lost control and crashed into hey home in cochituate last night. so far, no charges have been filed. also new this morning, a home in marlboro is damaged in an overnight fire. flames broke out at this home on versailles street. it reportedly started in the kitchen. no word, though, on any injuries. >> hope turning to fear for the family of 33 crew members lost down. >> the families of the missing are trying to stay positive. we are at mass maritime where some crew members trained. >> reporter: good morning. we now it was mechanical -- we now know it was mechanical

to lose power and get stranded. >> he'll be okay. i truly have to believe that. >> reporter: friends and family of the missing members of the el faro are holding hope. >> they'll make it. if there's any way to make it, they will make that. >> reporter: the coast guard revealed monday the ship sank in hurricane joaquin and it's now 3 miles underwater. 33 were on board, 28 were americans. two were mass maritime graduates. both have young families. >> doing a lot of wonderful work for the family of kingston. i'm just without words. >> reporter: tuesday marks five days since the ship lost contact. it's also the amount of time the coast guard is leave anyone stranded. they are hoping this well- trained crew knew how to survive. >> in my heart, i believe if there's anything that we will

because of family reasons. she resigned from the t in april over the agency's response to winter delays and cancellations. we're learning more about the pilot who died during a mid-air emergency during a boston-bound flight. the co-pilot kept his cool and made sure it landed safely. good morning, bree. >> reporter: michael johnston of utah was at the control of the american airlines flight when his family believes he suffered a heart attack. >> we have a medical emergency. the captain is incapacitated. >> reporter: that's the co- pilot there. passengers are commending him for staying calm and get more than 150 people on board safely to the ground in syracuse. a replacement crew came aboard and flew the plane onto logan. a history of heart troubles

boston-based draftkings and rival fan duel are defending insider information. the "new york times" reports a draftkings employee admitted to inadvertently releasing helped players. that same day, the employee won site. the companies have banned employees from playing at any other site. state lawmakers debating a new bill. we have a closer look at these good morning, nicole. >> good morning to you, chris. most would agree there are countless distractions that can take place while you are driving. of course lawmakers in massachusetts are trying to minimize those even more. they are taking a look at the idea of banning handheld cell phones while driving, of course text messaging behind the wheel was banned several years ago.

drivers 18 years old and younger are not allowed to use cell phones at all while driving. the conversation opens today that could ban it across the board. these are implemented already in 14 states including new york, connecticut, and vermont. several bills are on the table for discussion today. one would impose a $100 fine for first-time offenders, a $250 fine and a $500 fine for third-time offenders. of course, technology has bounds. of course, there are head lets and bluetooth devices. all of that will come in handy with regards to those who are implemented.

we've dipped into the upper 30s and norwood, wow, look at this. 32 degrees, norwood just dropped. wow, a chilly start in some of the suburbs this morning. mid-40s here from plymouth back up towards marshfield and 50s on the cape. the mild spots across the region this morning. we've had a kutch of fog locally dense by fog. the carolinas still dealing with showers today. joaquin continues to pull out to sea. today will be fantastic. temperatures rebound by about 30 or more degrees in some communities. coming into the mid to upper 60s, a few spots touch 70 today. tomorrow we come into the low 70s. cold front comes through and will bring in a reinforcing shot of colder air. a beautiful looking day thursday. we'll top out in the low 60s,

rides out there right now as the tuesday morning commute is under way. let's check to the north. 93 southbound has one bumper to bumper pocket with wilmington. also heavy is route 3 southbound hangs up between 495 and 129. to the south, east milton square to columbia road. route 3 northbound sluggish hang um to braintree. just hearing about the accident in we'ding southbound 93. the backup is already to north avenue. chris, kathryn? 6:17 right now. the mb ta is hoping the system wide schedules will cut down on delays and inconveniences for riders. there won't be a drastic change in departure times and more built into the ride to account for unexpected emergencies or weather conditions.

