at that point. reporter: at this point the name of that deceased pilot is not being released. the airline is not specifying a cause of death simply saying that he had an illness of some type. jim smith wbz news. >> also developing tonight an amtrak passenger train derails in vermont. at least two cars went off the tracks injuring some passengers but things could have been much worse. paula evan is following the latest elements. reporter: a hundred people were onboard amtrak vermonter before it crashed just before noon today.

this northfield outside of month peel year. investigators say the train hit some rocks that fell onto the tracks from a ledge above sending a locomotive and passenger car over an embankment. three other cars went off the tracks but did not tip over. a freight train had traveled safely over the same tracks just hours earlier. passengers helped each other get out of the crash. >> felt something like it was a bump. next thing we knew we swerved to the left and to the right. and pretty soon it just stopped. >> saw the car in front of us come up this way that's when it went down the ditch. reporter: those who were hurt one person suffered serious injuries everyone else is expected to recover. by the way that railway take operates that stretch of track has had 54 accidents since 2006

including 14 derailments. paula ebben wbz news. thank you paula. we are assuming that the vessel had sank. >> that's sad news from the coast guard. the missing cargo ship with 28 americans onboard is now considered lost at sea and two of the sailors are graduates of mass maritime academy. that ship went missing off the bahamas in the 50-foot waves of hurricane joaquin. >> even though that ship is considered sunk they are holding out hope they will find survivors. jaime is live in jacksonville with the latest on this story. reporter: right here in jacksonville is where the el faro ended up leaving for puerto rico last week. the crew thought they would skirt a tropical storm but instead drove right into a category 4 hurricane. family members of the 33 people aboard the el faro are holding

guard says the cargo ship sank. crews are no longer looking for the boat. >> we've modified search efforts to focus on potential people in the water lifeboats and life rafts. reporter: the 790-foot ship lost power in heavy seas thursday and its crew radioed it was taking on water. marine researchers say there is a chance passengers could be found if they survive the violent waves. but time is running out. >> over time your search area simply gets bigger and bigger and i hate to say the odds of and less. reporter: one of el faro's two badly damaged. search crews also found a life ring and human remains inside one of the ship's survival suits. family members are gathering at this florida hotel about a half hour from where the boat launched last week. the red cross is also here. family members say they are too distraught to talk. but on sunday this mom remained optimistic. >> we've had folks who have been through this type of thing

before and have been rescued themselves that happened to be with us today. those types of things are really helpful and helps us to hold out hope. reporter: right now hope and each other are all they have. the president of tote maritime who owns the el faro did release a statement today saying the company is also holding out hope that survivors are found. the company will be meeting with families here in jacksonville later tonight. >> thank you jaime. tonight we are learning more about keith griffin and jeffrey ma tie as the two mass maritime graduates lost at sea. at 6:00 we'll take you tomas maritime to show you the training simulator they use to prepare for tough conditions. that story coming up on with news at 6:00. there are new developments in the bombing of a doctors without borders hospital in afghanistan. the u.s. now says it was afghan forces and not u.s. troops that requested the airstrike that killed 22 people.

claimed they were under attack by the taliban. now the aid agency is disputing that claim. mark phillips reports an investigation is underway. the question is no longer whether the n sf hospital was hit by u.s. airstrikes. the u.s. has admitted that. the question is how and why. doctors without borders which has run the hospital says both the government in kabul and the united states knew where it was and that the air raid continued even after they raised the alarm that the facility was being hit. the afghan government say taliban fighters were shooting from the hospital. director vicky hawkins says is a law. >> the comments coming from the of began government are absolutely outrageous. they are to an extent justifying the destruction of a fully functioning hospital. reporter: u.s. air force general john campbell says it

was afghan units called the strike in. >> after began forces called in for fire to support them. we have u.s. special forces that continue to train advise and assist at the tactical level. reporter: an investigation is underway but n sf said it's not good enough. this is an ish thaw goes beyond afghanistan it comes at a time when the u.s. has been accusing russia of i am precise targeting in syria. that makes it even more difficult to justify this. mark phillips cbs news london. >> a police officer is recovering after a violent confrontation. he was called to shirley street on the call. the man at that address threatened his wife then shot at police with a pellet gun. the man is in custody the officer who has a cut and upper body injuries is expected to be okay. we have breaking news in south carolina. new evacuations in the community of force rest acres that's near columbia. on top of all the torrential rain they have received a dam

broke and that's creating an even bigger disaster. national guard men are telling everyone to pickup and leave. we'll have much more from the ground in south carolina. turning to our weather it had been a gloomy stretch over the past few days and here's a live look at boston common tonight. bit of a chilly night but we will sai soon be seeing -- it's already nicer today. >> we're making some strides for sure. 58 degrees. wind out of the north 8 miles per hour. lot of clouds out there but we did at least top 60 degrees for the first time this month. it has been so cold to start october. here we are finally topping that 60-degree mark at noon been over a hundred hours. so we're on the right track. those clouds will start to break up from west to east. one place they will likely linger across the cape and islands overnight. we are starting to get clear two major storm systems joaquin

visible north of bermuda. there's this cut off low bringing tremendous rainfall. gradual clearing very chilly upper 30s lower 40s in the suburbs. our trend is up. we've got sunshine starting to move its way back in and several nice days on top of that. the timing for all this specific numbers how warm it will get coming up in a few minutes. thank you. to a dramatic scene at a mall in salem new hampshire. this driver tried to get away from police he didn't get very far. the officer tried to talk to the man behind the wheel of a white suv. he took off he only got a few feet before smashing into a parked car, a try tree and then a fire hydrant. he was arrested and faces drug and reckless driving charges. drivers get ready because massachusetts could soon be going hands freely. tomorrow lawmakers will debate a bill requiring drivers use a headset or bluetooth device if they are on the phone.

