they are still looking for the exact cause. >> a woman was running up the dock saying the boats were on fire. >> reporter: ryep heyward grabbed -- ryan heyward grabbed a hose. >> we wanted to make sure it didn't spread to the next line of docks. the wind was blowing in that direction and we wanted to make sure everything stayed as wet as they could. >> reporter: firefighters worked frantically, but five four sunk. >> the fire was able to travel fairly quickly through the moored vessels or through the docked vessels. >> reporter: tamara and justin didn't just lose their boat. they lost their home. they lived on it. >> we just sold everything to move on it and live on it. so we have nothing left now.

now we've got to figure out our next move. >> reporter: people in this marina are like a big family. dana pringle didn't hesitate to offer the couple his boat to live on. >> well, you have to have a place to live. you don't have a boat. just take my boat. that's all. just live on it. >> reporter: at the might of the fire, a drone from a brewster ambulance crew showed the extent of it. 11 boats damaged, but no lives lost. >> everybody's okay. nobody got hurt so far. >> reporter: that obviously is what matters. they will focus on the engine compartment of the 35 foot boat. they can't figure out why that boat is on the bottom of the cove here. reporting live from quincy, i'm bill shields, wbz news. lisa? a developing story tonight. the u.s. airman who helped stop a gunman on a french train is recovering from stab wounds.

liam martin is here with another look. >> reporter: this started as a verbal altercation outside of a bar in sacramento that quickly turned violent. this shows a large group of men fighting in the early morning hours today. spencer stone is the larger man in the white shirt surrounded by several men there. you see him in a fist fight with at least two of them who then began to stab him. toward the end of the video, you will see a large spot of blood on stone's shirt as he is the suspects, two asian men then flee as police arrive. they have not yet been caught. this comes just two months after stone was wounded stopping a terrorist attack. two american friends and two others rushed a morrocan man who was trying to open fire on officers. stone is being treated at the uc davis medical center in sacramento. authorities say the altercation had nothing to do with terrorism and nothing to do

they called it simply a nightlife-related dispute. david? >> liam, thank you. breaking news tonight, it is one messy house. republicans now desperately looking for a new speaker after the leading candidate says, i don't want it. political analyst jon keller is here now. it seems like the house republicans are now all saying "not it." >> reporter: it does seem like chaos on the playground. keep in mind, there is a serious trend at play here. john boehner is leaving as speaker in large part because he got tired of fighting off a small but adamant faction of the party that wants to base votes on the hard right fiscal and social agenda, things like government shutdowns and planned parenthood. the so-called freedom cuss cuss many with tea party roots who were sent to d.c. to push the issues. they won't take know for an answer and apparently have enough votes to veto a new speaker who won't play ball. keep in mind, too, the house

in line to hold isn't as powerful a job as it once was, lacking the power that comes with spending earmarks, for instance. keep in mind, there is a comparable phenomena happening in democratic politics that forced hillary clinton to abandon her long standing support of the pacific trade deal. you've been hearing about the anti-establishment mood in both parties. we just saw it in action today in the house, and we've seen it in the rise in the likes of sanders. so when there's that kind of explosive situation out there, no institution is immune, certainly not the house. >> reporter: i did read this afternoon that there is at least the possibility that boehner may stick around a little longer, he may have to. is this a possibility? >> reporter: he may stay through the balance of the congressional session now to calm this down. no clear alternative has emerged. get this. there's even talk of bringing in mitt romney to be speaker. the speaker doesn't even have

i don't think that'll happen, though. >> we shall see. lisa, to you. finding the sunken cargo ship's black box should help investigators figure out why it went down. first they have to find it. the el faro sank last week during hurricane joaquin. there were 33 people on board. three were from new england. the data recorder holds key information about the speed and also holds all of the communication between the ship down. more evacuations are under way in south carolina. the governor put out the order for some people living on the coast to leave. the floodwater is now moving east downstream that could cause record flooding in the next 72 hours. the situation could be dire there for another two weeks. back here at home, if you were hoping to have the same not gonna happen. cooler tonight and a little rain coming. >> a lot cooler. the coldest air of the season

