breaks of sun are out by lunchtime. the rain will be done mid-60s, 68 breezy and island as we head into the ride -- breezy and mild as we head into the ride home. hi, robi. >> reporter: hi, danielle. most of the problems are south of boston, including an accident. the crash is down in randolph 24 northbound before route 28. the center lane is blocked, but that's clearing now. route 3 northbound is bumper to bumper from weymouth to the braintree split and the expressway, you are jammed east milton square to columbia road. >> take a look at this. this is video from the scene moments ago. we're told a large piece of scrap metal flew off a truck. the driver, amazingly is say. the truck stopped so police say it's not clear if the driver

knew the debris came off of that truck. also developing, tense moments in a local neighborhood. right there you see it, suite team members using a flash grenade in bellingham last night. a man who reportedly stabbed another man was inside and refused to come out. several condos nearby were evacuated. no word on the extent of the injuries. the fire chief says two firefighters carried out two firefighters from a burning building before they were killed. crews continued to battle the flames overnight. in brookline a firefighter accused of attacking a man in brookline. investigators say he was angry with the man for taking too

long to order. >> reporter: right here on the sidewalk in front of witnesses and surveillance video, none of which appeared to stop this firefighter from allegedly attacking a customer. outside of this brookline anna's taqueria, surveillance video captured outside. >> no excuse for hurting somebody else. >> reporter: a slow moving line inside spilled over to violence. joseph ward was allegedly behind the attack. a photo of him from the 2014 boston marathon shows a much different side than what court documents outlined alleging he called the victim a homeless expletive then punched him multiple times physical a witness yelled stop. >> in some cases, you never know. a position doesn't define someone's character. >> reporter: ward was arrested for the assault many say he could have and should have avoided.

told, was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. in the meantime, town officials here in brookline say that firefighter is on administrative leave. we're live in brookline, nicole jacobs, wbz news this morning. it's 6:05 right now. it's the democrats' turn in the spotlight after two republican presidential debates. today, the nomination will debate qualifications. bree? >> reporter: the debate will be radically different from the republican debates we've seen, not only because most of the candidates are on the polar opposite of the political spectrum but also because there's only half as many candidates as the republican field. the democrats have more time to talk and potentially break out of the pack. on stage tonight are hillary clinton, bernie sanders. former governor of rhode island lincoln chafee. former governor of maryland, martin o'malley and former senator from virginia, jim webb. hillary clinton is mr. speaker

she made an -- vegas. she made an unscheduled stop. bernie sanders spoke at the no labels group. tonight might be the biggest test of his campaign. still, the big story line is can any of the other three break out of the pack. martin o'malley may be the closest match to bernie sanders' record. lincoln chafey, meanwhile -- chafee is a recent convert having been a liberal republican and independent for most of his career both as a senator and governor. then there's jim webb, the former secretary of the navy who positions himself as the anti-career politician. the wild card in all of this? will vice president biden show up for the cnn debate. they are supposed to already

if he does, that will surely dominate the headlines tomorrow. chris, back to you. jeb bush is in new hampshire this week. today he's giving a speech on repealing and replacing obama care in manchester. he released details on his plan last night. it increases tax credit to let consumers buy coverage. without insurance. the former florida governor is expected to release more before heading to town halls in keene. hundreds are expected to have a public hearing and many have to do with charter schools. susie steimle is live outside the statehouse with all of the details. good morning, susie. >> good morning, kathryn. parents, teachers, and students are expected to descend on beacon hill to debate this consistently contentious topic, charter schools. governor baker is expected to

talk about the topic as well, supporting charter schools because he's consistently been a supporter in the past. this morning, he is expected to talk about a proposal that would add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year in the state of massachusetts. meanwhile, another bill is being proposed that would suggest a moratorium on schools. there are currently 80 massachusetts. many parents each year are fighting to get their kids into these privately operated and publicly funded institutions. more than 37,000 students were on a waiting list this school year to get their kids into charter schools. critics of charter schools will say that these bills to support the creation of new charter schools would create a two- tiered education system. it will be a contentious debate, has been all along and is expected to begin this

committee. susie steimle, wbz this morningp. grief counselors will be on hand at a dedham school after a 16-year-old athlete died during field hockey practice. this is the picture of kasey dunn taken 30 minutes before her death. she lined up for practice and collapsed but never got back up. her mother tells us this morning how devastated her family is. >> i keep thinking she will come bounding through the back door saying this is a terrible joke, but i know that's not going to happen. it was probably something she was born with, and we never knew about it. there's no way to detect it. fortunately it was quick. she didn't suffer too much. >> a small memorial of rubber duckies is growing on the field. her funeral is scheduled for thursday. police now say a new hampshire woman missing for