this new video tonight of a typhoon hitting southern china. the storm pin spining out an incredible tornado whipping up the sea destroying homes and businesses. four people have died in the storm including a fisherman. >> breaking right now at 5:00 evacuations are underway right now in south carolina where the rising floodwater is just too much for a small dam causing it to break. national guard telling people to pack up and leave immediately. that state is dealing with catastrophic flooding this kind of rain events has a one in 1,000 chance of ever happening again. desperate rescue operations are underway right now and more bad news. more rain is on the way. cbs has the latest from columbia. reporter: south carolina. reporter: floodwaters are receding in columbia, south carolina now leaving behind massive damage. a giant sinkhole practically swallowed this tax office while raging waters ripped apart

>> the community is strong, and it will be rebuilt, but it's going to take a long time. reporter: military choppers are flying looking for people who may still need help. over the weekend crews rescued hundreds of victims from fast moving floodwaters. the governor is urging residents in hard hit areas to stay indoors. >> this is not over. just because the rain stops does not mean that we are out of the woods. reporter: the rain and floods have left more than 40,000 people without drinking water. the state is setting up water distribution sites until the taps are flowing again with clean water. cbs news columbia, south carolina. just absolutely wild weather there. they say it hasn't been like in this in a thousand years. >> they are not out of the woods yet. >> thousand year rain event means it has one in one thousand chance in any year. we could have 5 years in a row 5,000 years it never happens in that time frame.

we weren't there a thousand years ago. maybe in the year 40 there was a huge flood in south carolina unbelievable pictures. look at these rain totals what had happened over the weekend. big plume of tropical moisture fed into wilmington north carolina. all areas saw over 20 inches of rain. how does that stack up for something we would see around here. one of these towns in south carolina has seen more rain in the past 72 hours than we have seen the entire year in the city of boston surrounding areas. that includes all the water that was in our snowfall in a record setting winter. unbelievable comparison if you can only imagine. 2 feet of rain over the course of a weekend. really bizarre set up here in the atmosphere. you've got joaquin spinning out to sea this is a deep upper level low spinning over south carolina that helped to focus a little tropical moisture from joaquin into south carolina. we call those at firework rivers. you hear that a lot in california. they can produce big rain amounts.

for us it's mostly been about clouds and clouds are starting to break apart tonight gradually. temperature wise it feels very much like okay:upper 50s to around 6 o. cool temperatures very chilly once those clouds depart we'll fall back down through the 40s. wouldn't be surprised to see upper 30s by tomorrow morning. slightly milder city of boston and toward the cape 50 for a low in hyannis. we're on the proper road to recovery an brighter skies. we're looking at warmer temperatures after that chilly start. mild we'll see highs in the upper 60s to around 70. after these last several days upper 60s are going to feel perfect. sunset is at 6:17. >> should be a dry and pleasant evening. the winds start to calm down much lighter out of the north tomorrow. 6 in boston. norwood up to 7 o. pittsburgh at 71. almost feel like summer after several days in the' 50s. we have another weak cold front

a mix of sun and clouds not expecting any rain with it. we'll bring in some cooler air again for thursday. tons of sunshine high pressure overhead. our next chance of showers won't arise until that area high pressure moves out for the end of the week andesine another cold front moves in on friday. this one will have lower moisture to work with. good chance of showers and maybe thunder as we head into the second half of friday but it should be gone by saturday morning which is the good news. temperature wise we're a few degrees on either sides of average all the way through the weekend. very typical october stretch. one thing you might have noticed there's really not a lot of fall color out there yet. trees here and there. we're not at the peak in northern new england very, very late in the season but starting with the good stuff in the berkshires. a few source on friday. we're back to the dry stuff. so it should be a good stretch to get around outside and in terms of additional rain we saw a good soaking last week. we'll probably go a little

>> moose mating season has begun in alaska. >> a man and his son found out they shot video of two bull moose fighting on a residential street in anchorage. a full on tackle there. they had to run to get out of the way. moose fairly do's i docile most of the time but when they are competing for a mate they can get pretty aggressive. >> living proof that you don't have to be big to be brave. >> this little french bulldog did not hesitate when two bears walked uninvited into his california. surveillance video on the home showed the tiny dog charging the bears and those bears hopped right back over that fence and out of the yard as quickly as possible. i have to imagine that bulldog has no idea how tiny, he's like bears. >> it was one against two. extra treats for him.

giving courage to the people who are afraid to come out to seek treatment. reporter: treatment patrick kennedy says gave him his life back and at the cost of breaking his family's code of silence he says it was worth it kristina haeger web site news. this is a shocking development for the new york yan he's on eve of the baseball playoffs. one of their starting pitchers has begun treatment for addiction to alcohol. c. c. sabathia is checking into a rehab center and will not play again this year. the 35-year-old saab sabathia won only 36 games. he earned $23 million this season he'll make 50 million over the next two years. sabathia released a statement saying it hurts me deeply to do this now but i owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right i want to take control of my disease i want to be a better man, father and player. kudos for him for being honest. obviously a distraction for the yankees. we have a lot still to come at

. we are following three big developing stories tonight at 5:30. an american airlines pilot dies while behind the controls of a red eye flight from phoenix to boston last night. that plane was diverted to syracuse new york where it did land safely. an a amtrak train derailed near vermont. one person lifted to the hospital. 6 others minor injuries. rock fell onto the tracks knocking a locomotive and passenger car down an embankment. three cars came off the track. coast guard says a cargo ship that sailed into hurricane joaquin has sunk. the el faro began taking on water last thursday. the search continues for the 33 crew members aboard including two graduates of the mass maritime academy. this is an emotional day for students teachers and staff
