good sunday morning everybody. this is a live look at franklin park where the would say on the association half marathon starts in about an hour thanks for being with us, i'm kerry connolly. runners are in for some great conditions for this race. it really is a perfect day for running >> perfect. cool temperatures this morning, not too bad. if you're a spectator, you'll

want an extra layer because temperatures are running in the 30s and 40s. boston here, we're holding with 49 degrees, some 40s, a couple of 50s there on the cape and islands. really a big variation in temperatures because we had some clear skies overnight. for the half marathon today, 8:00 a.m. the start time, 52-degrees and a southwest breeze at 10 to 15 miles per hour. no rain on the way throughout the entire day. 4:00 p.m., temperatures reach their peak in the mid and upper 60s and then we cool off into the 50s for coming up in just a bit, i'll have more details on when we'll see some 70s. your columbus day forecast not far away as well >> pamela, thank you so much as we mentioned, the baa

under way in about an hour. the race is a qualifier for the boston marathon. even if that's not your nicole is there live reporter: we're near the zoo and this is where thousands of runners are lacing up and trek. i do want to bring in someone very important to the baa and that is jack swimming. of course, an runners. >> we have 8500 local runners but also 70 countries represented coming out just to run system. a day weekend in boston. reporter: a lot of elite runners and some big names. >> exactly. we are excited because we have the 2015 boston marathon champion here.

it's always special when a champion wins. she won here in 2010. won the boston marathon and champion. reporter: that's great. now, of course the boston marathon route is one that's very, how should i put it, challenging for some runners, especially when you get to those hills. unique? >> running along the emerald necklace park system, something a runner doesn't get to do in their training because of course the roads are open w. the cooperation -- with cooperation, we've been able to use the course and it finishing. reporter: very nice. and shrimp we need to mention this this is the

course, we need to mention that this is for charity. >> of course. reporter: jack, thank you so much. things get started here at 8:00. we're going to give you live coverage through the end of the race. >> nicole, you're a runner yourself and this is perfect running condition right ? reporter: i would think its perfect running conditions. jack and i were just talking about that, if you're standing here it's a little chilly but certainly once these runners get started, they'll warm up quickly. state much. shooting under investigation. officers in beverly shot a man to death who was ramming his vehicle into police cruisers. it began as a call to a man, when police responded, the man was ramming his and another woman

inside. >> i didn't see any injuries on her, but i'm sure if they were in the car when it was being hurt, i'm sure that they're going to be, you know, sore. reporter: the individual struck the toyota highlander on two occasionings then pack up action struck a beverly police cruiser and then hit another one. an officer ordered him to stop, he did not. one shot was fired through the driver's side man in the shoulder. reporter: the man later died at the hospital. details about a fire in franklin. a couple was killed in that fire. ten before 7:00, thought maybe it was a thunderstorm.

a condo building totally engulfed in flames. the inferno likely fed by propane which is used to heat the units. >> within two minutes of the sound, looked out back and the building was completely it was quick. reporter: a husband and wife both killed. nancy and richard brown, both 66 had just moved back up from florida to be close to their grandchildren. >> they walked every morning. just nice grandparents. >> yeah. reporter: how sad is this? >> terribly sad. reporter: the bodies of the victims were found close together. >> it's tragic for our community. it's a small, tightly knitted community so we are saddened by the tragedy and prayers go to the family members. reporter: the cause of the explosion and fire still under investigation. the chief says

there's no indication of a widespread problem but some people living here are now uneasy about the propane factor. >> i don't know if we're going to stay here. reporter: i was going to stay are you going to stay here? >> probably not, just until they reassure that everything is okay. reporter: investigators at this point believe that any possible propane issue was isolated, confined to these units but they will spend the next several days checking everything out to make sure as well as investigating the cause of this explosion and fatal fire. boston police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a six yule assault in dorchester. police have released surveillance of a person of interest they want to talk to. police are also looking for a suspect that may have pulled off four armed robberies in one day.

all of the robberies happened in the area of gibson and leroy street. in each case, the victim told police a man with braids and a red shirt threatened to shoot them. a veterinary student has already dedicated her life to animals, now she's going the extra mile to save the life of this precious dog. >> and meet a woman running with a purpose in today's half marathon. >> we have great weather for the marathon. some weather watchers reporting chilly temperatures across the area. karen has 49 degrees. some areas of patchy frost but it's going be a warmer day. how high the temps

chemo treatments that just ended. that something became training for the race and raising money. >> i think it was empowering because the like i was strong. -- sandy miles and days. >> i'm doing good. friday. reporter: you just finished. >> october 2nd was my last chemo . reporter: two weeks after surgery, with her doctor's blessing, she was back to training and feeling less alone. >> it was this sort of connection and being part of a team, part of a community. i feel like there's a deeper connection. reporter: another connection is deeper now. after sandy's first chemo treatment, she and her boyfriend walked to boylston street