weeks was murdered. police founded body of sue hutchison in a crawl space in a fake wall in her home. this is after the family reported a strange odor. investigators believe her roommate killed her. he took his own life in a tewksbury motel last week. jury selection continues in the case against philip chism. is he accused of killing his danvers high school math teacher in 2014. wees 14 at the time but being tried as an adult. aaron hernandez is headed back to tort today. his lawyers want a double murder charge tossed out. a judge will hear the arguments today. hernandez is accused of shooting and killing two men following an encounter in a nightclub in the financial district. he is already sevenning ai life

thunder, too. action. the cold front is back in western new york. a few of these may come into evening. morning, others of rain. midday, look what happens, the rain is gone. sun's breaking out. above average day. too. commute. a couple of stray showers come in from west to east and that's the cold front that clears the sunshine to start. tomorrow afternoon. an isolated sprinkle, but most of us won't see it. a little piece of energy comes in. thursday looks beautiful, just cooler. high temperatures top out around 60 on thursday. a few more cold fronts come out of canada and bring in chillier air. if you enjoy the mild temperature, 70 to 74 degrees today. clearing tonight, dropping into

the accident was in randolph before 128. moving now. slow. rockland to the split, the expressway jammed from east milton square to columbia road. slow pockets. route 1 south hangs up into peabody and saugus stretches. chris, kathryn? >> thank you very much, robi. the minnesota dentist who killed cecil the lion will not be facing charges for that killing. authorities in zimbabwe say walter palmer had all of the legal paperwork for his big game hunt. remember in july palmer sparked international outrage when he killed cecil with a bow and arrow. two others, though have been charged in the death of the lion accused of luring him outside. the u.s. military says it's now making air drops of

ammunition in syria to arab groups fighting isis. the pentagon says leaders have been vetted and are fighting to remove isis from northern syria. it was just last week that the obama administration announced it was abandoning efforts to build a new syrian rebel force in favor of supporting existing syrian rebel groups. finally, some relief for residents affected by this massive flooding in south carolina. a section of i-95 will reopen this morning. before now, drivers had to take a two-hour detour around the affected area. the heavy rain and flood waters washed out the road there. the southbound lanes opened up yesterday. all lanes will be back open today. >> i feel like they haven't been able to catch a break, though, back to back. eight presidential candidates turned out in new hampshire. >> jon keller takes a closer look at if it was effective. >> plus, new hope for a couple whose baby girl was diagnosed with a deadly tumor. how doctors here in boston

welcome back at 6:24 on your tuesday morning. compromise is becoming a dirty word in politics. >> one group is trying to change that. the no labels group was in new hampshire. jon keller looks at wrong it was effective. >> reporter: good morning. i couldn't make it in person to catch the presidential candidate forum in new hampshire yesterday, tut together by no labels a bipartisan group that wants to replace the acid flowing through our political discourse with something more productive. judging from accounts of the event it was an illuminating study in contrast. on one side, you have the philosophy of the organizers that what's wrong with our politics is "the hyper partisan viewpoint that leads far too many of our leaders and

citizens to dismiss, ignore, or question the motives of the people in the other party." on the other side, you had one of the guest speakers, donald trump who either didn't know or didn't care what no labels stands for. according to politico, trump dissidence instead of challenging the content of the president's recent interview on "60 minutes," trump said mr. obama "bombed." he tried to talk over a young woman in the crowd who wanted to question him about women's rights and said he only insults other candidates after they've been "nasty to him." it escapes me how any of that improves our political culture.

downpours are coming into new bedford. these slide up to acushnet and still have pockets of moderate to heavy rain impacting the commute from cranston to providence, rhode island. this will be lifting north. this is the southeast part of the state. notice between now and mid- morning there will be pockets of light rain. worcester county sliding east. by 1:00 p.m., a lot of crowds, breaks of sun. low 70s. the evening commute should be clouds fill back in. it's not until late evening that we get another passing shower that comes in towards the overnight. up. first, traffic and weather together. any big trouble spots, robi? >> a pair of accidents north of the city among the many problems. both crashes are on route 3 southbound. one in lowell just after 495. the other in billerica before treble cove road. traffic up there backed up

between 129 and 495. also 93 southbound is jammed from wilmington to the leverett ramp. checking the south now, the worst road is in the middle of northbound crawling from brockton up to 128. 95 north, you are stop and go neponset street. route 3 northbound hangs up between rockland and the split. new this morning, a close saugus. take a look at this video from the scene. we're told a large piece of scrap metal flew off a truck and smashed into this windshield of an suv. the driver is okay, amazingly. the truck did not stop. police say it's not clear if the driver knew the debris came off. still, troopers are looking for that driver. also new this morning, authorities in nashua, new hampshire, are investigating an alleged hit list. a book called "death notes" was discovered at nashua high

