our top story at 5:30, the coast guard calling off the ship that disappeared during hurricane joaquin judgement and tonight winthrop police investigating after video surfaces of a high school football player dressing in a locker room. one player has been suspended for taking the video. the school, by the way, also forefitting a game that was scheduled for this friday night. and jury selection underway in the trial of a danvers' teenager charged with killing his math teacher. nearly half of the potential jurors have already been dismissed. chisholm was 14 when he killed colleen riser at the high school. a 20-month-old new england boy dies from e. coli that he may have contracted at a county fair and tonight we know another child is in the hospital.

maine health investigators just took new sample as the fairgrounds, but getting the results could take days. tonight jim armstrong takes a closer look. >> yeah, he really likes the animals. >> reporter: all kids do. that is the attraction at an event like this one. the fair in maine. but the petting zoo at last month's oxford fair also in maine may be linked to one boy's sickness and another boy's death. >> you wouldn't think you're going to catch a disease and you could lose your child coming to the fair. >> reporter: the parents of the 20-month-old colton say their little boy was exposed to the e.coli virus when they visited september. within a week, they say, their normally healthy son was never recovered. colton's dad took to facebook good-bye. we were with him almost every moment in the hospital and are happy we got to hold and rock him to sleep. i have learned there is no pain your child.

little boy from that same fair e.coli symptoms. >> what happened to these two is so rare. obviously if this was an every day occurrence or anything petting zoos. >> in a petting zoo, you can imagine that a child might touch a contaminated animal and put their hands to their mouth. >> reporter: and vigilance can help. >> the best way to protect yourself, especially if you're at petting zoo, is to mike sure you and your children wash your hands or use hand sanitizers after you have been touching animals. >> reporter: earlier today we checked in with officials over at the topsfield fair which is going on now and they say they have hundreds of hand washing stations and anti-bacterial disspencers at the ready all in an attempt to make sure kids and adults keep clean after touching animals there.

>> a heartbreaking story. thank you. a developing story, the regime is stronger. and back hoar at overwhelm man accused of making bomb threats and the school is now facing federal charges. the investigators say last year the 24-year-old anthony ray sent e-mail threats to several schools in norwood, to an elementary school in chicago and a rhode island college. the norwood police arrested him in june. they say while he was free on bond, ray made another threat to n.c. state. he could face 10 years in prison. tomorrow volkswagen's top u.s. executive will be on capitol hill to testify about a major cheating scandal there. the company's new ceo saying that we can expect to see recalls to start in january. volkswagen installed software in as many as 11 million squeeze l -- diesel vehicles designed to trick u.s. emissions tests. tonight fan duel is now

banning all employees from playing any daily fantasy sports games for money. there are reports someone who ws at the rival site draft kings may have had access to inside information before winning $350,000 in a fan dual contest. fan duel says there is no evidence that the contest was compromised but he has hired an investigator to look into the case. today boston mayor marty walsh and the police commissioner are in washington, d.c. they're at the summit on violent crime talking about what they have built in community relations in boston against violence. the two have often appeared together after violent crimes and boston's homicide rate, we should point out, hasn't been this low in 15 years. well, tonight an eye team investigation, it has been months since the snow finally stopped falling, but as we approach another winter, some m. m. homeowners, believe it or not rstill fighting to get their homes fixed. we have a closer look. lauren? >> reporter: we found people who are out there still not

breaking news. sky eye over a bad accident on the pike that is causing major problems. the this is all happening on the eastbound ramp to the alston-brighton tolls. in fact, it is closed right now. it is quite a back-up there. apparently there is a truck that collided with a car. the car is under the truck, but what we can also tell you is there are no injuries reported, but, again, major, major back- ups. this will cause problemmed headed eastbound on the mass pike. if you look out in the distance, it looks like that is also causing problems for people who are heading home westbound. it is a story we will update you as soon as we get more information. local doctors are using a relatively new technique to try to protect newborns. >> as part of the innovation fair here in the city, a panel on advances in newborn health at brigham and there is a fascinating story about a

and it is a wbz exclusive. >> the day you're born might be the riskiest day of your life. >> reporter: quite a reality check at brisham and women's hospital. >> for most babies, thankfully, this is a wonderful and healthy event, but for some babies, this is complicated by a period of reduced blood supply to the brain. >> reporter: like baby joshua, born just 24 hours ago. in an attempt to protect babies like joshua from brain injury, the doctors are doing something that might sound strange. within hours of birth, the babies are wrapped in cooling blankets to lower their body temperature to about four degrees below normal. it is cooling therapy. >> this therapy can reduce the risk of major injuries that could otherwise lead to death or significant disability in the form of crier brail palsy by 35%. >> and when she was born, she wasn't breathing. rough. >> reporter: and the scary moments around the birth of her daughter annie. >> because i had had a normal pregnancy, we never prepared

that are going to go wrong. >> reporter: but things did go wrong and there were concerns that annie was having seizures. doctors told the couple that cooling therapy might help. >> we were just really scared, but we knew that the medical experts were recommending all of this. we may as well go with their advice, and i am so glad we did. >> reporter: because 16 moss later, annie is hitting all of her developmental milestones. >> and on the early end she walked before her first birthday. >> reporter: welcome news for the doctor whose cooled her down in those first few days of life. >> this therapy is a therapy that last as lifetime. >> the cooling therapy is for babies born at term and brigham has treated 75 so far from around the state and some brought in from outside hops. the treatment is generally safe and the babies are sedated to keep them very comfortable. >> what a great story. thank you so much. >> and a beautiful little girl, too. nice to see her so healthy! and let's talk to eric now.

