good wednesday morning to you. i'm chris mckinnon. >> i'm kathryn hauser. thanks for joining us on this wednesday, october 7th. moving right along here. we're going to have great weather again today, danielle. >> it's like classic fall weather. chilly starts in the morning but we rebound nicely during this afternoon. temperatures are similar to where we were yesterday. not as cold in some spots. notice norwood is sitting at 40 degrees. a lot of spots are running in the 40s. 50s out over the outer cape and islands. we have clouds overhead. most of them high, thin clouds. we'll get filtered sunshine through this morning. so 48 degrees on average. cool start, sunrise coming up at 6:48. lunchtime looks awesome. 66 degrees with a blend of sun and clouds. the wind won't be a concern today, and we'll top out around 70. 67 for the ride home. quite pleasant with the sunset at 6:16. another nice day today just

let's get you on the roads. hi, robi. >> hi, danielle. only seeing one trouble spot because of a late clearing work crew. there's ramp closures overnight that are supposed to clear by 5:00. we're seeing a bumper to bumper backup from columbia road back to south bay mall. total traffic network just told me they don't expect this residual backup to last long. 5:02 right now. the jury selection begins in the trial of the teen accused of raping and killing his math teacher. >> the defense is expected to argue insanity. nicole jacobs is live with more on this case in salem. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn. two years ago, colleen ritzer's body was found behind danvers high school, and almost immediately, they were searching for a ninth grade

student who was also reported missing but seen on surveillance video following ritzer inside of a bathroom. police say that is where he murdered his teacher, chism murdered ritzer, his math teacher, raped her and slit her throat. it would be the next day, investigators would find ritzer dead and chism walking along the side of the road. it was widely reported that ritzer asked chism to stay after school because he seemed distracted earlier in the day in class. a videotaped interview with chism, authorities say he said ritzer provoked the attack by insulting him. chism's defense attorney saying investigators coerced him into making that confession. ultimately, the judge decided not to allow that video as part of evidence during this trial. chism is now 16 years old. again, he was 14 years old at the time of the crime.

he is being tried as an adult. his defense attorneys, as you mentioned, are expected to use an insanity defense, but today begins that initial process of determining those who will determine chism's fate. we're live in salem, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. two fantasy sports sites are under investigation. the new scrutiny comes amid concerns of possible insider information at boston-based draftkings and new york-based fan duel. investigation. >> i have won over $29,000 on fan dual. >> reporter: winning big money from watching just one week of football. the latest fantasy football sites promise to make that a reality. our employees at boston-based draftkings and fan duel using advantage. >> sort of like the casino manager all of a sudden hitting a big score at the poker table just kind of makes you wonder. >> reporter: the new york

inquiry after a draftkings employee won $350,000 on rival site fan duel. draftkings responded with this statement "there is no evidence that any information was used to create an unfair advantage and any insinuations to the contrary are factually incorrect. >> if i had to bet there's going to be some kind of regulation. >> reporter: right now, the sites have managed to avoid the same regulations enforced on sports betting. >> nobody will want to play if they think the sites are rigged. >> according to "the boston herald," the treasury is tossing around the idea of using the concept to make money for the lottery here in massachusetts. she says the state should start its own fantasy sports site and guarantees the problems wouldn't arise as lottery employees aren't allowed to play. the ntsb is on the scene of

where the el faro sank. bree is here following the latest developments. good morning, bree. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn. the 41-year-old ship was due to retire from caribbean duty soon. the five polish workers on board were there to repair the engine room for a retrofitting. that engine lost power as it neared hurricane joaquin and least 33 crew members stranded at the worst possible time. the el faro's owners do not believe the work in the engine room caused the problems that led to the sinking. the ntsb will take over the investigation, searching for the all important data recorder. meanwhile, one body was located in a survival suit. they are still looking for the rest of the crew. maritime engineers mathias and griffth are still missing. in winthrop, childhood friends gathered to pray for a friend.

his father says the boy had severe diarrhea after visiting a petting zoo at the fair. another child got sick but they petting zoo yet. several fairs across the country so we looked into this. the topsfield fair says it takes precautions to keep people safe putting in more sanitizing stations. keene, new hampshire facing charges for kicking and killing a 17-year-old dog. officials say toby was working on his project when the dog walked into the yard and relieved himself. a united airlines co-pilot passed out in the cockpit one day off another pilot died mid- flight.