>> i told him this was my new marathon. i said some day, we'll run the marathon and he actually got down on his knee and proposed to me. reporter: they'll be running together today and waiting to share the victory, his son and her daughter. was it important for you to set an example for your daughter? >> absolutely. at any given moment, life is going to throw us curve balls and it's how we react to the situation. reporter: running didn't change sandy's diagnosis, the treatment or the upcoming plan,. pride that i was really kicking this down. reporter: sandy's hoping to keep kicking it through the winter season for her ultimate

a huge fire and explosion likely fueled by propane. >> within two minutes of the sound, looked out back and the building was completely engulfed. reporter: one brand new unit was destroyed. a husband and wife living there both killed. nancy and richard brown, both 66 had just moved back up from florida to be close to their grandchildren. >> they walked every morning, just nice grandparents. >> yeah, terribly sad. reporter: the two other adjoining units were still vacant. the bodies of the two victims were discovered close together. >> its tragic for your community. its a small, tightly knitted community. it goes throughout the community so we are saddened by the tragedy and our hearts and prayers go to the family members. reporter: the cause of the explosion and fire still under investigation. the chief says there's no indication of a widespread problem, but some people living here are now uneasy about the propane factor. >> we don't know if we're going

to sleep here. reporter: yeah, i was going to say will you stay here? >> i don't know. probably not just until we're sure that everything is okay. reporter: and despite those concerns, investigators at this point believe any possible propane issue was isolated, confined to these units but they will spend the next several days checking everything out to make sure as well as investigating the cause of this terrible fire. boston police are looking for a man want ink can with a sexual assault in dorchester. police have released surveillance video of a person of interest who they want to talk to. the assault happened on september 27th on dorchester avenue and harbor view street. police are also looking for a suspect that may have pulled off four armed robberies in one day. all of the robberies happened in the area of gibson and leroy street and in each case, witnesses told police a man with braids and a red shirt threatened to stab them.

you. checking our top stories now., a couple was killed when their franklin home exploded into flames yesterday morning. neighbors say they had just moved in from florida and were hoping to be closer to their grandchildren the cause of the blast is still under investigation but a gas leak is suspected. police in beverly shot and killed a man after he rammed his car into their cruisers. it began with a call for a disturbance at a home. when police got there, they found the man intentionally plowing his car into another with his wife and a friend inside. then he hit the cruisers. police say when he wouldn't stop, they opened fire. the man later died at the hospital. even else at the scene is okay. the elite runners are about half way

marathon but parts of the area will be closed nicole jacobs is nicole, how is it going there. reporter: well, kerry, we are well on our way along the route here the runners have just completed mile six, and i must say as a very novice runner, these runners are moving at an incredibly quick speedy clip here. mile six was at a 4.24 pace and at the head of the pack, we see salil and sambu. this is the 15th running of the boston athletic association half marathon. it is put on by [inaudible] and the fund. we do know that 8500 runners

. welcome back. steve, going back to your years in the state senate and before, you've been a big activist for many years on issues surrounding addiction. you've praised governor baker's efforts to find answers to the terrible opioid epidemic we have here, and i know you're a part of that process. you also told me when we were lining up this interview, you think we may need in addition to whatever we're doing to take direct action against the manufacturers and distributers of these drugs, what do you mean?

1990s, big pharma, talked about, they basically identified them as the cause of this national open dickic in america -- epidemic in america and claimed it was a brilliant marketing scheme to create a block buster drug which is frankly devastated moms and dads on every street in massachusetts. >> you're talking about oxycontin. >> yes and that's not all of them. there are people that need pain medication. i want to be very clear. i know people need medication and they should have it, but that's when it should be distributed. not to a person who gets a tooth pulled or a knee worked on. they have done this. they have saturated and it's the docs that have to bear responsibility. they don't get proper training -- well, now it's changing but they didn't

get training in these medications because we banned opioids in 1914. reporter: so, let's get specific, what do you think we need to do, do we need legal action, do with you need new laws restricting further? it's all of the above. we have to be much more vigilant. are get injured, we make sure we're talking to them and know what they're prescribed. reporter: you'll recall governor patrick tried to step in and ban, i believe it was. >> it was hydro. >> right and the courts said you can't do that. >> right. john the fda approved these drugs and certainly we believe the fda should look at them.

this epidemic is so entrenched in big pharma, first they get you hooked, then they give you drugs to get you off and then they say oh, they should be on it their whole life. if we can treat diabetes with a pill, we can treat opioid with a pill. its not the same. >> correct me if i'm wrong, i believe the national group has delayed making an endorsement in the national presidential race, but which candidate has made the biggest impression on you so far in either party? >> personally, i'd have to say bernie sanders because, you know, he's talking about middle class america, he's talking about city america. he's talking about the people taking advantage of the laws and getting screwed by
