has to use her breast pump in an airport restroom for pets. the houston astros blast off to start major league baseball's postseason, beating the new york yankees in the american league wildcard game. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. well, it is expected to be warm and sunny today in south carolina. the second dry day in a row, following days of flood producing rains that have killed at least 17 people in the carolinas, but the trouble remains. dams are on the verge of collapse. the capitol's water supply is threatened and more evacuations may be ordered. weijia jiang reports from columbia, where a midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew remains in effect. >> reporter: families are just starting the process of cleaning up. you can see behind me piles of personal belongings now going

and they tell me what makes it sting even more is that they are bracing for the possibility of even more floodwaters. residents are bringing damaged belongings to the curb after record flooding in columbia, south carolina. >> what we will have to do is gut the whole entire house, dry it out, and start from scratch. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: angela cole's house is ruined. she and her family were squid from their attic after posting an s.o.s. on facebook. >> we are here and we are alive and that is all that matters. my kids are safe. >> reporter: water has started receding in some of the hardest-hit areas revealing stechs damage and debris but some people still can't get more and more flooding is expected. crews worked to form a make-shift dam on the conagree river and will drop sandbags to close a breach in the canal but the big concern is the low country where several rivers, like this one, makes their way so the sea.

careful. minute-by-minute. >> reporter: tens of thousands water. donations are pouring in and four distribution sites have been set up in columbia and 800 people staying in shelters and additional evacuations could be ordered if the water starts to rise again. the main concern is the huge massive water that is weaving its way through rivers and creeks and could cause more dams to breach. sometime this morning, national guard troops are expected to drop those massive sandbags in vulnerable areas in case that happens. in columbia, south carolina, weijia jiang, cbs news. the national transportation safety board began its investigation into the sinking of the cargo ship "el faro" during hurricane joaquin. the search for 30 missing crewmembers continue. the ship disappearedhursday near the bahamas. investigators hope to find the

in recent weeks. democrats still have a soft spot for her husband and why he is taking a role in the campaign and started last night here. >> ladies and gentlemen, president bill clinton. >> reporter: in need of a boost, hillary clinton's campaign is rolling out the man once described as the great explainer. bill clinton joins stephen colbert on "the late show." the former president explained the appeal of his wife's chief rival for the democratic nomination. >> why do you think bernie sanders is doing so well? >> because there are a lot of people all over the world that are really hacked off that they think the system is rigged against them and the rich get all of the gains, and in america, a lot of them believe the republicans have been -- they award the people who go the furtherest to the right so the democrats would be more effective if they moved further to the left. >> reporter: hillary clinton is fighting to explain to voters who she is and convince them she

can be trusted. the e-mail controversy has bogged down her campaign and eroded support. clinton since tuesday's debate hanging on to a diminishing lead over bernie sanders in iowa and trailing in new hampshire. campaigning tuesday in iowa, she joked about the role her husband will play in her campaign. >> what are you going to do with bill for four years? >> put him to work! ha, ha! >> reporter: and put him to work, she did. the former president also had a take on donald trump's popularity. he says trump is a master brander and the most interesting candidate running. >> he says something that overrides the differences. in the first debate they were competing who is the most politically correct in the answers.

on "cbs this morning." the american commander in afghanistan told congress it was afghan troops that called in a u.s. air strike that misand it tanly hit a hospital. a charity says both the u.s. and the afghan lison harmelin fghan government knew where the hospital was. they say u.s. forces were nearby when the afghan forces requested the air support. >> we had a special operations unit that was in close vicinity that was talking to the aircraft to deliver those fires. >> campbell also told lawmakers the u.s. needs to keep more than 1,000 troops in afghanistan beyond 2016. the obama administration plans to cut the current u.s. force of about 10,000. the general says conditions on the ground have changed. a human rights monitoring group says russia launched another wave of air strikes

emotional when he sees sunshine. tuesday morning, the state, of course, has been inundated with historic rains for more than a week. well, an alarming report on nuclear security plus a new twist in a decade's old murder case and some of the headlines on the morning's newsstands. the associated press reports on stepped up attempts by smugglers to sell radioactive material to terror groups like isis. earlier this mere in maldough va, authorities working with the phish stopped an attempt to sell material for a dirty bomb. the fourth attempt to sell atomic material on the black market the last five years. but the a.p. found many of those arrested escaped harsh penalties. the sydney morning herald reports on new terror raids in australia. police arrested five people in sydney today in connection with the shooting death of a employee last week.
