i've got to tell you, kathryn, i had lunch yesterday and i had a ton of sun. >> it was gorgeous. >> it did not feel like fall. >> you do look a little more tan. that's the thing, you guys. it's just a beautiful day overall. 40s and 50s. it will be mild again. we're in the mid-50s right now in boston, but look at what's to our south, you guys. areas of rain. notice the motion of all of it, too, from the south to north, so we're going to see the pockets of rain fill in, unfortunately for the morning commute this morning. so here's a little bit of fog out there, too. it's localized, so it is patchy, dense fog. when you come back down to the cape, three-parters of a mile from chatter to nantucket. in eastern massachusetts, these areas of rain will fill in. temperatures in the upper 50s. i do anticipate some breaks of sunshine coming out. lunchtime, 66 degrees. a little breezy, the wind from

the south 10 to 20 miles per hour. can't rule out an isolated shower later on. the wettest period is this morning. we should top out in the lower 70s again today. so there are big changes temperature-wise on the horizon. we'll talk more about it coming up in a few. developing this morning, tense moments in a local neighborhood. s.w.a.t. team members using a flash grenade to get inside of a condo in bellingham. a man who reportedly stabbed another man was inside that unit refusing to come out. several condos were evacuated. police did arrest the man but didn't say how bad the victim's injuries are. two firefighters are dead, two others hurt in this massive building fire in kansas city. the fire chief says that the two firefighters carried two people out of the building before they were killed. part of the roof collapsed on firefighters.

crews continued to battle the flames overnight. investigators don't know how it started. a brookline firefighter under arrest, accused of attacking a man inside of a restaurant in the town. investigators say he was angry because the other man was taking too long to order. >> katie brace has a closer look at how this incident quickly escalated. >> reporter: investigators say a customer holding up the line at anna's taqueria infuriated a brookline firefighter. once outside, the witness described the attack like this, really hitting a guy on the ground. he punched him multiple times and kicked him on the side. somebody else. >> reporter: people outside were stunned hearing about the attack late sunday night. >> it seems out of the ordinary happen. >> reporter: police say joseph ward called the apparently homeless customer expletives. he's also accused of throwing a bottle and food at the man. >> it's awful given the climate

comboing on with law enforcement. >> the restaurant surveillance caught the attack. the witness says the beating did not stop until she yelled stop. we went to ward's home for his side, but he did not come to the door. the victim was taken to the hospital for observation. police arrested firefighter ward running up a side street. >> some cases, you never know. a position doesn't define someone's character. >> reporter: ward is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. the city has placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. in brookline, katie brace, wbz this morning. this morning, grief counselors will be on hand at a dedham school. a 16-year-old athlete died at field hockey practice, and this picture of kasey dunn was taken just 30 minutes before her death. she lined up for practice then collapsed on friday. she never got back up. doctors say she had a massive brain bleed, and there was not much they could do. this morning, her mother is devastated.

>> i keep thinking she's going to come bounding through the back door saying this is a terrible joke, but i know that's not going to happen. it was probably something she was born with and we never knew about it. there's no way to detectp. fortunately, it was quick, and she didn't suffer too much. >> a small memorial of rubber duckies, her favorite, is growing on the field at the school. her funeral is scheduled for thursday. >> tragic story there. it is the democrats' turn to be in the spotlight after debates. they will debate policy and qualifications. bree is here with a closer look up at the matchup. >> reporter: this will be radically different than the republican debates not only because most of the candidates are the polar opposite on the political spectrum but also because there's only half as many candidates as the republican field. so democrats will have more time to talk and potentially break out of the pack. on stage tonight are hillary

governor of rhode island, lincoln chafey, former governor of maryland martin o'malley and former senator from virginia jim webb. hillary clinton is already in vegas. she made an unscheduled stop yesterday, june a crowd of mostly latino workers. in the background, trump international hotel. bernie sanders, meantime, spoke via satellite. sanders says he is not doing mock debates in preparation, but tonight could be the biggest test of his campaign. still the big story line, though, can any of the other three break out of the pack? o'malley might be the most liberal of the three and closest match to bernie sanders' record. lincoln chafee had been a liberal republican and independent for most of his career, and then jim webb is the former secretary of the navy who positions himself as the anti-career politician. that's jim webb there.

will joe biden, vice president show up for the debate? if he does, that will surely dominate the headlinesp. jeb bush is in new hampshire today giving a speech on repealing and replacing obama care in manchester. he released details of the plan last night that increases tax credits to let consumers buy coverage. no word on how many people could be left without coverage. he is expected to release more details before heading to town halls. the sad end for the search for a new hampshire woman missing for weeks. she was murdered. police found the body of sue hutchison behind a fake wall in her home. police searched the home after the family reported a strange odor. investigators believe that her roommate killed her. he committed suicide in a tewksbury motel last week. jury selection continues today in the case against

phillip chism, accused of raping and killing his danvers high schoolteacher colleen ritzer. he was 14 at the time but is being tried as an adult. aaron hernandez heading back to court today. prosecutors want access to new evidence. the judge will hear arguments today. hernandez is accused of shooting and killing two men in the south end in 2012 following an encounter in the financial district earlier that night. he's pleading not guilty. he is already serve august life lloyd. the irish banking boss who many blamed for helping take down ireland's economy will be in a boston courtroom today. ireland wants to extradite david drum, you see here, who's been living in wellesley for the last several years. drum ran anglo airish bank, which collapsed -- anglo irish bank, which collapsed triggering a meltdown. irish authorities have been trying to question him ever since.