>> as we get around the holiday weekend, we'll be covering up the mums. another cool night expected around here. 56 already in boston. down to 55 in provincetown. feels good when the sun's up and now starting to get toward the horizon. our coldest temperatures will be right around midnight tonight. we're watching clouds moving in from the west. they'll halt that drop in temperature and rise by tomorrow morning. then that rain that's moving through parts of the great lakes will be pushing in tomorrow afternoon. so tonight, we'll fall back into the 40s then stop there. about 51 in downtown boston for a low. we'll look at those clouds increase tomorrow morning. towards southeastern massachusetts, cape, island, south shore, you'll probably get a good amount of sunshine tomorrow. the clouds will be more dense inland. we'll look at the clouds and showers inland. maybe even a clap of thunder or lightning that will be mixed in here with the downpours and the other story as they sweep offshore tomorrow night, a lot of wind in the forecast. we'll talk about that and look

a man charged from his hospital bed in a botched armed robbery in west roxbury. police say chriser with soderbergh may have been upset at the owner of the store because he wouldn't let him bring his dog in. he is accused of coming back to the store with a knife but the store owner fought him off. both were injured and expected to be okay. dedham police are looking for help finding the persons who spray painted swastikas around town. one was near the end did i cot commuter rail -- endicott commuter rail station. a year after the long island bridge closed, many homeless residents who used to live on that island are still struggling to find new housing. the city closed the bridge because of the safety concerns. crews late are demolished it. the city has yet to replace many of the recovery and detox beds on that island.

and a school bus out of control in worcester. the driver leaves sullivan middle school after dropping off students, makes a left turn but completely loses control here and slides right out of his seat. the video doesn't show the impact of the bus hitting parked cars nearly pushing one of them right into a house. police say the driver has been cited for not buckling her seat belt. the bruins tonight are back on the ice. >> it is opening night of the new season. of course the bs hoping to put last season in the rear view mirror and get back into the playoffs. steve burton live at the garden tonight. steve? >> reporter: plenty of excitement tonight at the garden. the question is, how good is this hockey team? we certainly don't know a lot about the bruins. there's a lot of new blood, but they will be tested tonight when the jets come in to town and the bs are fired up for opening night. the captain, zdeno chara will not be in the lineup. he took part in the morning

helping the 33-year-old who was trying to lose weight but say he broke the rules. >> reporter: 33-year-old steven says his eating addiction landed him here, the trunk of his father's suv. he had no place to go. >> it's an addiction, and i realize that. it's a disease. >> reporter: for the past 80 days, steven was getting the help he needed at a rhode island hospital where he lost 20 pounds. after he violated the care plan by ordering pizza, the hospital tomorrow him he couldn't stay any longer. >> i was supposed to get down to 550 to get the gas strike by pass. -- gastric by pass. >> if i get him up the stairs somehow some way, he will go right back to his eating habits. >> reporter: steven's father says taking his son home will be a death sentence so they will continue to drive until they can find a place that will help. >> i don't know where to turn to. i called everybody you can think of in the state of rhode island, and nobody seems to help me. >> reporter: social workers are

the ski area not quite pumping out the snow yet. this picture is coming in from the mount washington valley. dan hogue taking that shot up a faint aurora visible last night with the clear skies. today, another beauty. clear skies, cooler temperatures. we look off toward the west. a little push of milder air across the ohio valley and reaching up into the great lakes ahead of our next cold front, which is going to boost our temperatures into tomorrow. so a lot of up and down in the temperature department over the next several days. in terms of rainfall, tracking showers moving into the great lakes. a more potent front arrives later on tonight. we have clear skies in the first half which would allow the temperatures to fall. chilly once again and we'll cap after midnight and the clouds thicken up as we head toward tomorrow morning. so it is a mainly dry morning and i do think it will be sun in southeastern parts of the state for the first half of the day.

as we head toward lunchtime, a couple of scattered showers. most of them will be during the afternoon and evening. a couple of these can bring a quick downpour. even a little bit of lightning and thunder. we'll get really gusty winds. wind is the one thing everyone will notice the most as we head through our friday. they'll be wrapping up by 10:00 and 11:00 in the evening. the good news is the front is offshore by saturday morning. rain totals won't be exactly this. this is a computer model that tells the story. a much lower chance of showers, lower rain totals toward the cape, the islands, the south coast. the best chance of decent rainfall from the boston area and north and west. producing maybe a half inch to northwest of that. the wind side of things is already breezy to the south in the morning. the wind starts to creep up as the day goes on. it's downright gusty and some gusts are as high as 20 to 45 miles per hour tomorrow. make sure once the goshage pickup comes through, bring them in or they will be gone if you don't.

