in the u.s. good morning to you. great to have you here with us on this monday. i'm kathryn hauser. thank you for joining us on this columbus day. we've had such a stretch of weather. it's been fantastic. the warming trend continues all the way through today. temperatures will be even warmer than yesterday. we had a high of 68 degrees in boston. today's high 76. awesome weather. starting off mild already. 50s, 40s or 30s in some spots. orange and norwood down to 38 degrees. areas of patchy frost possible in the low-lying areas. typical spots that normally get a little bit cooler but we're in the 50s on the cape and islands. very, very comfortable and we're running warmer in almost all locations compared to this time yesterday. tracking some fog this morning as well, nothing too, too serious until you get to falmouth and visibility down to half a mile or less, three- quarters of a mile or less for new bedford there. we'll keep you posted on those

cowboys game leaves a man in critical condition. police in arlington, texas, say there was a fight in the parking lot yesterday evening. a man in his 40s was shot in the head and then rushed to the hospital. a suspect was arrested and is facing several charges. police are investigating what led up to the shooting. a spokesman says the victim and shooter may have been tailgating at the time. boston police are trying to find a man in connection with a sexual assault in dorchester. >> police released surveillance video of a person of interest they want to talk to. the assault happened on september 27 odor chester avenue and harbor view. the mayor weighed in on the violence. >> any time that you get a situation like that, there's always a very active investigation. i know there was good footage there that was helpful in the ap hence potentially. >> police are also looking into whether the same person was involved in a series of armed robberies the same day. all four of the robberies happened in the area of diston and lee roy streets. in each case the police told

police the man in a red shirt threatened to stab them. it's a travel nightmare for southwest passengers. >> hundreds of flights delayed all because of a computer glitch. susie steimle is live for us with all the detail. going to cause quite a headache. >> reporter: it did. yesterday was a disaster for travelers across the country on southwest airlines. 450 flights were delayed because of this computer glitch. some passengers were even given handwritten tickets. this morning, though, some good news from logan. no long lines. the kiosks appear to be working flights as regularly scheduled so it looks at least at this location that computer glitch has been fixed. southwest said yesterday it's not sure what caused the glitch but people were waiting in long lines that wrapped all around the airport. the suggestion still today is that customers show up two hours early. the only people that didn't have problems yesterday were people that printed their tickets at home and didn't have to check bags.

what's called a no labels event. nicole jacobs is live in manchester with a preview of this. nicole? >> reporter: this is certainly something you don't see very often, especially during the campaign season but today candidates from both the democratic side and the republican side will gather here in manchester to speak with potential voters and tell them how they believe the country can come together when it comes to various political parties. it's called a no labels forum. we do expect to hear from candidates like donald trump, bernie sanders, chris christie, and of course many others. this happening as we are also getting a closer look at new cbs poll numbers that show trump still leading for republicans with 27% followed by ben carson with 21% and hillary clinton leading the democratic side with 46% followed by sanders at 27%. in a "face the nation"

interview, trump addressed the polls. >> here's another big statement. 60% of registered voters say you are not honest and trustworthy. that number has gone up since the last poll. >> it's better than hillary. >> if they think you're a leader, does it matter that they trust you? >> i think the leadership is important. i think they know i'm a very smart guy. >> reporter: actually that's not exactly accurate according to the new cbs poll. donald trump actually trail clinton when it comes to trust and honesty. clinton has 35% with trump at 33%. i should also add that today's event comes one day before the first democratic debate. we're live in manchester, new hampshire, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. speaking of trump, aerosmith is asking him to stop using their song dream on. steven tyler sent a cease and

desist letter to trump. his reps were quick to point out that this doesn't mean he's opposed to trump's bid. steven tyler is a registered republican. president obama says whoever becomes the next speaker of the house he hopes that that person will be willing to compromise. the president spoke on "60 minutes" telling steve kroft that he and john boehner had a decent working relationship. institution. he recognized that nobody gets a hundred percent in our deck mock crazy. i won't say that he and i were ideal partners but he and i could talk and we could get some things double -- things done. >> right now many republicans are rallying around paul ryan to be the next speaker but so far ryan says he doesn't want the job. it is 5:08. to a developing story out of connecticut. a s.w.a.t. team shoots and kills a man in a hotel room. state police arrived at the

lodge in old saybrook early yesterday morning where the man was shooting a gun. police ordered the man to drop his weapon. when he refused they shot him. police say it's a split-second decision they had to make. >> troopers don't go into a situation expecting or wanting to have to do something like >> guests were evacuated and put up in other hotels in the area. police say the man was a suspect in several armed robberies in the area. two boats destroyed by fire on the cape this morning. police want to know how it happened. those flames started on riverside road on the little river in mashpee. one boat caught fire. flames spread to another boat and the dock danging yet a third boat. no one is hurt this morning. new this morning, more notices are going out to homeowners at their -- that their insurance companies are dropping their coverage. the globe reports some homeowners who filed big claims after last year's winter storms are scrambling to find other insurance.