a lowell police officer recently placed on leave for sleeping on the job has been in trouble for snoozing before. last week, someone took pictures of officer jeffrey moore asleep inside his cruiser with the pillow and the seat all the way back. he was found asleep on duty twice in the past. firefighters from four communities helped to put out this fire in winthrop. it started on the third floor of a multifamily home on dolphin ave. last night. the red cross is helping eight adults and one child. still ahead, new hope for a couple whose daughter was diagnosed with a tumor that could end her life. >> we'll tell you how doctors here in boston are answering their prayers. >> plus, one of massachusetts' biggest companies at the center of the biggest tech merger in history. a closer look at the deal and its possible impact. >> and controversy around

we get areas of rain to fill in, and then the sun breaks out. we'll be breezy and mild in the lower 70s again. then we get changes on the way. mean tile, temperatures 56 in boston. dew points in the mid-50s. the wind is very light out of the south 3 miles per hour at logan airport. here's the current radar. notice areas of rain approaching the south coast or some downpours in here, even embedded thunderstorms south of block island. so all of this slowly moving north here will expand across eastern massachusetts by the time we get to mid-morning for a lot of spots. so it will be a wet start to the day. if you are leaving right now, early this morning, it's dry across the board but grab the wet weather gear. back to the west there's more showers, right? this is an actual cold front that will sweep through later on today. so we get an area of low pressure coming up from the south. notice between now and 7:00 a.m., the rain fills in across southeastern massachusetts.

north and west of that, there should be a sharp cutoff from the steadiest rain, but i do still think there will be pockets. that fills in from worcester to providence through the city of boston through mid-morning. notice by lunchtime, that rain ships out of here. breaks of sunshine will be coming out. it turns into a nice afternoon. the evening should be mostly dry as well. a couple of showers should come in, but not until the late evening. so that's the cold front that will cool us down as we head into the day tomorrow. we'll start with sunshine on our wednesday morning, and then building clouds come in and isolated sprinkle tomorrow. overall, most of us would see dry weather. thursday, sunshine out in full force looks beautiful. there are going to be showers to our north and chilly air that's on the move in central canada. eventually, those installments of cool air come in as we head into the end of the week and

so if you like the mild feel, low to mid-70s. it won't be that cool. 50s for most of us. some mid to upper 40s in the cooler suburbs. highs tomorrow will top out in the upper 60s. you'll notice in the seven-day, each day we cool things down, so by thursday we're only around 60. friday, another round of scattered showers comes in. we turn cooler this weekend. saturday a stray shower. highs only in the 50s. it looks bright, though, right around 50 for the start of next week. guys, back to you. >> i don't know how i feel about that one, but okay. hundreds of workers are expected to march on beacon hill before testifying at a hearing on raising the minimum wage here many massachusetts. lawmakers are considering a series of bills that would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for fast food, home care and raises for employees.

a public hearing on nearly three dozen education realtied bills. the majority reported to charter schools including a moratorium on new charter schools. the hearing comes just days after charlie baker unveiled a bill that he says would allow the state to add up to a dozen new charter schools each week. the parents of a baby girl are celebrating a new outlook for her. >> they were told repeatedly that the baby girl had a brain tumor she wouldn't be able to survive but doctors in boston are giving them new home. hi, bree. >> reporter: hi, guys. this is amazing. 2-year-old abigail's journey in this world has not been easy. she was diagnosed in the womb with a brain tomber that doctors said would kill her. they sent the infant home for hospice care. as they waited for abigail to eventually die, the parents noticed the baby wasn't getting any worse so they got a second

opinion at boston children's hospital. doctors decided there was not enough evidence that conclude the brain tumor was inoperable. so they performed the surgery and found the mass was malignant. >> she is a miracle. she's missing a large bit of the left side of her brain, and she should have deficits. function. she should not be a normal baby, but she is. >> we always prayed for abigail to be healed, and however that works out, god's still going to get the glory for it. >> what a sweet baby girl. the jones, who live in florida, had made funeral arrangements for abigail. now they are planning for a life with sweet abigail, which will still cloud down's syndrome. the jones are still grateful to have her. chris, kathryn, back to you. >> wishing them all the best as they continue on this journey with the new one. straight ahead,

4:52 right now. morning. a brookline firefighter is under arrest accused of beating a man outside of a restaurant. joseph ford was upset that the order. witnesses say he punched the man multiple times and kicked him on the side. police arrested ward after seeing him running up a side street. he's charged with assault and weapon. grief counselors are on hand after a 16-year-old dies after field hockey practice. doctors say kasey had a massive brain hemorrhage. her funeral is scheduled for thursday. marquette university is paying tribute to graduate james foley, the new hampshire journalist kidnapped and killed by isis. mass over the weekend. the portrait was commissioned as the lasting tribute to foley and his commitment to uncovering the truth. his parents traveled to be there. >> i don't think we knew what a he had become. he was just my beloved son. >> it makes us cry. >> on saturday, marquette will hold a 5k race in foley's honor. next sunday would have been his 42nd birthday. the oregon community college where a gunman killed five people is back open. oregon governor kate graham welcomes students back. students left flowers and signed their names to a tribute. and the minnesota man could killed cecil the lion will not be facing charges. walter palmer had all of the legal paper work for his big game hunt.

welcome back. a very special honor on the ice. the bruins signed a b.u. hockey player nearly 20 years after an accident that changed his life forever. travis dropped the puck at the bruins game yesterday. on october 20, 1995, 11 seconds into his sift stint, he was left paralyzed with the bruins. he was signed to a one-day contract and a huge donation was made. >> i remember when that happened. it was one of the scariest things ever. it kicked off the whole campaign "don't duck" campaign. a lot of people said it felt like yesterday that it happened. that was a nice thing to do. traffic and weather