school north with the names of students inside. the principal says the student responsible was removed from class and disciplinary action has been taken. she says at no time were students and faculty in any danger. a brookline firefighter is in trouble after attacking a man. investigators say wees angry because the other man was taking too long to order. >> nicole jacobs has the latest on this. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, kathryn. good morning, chris. the firefighter is on administrative leave this morning after an alleged attack right outside of this anna's taqueria. it happened sunday evening when an offduty firefighter reportedly took issue with the man causing the line to move too slowly. the firefighter had been identified as joseph ward. court documents allege he called a customer a homeless expletive. when that tension spilled over outside, witnesses told police

the man and punched him repeatedly. >> some cases you never know. a position doesn't define someone's character. >> reporter: the victim in this case was taken to the hospital and treated. again, ward was arrested and charged, and certainly on administrative leave this morning. we're live in brookline. nicole jacobs, wbz this morningp. it is 6:34 right now. a quincy lawyer and his girlfriend are due in court today in connection with a murder in marshfield. michael and lauren are due in plymouth district court. police say he killed 45-year- old robert mckenna and his girlfriend helped cover up the crime. mckenna was found dead in his home last month, involved in big game hunting and diamond running in africa. investigators believe robbery may have been a motive. today, hundreds are expected at a minimum wage rally at the statehouse.

for a $15 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers, home care, and also retail employees. susie steimle is live for us at the statehouse with a closer look at the details. good morning, susie. >> reporter: good morning, kathryn and chris. that's one of the big questions being debated at a busy statehouse today. should minimum wage be raised to $15 an hour. the group that would answer yes to that question is going to rally here at 11:30 this morning on the statehouse steps. currently, the minimum wage in massachusetts is $9 an hour. it is expected to go up to $11 an hour by 2017, but this group says that's not enough. they want to see minimum wage go up to $15 in the state of massachusetts and they are inspired by some success in other states and other cities recently. seattle, san francisco, new york and los angeles all recently won a battle to increase minimum wage in those cities. this group is hoping that will help them in their fight today.

for fast food retail employees and home care workers. the plan is to rally here on the statehouse steps at 11:30 and go inside of the statehouse to have a more formal public hearing at 1:00. then come back out at 2:30 to statehouse. susie steimle, wbz news this morning. it looks like controversy is not hurting business at boston-based draftkings and the rival site fan duel. bloomberg reports both fantasy sports sites had their biggest weekend yet bringing in $44 million in entry fees despite allegations that workers at the state used inside information to make trades. several investigations are now sites prevent fraud. 6:36 on your tuesday morning. this story will pull at your heartstrings. parents of a newborn were told repeatedly that their daughter

had a brain tumor and couldn't survive. doctors are giving the family new hope. bree's back with an incredible story. hi, bree. >> reporter: abigail jones was diagnosed with down's syndrome and a brain tumor florida doctors said would kill her. they sent the infant home for hospice care. as they waited for abigail to eventually die, her parents noticed the baby wasn't getting any worse, so they got a second opinion at boston children's hospital. doctors decided there was not enough evidence to conclude abigail's brain tumor was inoperable so they performed the surgery and it was not malignant. >> she is missing a large part of her brain, so she should have problems with function, should have deficits and should not be a normal baby, but she is. >> we always prayed for abigail

to be healed. however that works out, god's still going to get the glory for it. >> the jones' who live in florida made funeral arrangements and now don't need those. they are planning for a life with a sweet baby that still includes down's syndrome and one they are incredible to have. on the healthwatch this morning, a glass of red wine may help people with diabetes. drinking one glass of wine a day may help lower the risks of diabetes. time now for the "daily talker." we are asking how much is too much screen time for kids? >> doctors are set to revisit how much time they think kids should sit in front of the tv and of course electronic devices. robi is here to explain. hey, robi.

>> reporter: it used to be called tv guidelines and now babies are picking up ipads while still in diapers. for the first time in 15 years, the american academy of pediatrics reconsidering the digital exposure guidelines. the policies must evolve or become obsolete. a.a.p. used to recommend children under the age of 2 look at no screens and kids older than that be limited to two hours a day. that was before 2011 and before ipads became popular with apps designed to teach kids. now 30% of children in the u.s. play with some kind of mobile device before necessity are potty trained. and 70% of teens have them that they use constantly. in the meantime, the academy recommends paying attention to the content of the screens and making sure there's plenty of time for nondigittal activity. so a number of people are

also areas of rain extending out to rhode island. providence stretching back up to attleboro. it's with an area of low pressure that will pass to our east here at midday. behind it we get a break in the action. then there's another round of showers with a cold front that will sweep through the evening hours. it is a changeable weather day today. once we get through the wet with a earth this morning, notice hour by hour it takes mid to late morning how it shifts. by 1:00 p.m., some clouds and sunshine breaking out. it'll be breezy and mild. high temperatures once again coming into the 70s. the evening drive should be fine but then late-day showers may come in. 73 degrees by later on after the rain this morning. wind out of the south about 10 to 20 miles per hour. overnight tonight, clearing skies. coolest suburbs. highs tomorrow won't be as warm as today.