welcome back. it is 6:23 right now. anti-bullying laws appear to be working. according to a new study in the journal of american medicine, anti-bullying laws on the books are less likely to report acts of bullying and 20% less likely

to be victims of cyberbullies. south dakota had the highest rate of bullying while alabama had the lowest. there's a study for just about everything these days. oftentimes, the findings can contradict each other. >> this morning, jon keller takes a closer look at whether or not it can revile anything of substance. >> good morning. you've got to love scientific studies. ones that tell us petting a dog's fur can lower your blood pressure or tell you if certain foods are bad for you usually followed a few years later by the study showing they are good for you. with all due respect to the usually well-meaning researchers who put out the studies, over time, you get skeptical. for instance a new study out of australia claiming human happiness peaks before age 24 and after age 75, "couples reported the greatest sassis

faction with life -- satisfaction in life just before having their first child then a dip and then happiness increases later in life quoting again" when people start focusing on their free time." that last one does sound plausible, but overall, these findings really sell mu humanity short. you are telling me, people don't find happiness and satisfaction in raising children, especially very young kids. the implication of this study is that we're basically a bunch of narcissists, happiest when we have few responsibility to others and plenty of time to indulge ourselves. sorry that doesn't fit with my experience. i see pleasure from a challenge helping others. maybe they are fool meek or

it is 6:31 right now. crews have recovered one body in the search for 33 missing people on a cargo ship. >> we're learning more about some of the massachusetts matives on board that ship. susie steimle is live with more for us this morning. good morning, susie. >> reporter: good morning, chris. we learned the captain was trying to change course but was unable to because of mechanical failure that happened during the storm. friends and family members are holding on to hope that there are survivors still out there. two of them were members of the massachusetts maritime academy here in buzzards bay. their names are keith griffin and joe mathias. an active search is still ongoing. today we know that a body was discovered in the wreckage this weekend, but there is still a lifeboat unaccounted for.

testing the communications systems. it is the first time the lockdown system will be tested there. the drill starts at 10:00 this morning. new details about the possible moat in any event campus shooting in oregon. a law enforcement official says the 26-year-old dunman who ill -- gunman who killed nine people left a manifesto claim egg didn't have a girlfriend and that other people thought wees crazy. many went to counseling yesterday but classes are canceled all week long. 6:34 is the time. hillary clinton making an emotional appeal for tougher gun laws as she campaigned in new hampshire. the democratic presidential candidate held a town hall meeting in manchester yesterday vowing to expand background checks and tighten regulations on treatments to buy and sell guns.

as number in new hampshire. ayotte is sometimes mentioned as a potential candidate for vice president. falling rocks in vermont take out an amtrak train. at least seven people hurt as the cars came off the tracks. >> good morning, bree. >> the governor says there was no wrong dining as that this was a pure accident this. that will be up to the ntsb to make a final determination. remain closed. amtrak plans to bus passengers booked on the vermonter. it was headed to washington with 98 passengers and four crew members on board. near mont peel year where the wreck happened, it could have triggered a rook slide. >> it felt a bump.

around lunchtime yesterday. he got away on a bike with about $200. the same man may be connected to a robbie later in the day. a -- robbery later in the day. a man matching the description day. putting down the phones behind the wheel. lawmakers are expected to take driving ban. good morning, nicole. >> good morning to you, kathryn. we've seen similar laws in other new england states like new york, new hampshire, vermont, and connecticut. now massachusetts lawmakers are considering the same thing, ban the handheld cell phones while you are driving. texting and driving was banned several years ago. of course drivers are not allowed to use cell phones at all while driving when they are 18 or younger.

a new study shows how much time we spend with the doctor and how much we spend waiting for the physician. the study estimates the typical outpatient medical visit takes up to 121 minutes of the patients tier time. once you get there you are in the waiting room for an average of 61 minutes. then the actual amount of time you spend seeing the doctors getting examined face-to-face only 20 minutes. all of this waiting costs consumers money of course. researchers found that americans spent $1.1 billion obtaining outpatient care. that adds up to $52 billion. the study's author says the wait times can go down as physicians conduct exams over the phone or even via computers. let's check out the reaction right now. march wrote "we live in an area where there is some of the best

a very delicate rescue mission in manchester. take a look at this all to save a 9-year-old boy stuck in a tree. >> he got his leg caught between the branches yesterday, and after using a saw that didn't work, fire crews used the jaws of life to treat him from the tree. he was treated for minor injuries. >> i can't imagine as a parent those moments. >> yikes. >> and that's heavy machinery we're talking about. glad he's okay.