he is out at wilson farms in lexington. i got my pumpkins already carved. i haven't picked my apples. >> there is still time, right, eric? >> reporter: absolutely still some time! finally some cold nights. the colder nights we have had recently, they add color to the apples, nor flavor. the drought actually intensifies some of that flavor in the apples. a quintessential fall scene here. you to love this place! you have your gourdes and off to the side, because i have been here on a weekend, kreider doughnuts rolling hot off the presses. the smell is ridiculous. and, of course, you decorate the house. there are some pumpkins that really only a gourde could love, so the message is give every mum kin a home, and gourdes this autumn season! let's take a look at what you can find here at wilson farms, and the more interesting pumpkins and also all of the produce. everything has been great this season. we didn't have so much rain where we ended up dealing with a lot of blight or other issues that come along with a wet season. when it is drier out, at least a lot of the farms, there are

so many great local farms in new england, they can irrigate and kind of mitigate the drought a little bit. good news. all around here it looks like autumn. the only thing you can complain about is the decreasing daylight. let's take a look at the weather here as we head through the next few days. it looks like the great autumn conditions are going to continue. we have more sunshine to go for tomorrow a few showers on friday. it doesn't look like a soaking rain event by any means and columbus day weekend, a little bit of -- something for everybody. it starts off chilly, moderates on sunday. get gets warmer for monday, but but all of those days are looking quiet in the weather department. the warmest day of the month so far. 71 in fitchburg, manchester at 70 degrees. excellent fall conditions out there on the football field. so if you're just coming in for a little high school, middle school action, practice this week. the high pressure building in behind a weak cold front tonight. all that is going to do for us is bring in a little more crisp air. the temperatures are going to be almost 10 degrees cooler

tonight, another one of the chilly fall evenings. mainly clear skies. 42 to 46 for the suburbs around 50 and downtown boston and north-northwesterly breeze at two to 10. tomorrow on the chilly start, we'll stay ton cooler side. still plenty of sunshine tomorrow. we're looking at highs that will make the upper 50s to low 60s instead of the low 70s that we saw this afternoon. convenient still you have noticed in early october that sun as long as you see plenty of it feels nice and warm, and a chilly evening on tap tomorrow night. once that sun dips below the horizon, the temperature will fall off. we have the high pressure building into tomorrow. the next cold front is right behind it that one has more moisture to work with. so scattered showers are expected on friday. more cloud cover as well a little more moisture in the air, of course. but that front does depart by saturday morning. i know a lot of folks are running the hartford marathon. it looks perfect for running. cool, dry, lots of sunshine and temperatures get a bit warmer.

it was still a hurricane this morning. finally weakening and now a tropical storm and its trek takes it toward portugal. it won't be tropical anymore, but it will bring rain and gusty winds to portugal and spain over this weekend. here is your full accuweather seven-day, heading toward next week and columbus dayment we're back into the 70s. next week looks mild until the end and then we might get a pretty good shot of cold air by next weekend, something we're watching. in terms of active rainstorms, we have none of that. if you're heading out, whether you want to cruise around town in the mobile weather lab or just take a nice fall drive tweather is looking great for all of those things. over to you. >> they will be handing the keys out at some point. >> thank you, eric. it was laminated castaway destined to be boss some buddies with pigeons and lidar but tom hanks came up big when he found a college kid's i.d. the fordham student dropped the i.d. while running through central park and tom hanks picked it up.

to be here. >> i'm dieing to taste it. >> reporter: and heady topper. >> beer is happening. >> reporter: is the dream creation of the brewer. he and his wife distribute just 2,000 case as week, only to nearby bars and stores. >> i get to make beer the way i'd -- i like to drink my beer and thankfully a lot of people agree that that is a good way. >> reporter: the craft beer movement has swept the nation, and now there's a craze within beers. in california fans wrapped around two blocks to get the popular the younger, and the mayor ana trench beer is gone in hours when it is released in florida and the glass jug in north carolina did record business when they sold a series of rare soul ales. >> it is an event. it is not just tabata beer, it is about the other people that share this love and being able to experience it together, talk about it, brag about it even. >> reporter: and in vermont, the lines for heady aren't getting any shorter.

has been forefitted and all other football activities are on hold. >> beyond that, police are now involved as well. let's get right to jim smith. she live with us together. jim? >> reporter: david, i'm afraid the police are involved. up to 10 students are under investigation, but they haven't decided yet if charges will be filed. but action has been taken here at winthrop high school. at least one player has been suspended, and a game forefitted. >> you have to keep an eye on your kids and what they're dog on their phone. >> reporter: football shock in winthrop. a high school player in big trouble after allegedly recording video of a teammate changing in the boys' locker room. there is word he has been suspended and now the team's game against gloucester on friday. >> today with the media, they just don't understand. and now i think the lesson learned to understand that when you send something out, you're responsible for the actions. >> reporter: that video may have been distributed to others, parents and students quick to react.