as we kick off columbus day weekend, which all told looks great, a really chilly start. sunday a mix of sun and clouds. one other story for the weekend, high pressure overhead on saturday night. it's going to bring in colder air and we might get our first widespread trough and 20s across northern new england. if you are taking a trip up toward the white mountains, highs will be near 50 on saturday and back into the 20s on saturday night. it is the biggest fall weekend for outdoor festivals. tomorrow is the one day we're watching and maybe a shower or two on tuesday. david and lisa, we're back into one of those patterns where rain is hard to come by. >> eric, thank you so much. in tonight's eye on education, massachusetts could see more charter schools. paula ebben is here tonight with a closer look. paula? >> reporter: right now, state

law caps the number of charter schools at 120. governor charlie baker wants to today he introduced legislation that could allow the state to add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year. charter schools are public schools that are publicly funded but privately operated. right now, there are 08 in massachusetts. the system is giving more wait to high need and low-income students as well as learning english and learning disabilities. >> well we have 37,000 families. >> we simply want a shot at a great education for our kids

build a great future. >> right now, the 37,000 students were placed on the waiting list. they were hoping to get in a charter school. more to come. lisa? >> thank you. for the first time, m.i.t. is offering course credit for free classes online. students can take a semester of online courses in a graduate management program and earn what's called a micromasters degree. if you do well during that online semester, you can aplay to finish the one-year program on campus. m.i.t. is saying there will be a fee to earn that degree. it's going to cost you more to binge watch your favorite netflix shows. >> plus, treating pre-eclampsia without delivering the baby. local doctors helping mothers with high-risk complications. >> coming up new at 6:00, it was constantly by their side at home and at school. so a principal and student challenged each other to ditch their cell phones. >> when i handed it over, my

i mean, look at that highway. >> it looks like a parking lot. >> how is that possible? if you are in lane 10 and you need to get to lane 2, how do you do that? >> i don't think you do. until now, doctors had no choice but to deliver babies of women with pre-eclampsia. local doctors are using a new method to get those babies closer to term. >> so far, she's been a good girl. >> reporter: a good girl indeed but megan hasn't met her little girl yet. there was one complication that worried her. pre-eclampsia that cha cause major problems with the mom. >> i didn't want to make a decision with you are deciding something that has to happen for mom but is not necessarily the best thing for baby. >> reporter: 200,000 women in the u.s. suffer from pre- eclampsia every year. the only treatment is to

deliver the baby which isn't such a big deal if the pregnancy is to term. what if mom's only six or seven months along? >> the morbidity that go as long and the real chance of the baby dying from being early. >> reporter: to change that, doctors at mass general are changing one similar to dieing asis where it's run through a machine that's eliminated with that associated to pre- eclampsia and returns the blood back to the mom. >> the device lowers the levels, reduces blood pressure, lowers protein in the urine. and we were able to prolong pregnancy. >> reporter: for at least a couple of weeks, which is a long time in fetal development. >> it could make a real difference in the lives of a lot of families and newborns. >> reporter: while megan is probably out of the woods, she is excited for other moms who could benefit. >> reporter: doing something that doesn't harm the mom and potentially lengthens the pregnancy.

that's going to be a huge relief for mom. >> reporter: so far, the therapy has been tested on 11 people in europe. they demonstrated that it can, in fact, prolong pregnancy. if that's the case, researchers will apply for fda approval. they are cautiously optimistic, but if this could work, i mean, 10% of women worldwide suffer from pre-eclampsia. >> truly it can be a game changer. you are talking about a mother and baby's life that could be in danger. that relatively simple therapy could keep you both healthy and safe. duking it out over dumplings. still to come, a chef says her former co-worker stole her secret family recipe and ripped off her menu. >> plus, an i-team investigation months after the snow stopped falling. why are so many massachusetts residents still fighting their insurance company? >> and hitting the gym. what the passenger did after