major companies are dropping customers to cut risk and save money. the commonwealth doesn't have laws prohibiting companies from doing so. the city of boston is slacking when it comes to inspecting rental apartments. the city wanted to inspect 60,000 by years end to make sure the amounts were safe, sanitary and up to code but the globe reports only 10,000 have been inspected so far. the city is now lowering their expectations and want to inspect 44,000 by the end of this year. parents, students and teachers are expected to crowd into the state house for a public hearing on nearly three dozen education-related bills. the majority of the bills are related to charter schools including proposals to create a moratorium on new charter schools. the hearing is just days after governor charlie baker unveiled a plan that he said would let the state add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year. don't go anywhere. 5:10 right now.

looking south, though, no major issues to report on route 3, route 24, or i-95 looking good out there. on this holiday weekend, the price of gas continues to go in the right direction for drivers, but that soon might change. over the past two weeks the average price of a gallon has dropped half a cent. that's the smallest drop in the last 17 weeks but a moderate hike in the cost of crude oil has wholesale prices going up. average price for a gallon right now $2.34. ride sharing service uber is more popular than ever. the company told the globe that uber drivers provided about two million rides to massachusetts passengers in september. that's a new record. the milestone comes at a time when beacon hill is considering how to regulate ride sharing services that have cut into the taxi business. ride sharing services tend to be cheaper as they set their own fares. taxi fares are set by the communities they service. sometimes fighting --

have handled the original decision better and the disclosures more quickly. >> the president downplayed the fear of a national security "60 minutes." he also believes clinton wasn't trying to hide anything but thinks the american people should listen to her and decide for themselves. governor charlie baker is proposing a new step to help the state's opioid crisis. he wants to give hospitals the power to treat substance abusers whrrks they want it or not -- whether they want it or not. it would apply to addicts who pose a danger to themselves or others. the governor believes medical professionals need more tools to fight the opioid crisis. police on the cape are trying to find the vandal who painted swastikas on a bike path between brewster and harwich. a member of the new england antidefamation league who happened to be riding on the trail took a picture of the hateful symbols. they've already been painted over.

comes to an end for the colonial theater in boston, at least for now. the theater hosted what could be its final performance last night while offbroadway enthusiasts vowed to fight the closure. >> emerson college students file into the colonial theater bought by their school nine years ago for a show at what theater buffs say is an iconic building. >> it's like a gem, you know, to see a performance in a theater like this. >> it really needs to stay as an icon for the city and for the people. >> reporter: inside a 6:30 performance of "the book of mormon" delighted the crowd but it's the grandeur of the building itself that captures attention. >> the ornateness is just the architecture is brilliant. it's something that it would be a shame if something happened to it. >> reporter: for members of a local theater union, there'sle the the threat of losing jobs if emerson doesn't keep the

staff to more than 4,000 employees in just the two years since going public. twitter not commenting. americans are paying nearly a dollar less a gallon for gas compared to last year this time. there is bad news. the lower prices probably mean no cost of living increase next year for social security recipients. it's tied to inflation which is being kept down by low gas prices so this would only be the third time in 40 years there has been no increase. and facebook is often considered one of the best companies to work for when it comes to pay and job perks but getting a job there may not be easy. glass door has put together a list of questions asked to candidates. they include how many birthday posts occur on facebook on a given day. how would you redesign an atm and if you were an animal, what kind would you be? kathryn and bree. that's a stumper.

is recovering after a stabbing. a suspect walked into the shell station demanding cash. at some point the clerk was stabbed there. the clerk suffered minor injuries. the suspect ran off. good morning. i'm sue say steimle at logan airport following up on what was a major glitch for southwest airlines yesterday and caused a huge hassle for travelers. 450 flights across the country were delayed yesterday and southwest still doesn't know exactly what went wrong but when people showed up at the airport, they couldn't print their boarding passes. the mobile app wasn't working and some cases they were even handwriting tickets for passengers. today a completely different story. it appears that the kiosks are working. there are no long lines and headaches for passengers here at logan but if you're flying southwest, the airline is suggesting that you print your tickets at home. we're live at logan airport,

the suspect is in custody. this is the fourth police officer to be shot in four years in memphis. an explosion killed a couple yesterday morning in franklin. neighbors say they had just moved from florida into a new condo to be closer to their grandchildren. the condo was heat bid poe pain and a gas leak -- heated by propane and a gas leak is suspected. a man is facing extradition charges tomorrow. "the boston globe" reports david drum was a powerful chief executive at ireland's anglo irish bank. he left during the financial crisis and fled to boston when ireland started to investigate him. james bond might be british but a collection of the cars used in the secret agent's movies paraded through paris yesterday. from the alpine to this year's aston martin, it was all a promotion for the newest bond movie that opens in europe later this month.