houston to san francisco when the co-pilot passed out. he did regain consciousness by the time the plane landed. however, monday, michael johnston, the pilot died on a flight. united airlines is apologizing to taye newton mom -- to a newton mom and promising to install a private room for new mothers. she took to twitter when she was asked to go to a room to pump that is set up for dogs to relieve themselves. she was told to go to the relief center. she ended up having to pump in the terminal. >> there was a red fire hydrant for dogs to relieve themselves. that's obviously not where i'm going to pump my breast milk for my baby. >> no word on when the nursing room will be set up at dulles.

a fitchburg man saved by a shark attack. >> a shark smashed into him leaving him with deep cuts and bruises. after returning home, he started having chest and back pain. so he went to queen elizabeth's in brighton to get checked out. doctors found internal bruising from the shark attack but also found something else. >> if this hadn't happened with the shark causing me to go in with this chest pain, i would have never known about this cancer? >> they found a cancerous tumor on his kidney. >> doctors with are able to remove that tumor and by catching the cancer early it

new this morning, a crash involving a state police cruiser overnight. the trooper was transporting a prisoner who had been arrested for oui when the cruiser was struck by a car. the trooper and the other driver were not hurt. the prison was taken to the hospital. the other driver will be cited for driving about a suspended license. and a controversial gas pipeline. police took the trio into construction saying they were blocking construction equipment. protesters questioned the project safety. spectra says it's safe. a social studies teacher's job is on the line because

is a little welcome message here. >> screening for mental health shows us a kiosk that they plan to unveil at the statehouse tomorrow where folks can self- test for depression. they walked me through the screening tool that can be deployed at college campuses, you name it. they envision this kiosk to send the message that mental health is no different than physical health. >> anywhere from 7 million to 8 million people suffer from depression. some of it is they don't recognize some of the doddy symptoms could be symptomatic of depression. >> reporter: the kiosk can confidentially screen for more than a half dozen different disorders. it's not a substitute for a diagnosis, but you can print its findings and take them to your own doctor or if you need help finding a professional,

surveillance video showed him following her. her body was found and he was found with some of her belongings. we have key evidence that the judge has already thrown out, not allowing it in the trial at all. a lowell man will spend the next five to six years behind bars for dousing a convenience store clerk with gasoline and threatening to set him on fire. he pled guilty to armed robbery and assault charges for the january robbery of the store. police got tips from the public and arrested him. good morning, i'm susie steimle live in front of the draftkings headquarters in boston. this site and rival site fan duel are under scrutiny this morning for possible insider trading after a draftkings employee won $350,000 on rival

if you haven't heard about either of she's sites, they are fantasy sports betting sites that allow you to make money weekly rather than waiting for the entire season. because of the issue, both sites are not allowing employees to place bets on either site at this point in time. we'll tell you how it affects people aplaying coming up 6:00. susie steimle, wbz news this morning. the el faro cargo ship was due for an engine retrofit. they planned to retire it from caribbean service but say the work being done by five polish crew members should not have led to the loss of power. the ship was disabled. they are investigating the sinking of the el faro while the crew continues the search. what else is the crew looking for that may shed light on the ship's fate? the federal prison system says 6,000 federal inmates will

october 30 and november 2. the reason? all of the affected inmates are drug offenders and eligible for release. the inmates went through an appeals process to win their release. it's the largest one-time release of federal prisoners in history. if you want to go out of town for the holidays, this is the week to book your trip. ororbitz says prices rise once me hit mid-october. fall is here. that means pumpkins are everywhere. while there are meanty right now, that may not be the case around thanksgiving. the pumpkin crop in illinois, the top-producing state in the country is lower than expected and that could lead to a shortage. the area got too much rain to have a successful harvest. experts say you may want to grab canned pumpkin now and

halloween is just around the corner. there are some things to remember to make sure everyone in your family stays safe. when picking out a costume, make sure kids can see clearly through it. when you can, choose face paint over a mask. make sure the outfit isn't too big so little ones don't trip while they are walking. bring flashlights along with a trick or treat bag. when it comes to carving pumpkins, use carving tools instead of knives. they are less dangerous. time for the "daily talker." there's a new way to clean your teeth and enhance those pearly whites. >> it's turning a lot of heads, though. >> reporter: halloween is coming up so you won't be surprised if you see people with black teeth. here we're talking black stuff you put on your choppers to make them look better. check this out.

that's a houston television reporter trying out charcoal powder. a woman she interviewed read about it on pinterest and bought a jar of it for 12 bucks. the charcoal was gritty but cinnamon flavored. it's marketed as a teeth cleaner not a whitener. it does not carry the seal of approval from the american dental association but the makers of the product include paperwork that they say proves it's safe. for the record, the women didn't notice the difference in in the whiteness but said their moellers and bicuspids are super duper clean. you can hear the kid's screaming in the background teeth. there. >> we asked would you do this? a viewer row "no because activated charcoal will stain
